Just to let people know. I had to restart my Iphone after I replaced the fille through SSH. I use the 3GS on 4.2.1

regarding changing the file name, save the aif file to desktop then, when u booted up the WINSCP program, delete file sms-received6.caf from the system/library/audio/UISounds directory and then from windows go start, run, enter the command cmd then you should get a black screen. then type ' cd desktop and use the comand line "ren *.aif *.caf" and press enter (minus quotes)

this will change the file extension so IT WORKS compared to changing the file extension on the desktop then copy file over
