I live up in Canada on Vancouver Island, logging country. I know two fellows who while falling large trees were crushed as the tree they were cutting went thisaway insteada thataway. I make no joke about the danger of this occupation. Both these men were crushed in their limbs and pelvis's, their skulls fractured and both men were left severely crippled for life. This ain't no game. I'm an oil patch inpsector where I've worker for 30 years, and I'll stay utill I retire. Play safe!

Why "dont u just cut at the bottom?" First, it's rare to have so much space that one can dump a big tree without it hitting something, ranging from a MacMansion to another tree, in which case your fall will hang up. Second, transecting a fully loaded tree base a great way to die. The questioner has no more concept of the inertial forces involved in falling (not "felling") a big tree than he has of English contractions.

How to attempt at home?

Australian Eucalypt. Hardwood trees. very heavy. full of Oil. kills lots of people by dropping branches on them, bushfires, etc. Will drop a branch for no reason. but we do have laws in Australia that concern the lopping/pruning or felling of these trees. however the Energy Companies and Air Services Australia have to from time to time, remove any threat to electrical supplies or air travel. this is to ensure that tree huggers can post on websites, and travel to tree hugging demonstrations.

I was telling an american guy a while back on here about how hard our native timbers are, here in Australia and he said "Oak is the hardest timber that I've cut. Is it harder than that?". They simply don't have timbers as dense or as hard over there. I was talking about ironbark at the time.
