  • mmm

  • Fallout anyone? No but in all seriousness, this is just simply amazing, like If i was ever offered the chance to visit a place like that i would try to have so much fun, try to explore, and learn as much as I could! Its places like these I wish they would show on documentaries

  • Nowadays, it's rare to be able to change someone in the slightest, especially in regards to their thoughts and how they view the world. You, Mr. Riggs, change a lot of people with these videos.

  • It's Fallout 3!

  • Used to come here when younger. Somehow the whole place has an indeterminate, uncomfortable but very fascinating feeling about it...I can not compare it with any other place I've ever been to.

  • Leonard Knight isn't at Salvation Mountain anymore (taken to live at a hospital as his health was failing fast, last I heard), and the young man who was going to take care of it when he got too old is dead. Some parts have already been heavily damaged. Who knows what it will look like in a few years.

  • nerdfighters.

  • Where did you find that old film of The Miracle in the Desert?

  • Annnnnnnnd subscribe. :)

  • magical and melancholy and everything else. i second centigrado's comment.

  • incredible, beautiful video

  • Hi, I just very recently found your page, and I know you probably already have more comments to your video that you are or will be able to read, and without fear of having my message lost in this sea or curious people's comments, I just wanted to say thank you. You touched me, and this has changed me a little. :)

  • Wow now this is a place I have to go in my life time. I have a sort of facination with deralict and post-apocoliptic things and this is just utterly intrueging and beautiful to me.

  • Oh my holy hell. This is beautiful and scary and.. The newest addition of places I must visit.

  • 4:27 Car on the left

  • This is beautiful and haunting and amazing! WOW

  • I've always loved things like this. Thank you.

  • very cool

  • That place looks like an awesome place to make some sort of movie...

  • @Lauen324 Michael Jackson produced his music video "In the Closet" with Naomi Campbell at the Salton Sea. I have always been intrigued by the place, there's a nice view of it driving out I-10

  • scary place, id like to go back, last time i was there was like 2000-2001.

  • This is eerie but so interesting.

  • war...war never changes.....

  • they havent made a fallout movie here...why?

  • @NerfHerderD17

    Too busy patrolling the mojave.

  • It's like some wooden, sandy Pripyat, bathed in solar instead of nuclear radiation...

  • Awesome job on the movie and extremely interesting!

  • Scary...but VERY similar to the Fallout setting

  • Has NOBODY else noticed the end of the URL says dicks=yes ?

  • @HasturLives wtf no it doesn't...

  • @HasturLives It doesn't.

  • @Scrabzord wait you guys were right, it doesn't, just when it was linked to me it said "&dicks=yes" and I realized... you can put anything at the end of a youtube link after an &.

  • 5th time watching this damn video..and it still leaves me in awe.

  • Where did you find all this?!!?!? I was there last week and we couldnt find any of this stuff. We found a few old roads but a lot of new houses. Please reply!

  • @howlongmustIsingthis you seem to have been on the east side of the lake desert shores maybe? because i used to go with my parents to an old friends house in the 90s, i remember it so well i always got a strange feeling when we went, cant describe it, its now been about 10 years since ive been there but id like to go back now as an adult.

  • Very nice short, thanks for this!

  • Wow, just incredible music in this film. I cant stop watching it honestly. It fits this desolate, dark, and post-apocalyptic setting extremely well. And your narration skills are great as well, very educational as well as entertaining short. Good work my friend and keep it up, its videos such as this that keep my motivation running to become a film maker

  • coldplay brought me here

  • Thumbs up this if Coldplay brought you here :)

  • That was a really good video. I love your voice. I agree with others when they say that you should do documentaries or voiceovers in general. I had never even known about the salton sea before this. Very educational

  • A real life "The Hills Have Eyes" .....creepy

  • Nice Video. There's an old lime factory in Eastern Oregon you'd love. Went bankrupt and they just left it there. It's in part of my movie. Just don't get caught if you go there. .

  • i used to hate deserts but now i love them for some reason

  • I love your voice. You really should narrate documentaries.

  • You know, what you just gave a idea for a new story.

  • I'm picking up my old gas mask and heading out to the Saltic Sea.

  • Perfect place for a honeymoon

  • Joe Rogan Bitches !!

  • @Shortyj13 Yeah! I just listened to this podcast today. I am catching up on a train I am glad I didn't miss.

  • Ahh! That's the same place and the old guy from Into The Wild, when Emile Hirsh and Kristen Stewart spend a day toghether near the hippy trailer park! Anybody else notice this?? Amazing, inspirational film, and a great guy!

  • JRE

  • Great stuff, felt like watching some real life Fallout city

  • awesome.

  • ALChestBreach was here! :D

  • This was so astonishin. Funny thing is, I don't know if I wanna feel sorry for the old man who had spent 30 years building something reminding me of a beacon of light, or hope even. Or, if I shuold feel happy for him, as he seems to have found a purpose in life, something most modern people can only dream of.

  • I am going to that location next week. I will bring a camera.

  • It would be nice without all the "GOD" shit thrown in

  • Looks like an amazing set for a Fallout New Vegas movie.

  • THE JOE ROGAN EXPERIENCE

  • You should visit Chernobyl and Pripyat.

  • fallout fan fic NOWWW!!!!!

  • Gotta start hoarding stimpacks...

  • @wholemilk2percent You...are now my hero.

  • @wholemilk2percent you need to go there man, feel weird when youre there, its really does feel like fallout.

  • and i only live 40 or so minutes away from this You never know whats out there in our world....

  • @wholemilk2percent if i was that close i would take a visit there

  • Watching this I want to see the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

  • fallout!

  • Great imagery. I particularly loved the "end of the road".

  • downloaded the song off iTunes

  • Chemtrails

  • No idea how many times I've watched this now, and I still love it.

  • I live a few minutes away from the Salton Sea, so close that if I step outside I can sea it. I like this video because it captures the mystery and beauty of Salton City and the surrounding areas while other documentaries make it seem like something that should be removed. well done.

  • outstanding, very nice video

  • Most thought provoking. Nicely done.

  • wow this is amazing

  • I am literally speechless. This is absolutely stunning work. Just thank you. I really don't know what else to say.

  • For the sake of the errie-ness of the film you're making it seems like it was mostly a man-made disaster when in fact the run-off was caused by extremely heavy rain in 1905, which caused overflow of the Colorado river and a levy to breach, which eroded two new rivers that poured into Salton. The film is still great though lol

  • Absolutely outstanding work... That's all I can really say... Fantastic work.

  • ransriggs i just wonder what the soundtrack is called that starts at 3:19 it's reallyreally nice :]

  • Thank you!! This is great. I've been totally entranced by this place for years and you captured the essence of my hypnosis. (I just wonder what's evolving in that lake now.) Superbly done. -Warren Fahy

  • im going hear this sunday yay!

  • Does anyone know where a full version of the "Miracle in the desert" video is?

  • you are amazingly talented, i loved your book and i look foward to the followups of Mrs Peregrines Home for Peculair Children and the movie and more of these awesomely chilling and haunting videos

  • This is great!

  • Thank you for this amazingly haunting video and also for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children <3

  • Beautiful. Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be...

  • Breathtaking !

  • @fairlygoodman you can look around yourself if you want. Google street view has been through. Some parts oftown were never built, but the built sections are thriving. Just like the sea itself, there are dead areas and built areas. The overarching imperial valley is a huge place though, full of agriculture, sure to the wonderful quirk of 5 growing seasons a year.

  • Loved this, thank you. Would also like to recommend the movie Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea.

  • yay you are such a great filmmaker! <3

  • @fairlygoodman i think the same way!

  • @MasterChief2Man I think it's creepy, to see that they just up and left one day, and didn't carefully plan a move. A real sense of urgency in it all.

  • This is so fascinating for me! I love places where so many people have been... And now, nobody even knows this place!

  • so what the hell happened?

  • @AXE2501 He explained it in the video, are you dumb?

  • your amazing! i hope to work with you someday!

  • I think the most disturbing part is not the mostly decrepit buildings, but rather the ones that look still intact. With photos and decorations. It really makes you think "someone used to live here".

  • @fairlygoodman: In quite a few places, not only did someone "used to live there", but thousands of people still do. The scene with the graffiti on the wall, "the hills have eyes", was taken in one of the surviving communities. the post office shown at the end, in "Salton City"? it is still open. area code 92274. That was my hometown. Not only is it still open, it's actually a lot bigger than it was 25 years ago.

  • @daxius1234 Shortly after watching this, I did some googling and I was amazed to find that people still live here. That's amazing to me that you grew up there. Is it really as bad as it is in this video, or would you say that only pockets of Salton City are "bad"?

  • I love this video so much. The Salton Sea is on my list of places I want to see before I die.

  • Probably one of my favourite youtube videos of all-time. Thanks man.

  • Amazing. I'm speechless.

  • That was a real trip - I felt I was there. Thanks for the great images and the perfectly matter of fact, yet poetical narration.

  • There is a very entertaining documentary about the Salton Sea narrated by John Waters. "Plagues and Pleasures of the Salton Sea" Everyone needs to see it!

  • Fallout: New Vegas, anyone? Just me? ...okay.

  • @Throrindor Now that I've thoroughly searched the comments, I see that I am far from alone.

  • @Throrindor I KNOW ITS THE SAME

  • A great and thoughtful documentary! Thank you!

  • AND WHERE THE HELL CAN THAT OLD MAN GET WATER AND FOOD FROM ??!!

  • @ki3t56 his creation is well known in southern california so im sure people bring him items and for all i know he could go up north into borrego springs

  • desktop backgrounds everywhere.

  • Watched this at school! thank you. This is what everything we'll look like, when we pollute the air more.

  • Just absolutely fascinating.

"Gridded streets, every one of them named, still waiting for neighborhoods that never arrived."

Don't know why that strikes me as so haunting. I must have watched this thing at least a dozen times since I found it. Ghost towns have always fascinated me. This is remarkable. Thanks for creating this!

  • That old dude was in the movie "Into The Wild" - I'd recognize that landscape anywhere. lol

  • Thats exactly like fallout.

  • Better watch out for super-mutants! or those dirty dirty Ghouls...

  • anyone catch the creepy looking baby at 4:52 in the lower right

  • @Fire23eater yeah i was like wtf is that :P

  • Beautiful Video!

  • Yeah i was there yesterday... the whole time i was like this place looks like fallout 3. but then u drive into the neighborhoods and its nothin but white trash, meth addicts, and niggs.. its just a big ass collection of scumbags and deserted buildings.

  • Wait so fallout is real :P

  • This is just - beautiful. Fifth time I've watched it, and still strikes me

  • CREEPY AS HELL

  • War. War Never Changes..

  • Well written, great music to go with it. Hauntingly beautiful.

  • MIND BLOWN

  • Beautifully shot

  • i love this video! Thanks for putting it up!

  • Excellent!

  • An astounding documentary.

  • amazing work.

  • Has anyone got a good pic of the scene at 0:47 ? Cause it looks so damn epic.

  • Salton sea is not man-made...

  • All those houses are a mess with shit thrown all around because they are used as temporary homes for drug addicts and drifters.

  • excellent film congratulations.

  • Holy shit... iv'e passed by the Salton sea hundreds of times in my truck but.... I never knew about this.... Oh my god.

Also, these Fallout refrences in the comments are epic.

  • You think of it as a heaven or hell. I think of it as limbo.

  • Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

  • @GrimReaper19 We won't go quietly, the Legion can count on that.

  • Shit I live like 30 miles away from that

  • i wanna play fallout now

  • That area could still be useful, whenever some director wants to make a movie with a post-apocylptic setting, they could use this place.

  • "War... War Never Changes"

  • Looks like Fallout games

  • My favorite video on youtube.

  • @TheBaileythatstays Without a doubt!

  • The narration reminds me of the movie Pi, voice-wise.

  • Wow this is great! Thank you for sharing.

  • Well done! The narration, visuals, and tempo are first rate.

  • I have never heard of that figure of speech, I learnt something I guess.

Also, you tied it in the end with the guy building a huge 'god love you' post, it is just a bit hard not to connect them together to think it is some form of veiled theist message.

  • great job on the video, had a good time watching it.

  • Really well done. Great video.

  • At least it made something interesting

  • i live in centeral coast california and im17 and as soon as i get my license im going there.im also an urban explorer.

  • If you look up the Salton Sea on Google maps nearby there is a place called Mecca, which I find to be interesting...

  • Great film! Fascinating subject.

  • This industrial accident needs to die. Instead, people are trying to save it! The birds found it a hundred years ago, they'll find somewhere else. Let it die!

  • Oh, I honestly didn't know it was a figure of speech, my bad. I have in fact never heard someone use that before.

  • Nice place to visit but I wouldnt wanna live there. Amazing story I love vids like this.
