It's necessary to keep the seal population down otherwise there'd be an additional 250,000 seals depleting the natural resources. Regardless of what you think human beings really are more important than animals. Animal populations are often culled since animals like many stupid humans don't know when to stop producing offspring. The effect of too many of a particular species in any environment can wreak havoc on an ecosystem. Use common sense people
Actually you are lying. Seal populations according to surveys are dropping like a stone. Half the seal nurseries disappeared last year because of ice loss due to global warming. As a kid I raised money to end the seal slaughters. They ended in 1986. They started again in 1996. Now, as an adult, I have become a commercial pilot and I have volunteered to fly a spotting plane for a major animal activist group to help slow the sealers down. Volunteer. Donate. I should say again that I DO NOT SUPPORT THE SEAL HUNT and I am NOT AN "ANIMAL-HATER".
All I'm saying is that 99% of the outcry over this is for the wrong reasons, the way your going about this is wrong, and you're weakening support for real action by using "cute politics".
How is it not effective the way they're "going about this"???? Canada lost 465 million, adjusted for inflation, on the boycotts, snow crab is also being boycotted and that's the mainstay of newfie's income. Continue boycotting Canadian seafood, especially Red lobster. IT IS WORKING. Go to Red Lobster dot comm and inform them of your intention to boycott - the Humane Society of the US led boycott is responsible for the $465 million drop in the value of Canadian exports of snow crabs — the main seafood export to the United States from Canada's seal killing provinces — since April 2005. The value of 2007 snow crab exports is 44 percent lower than it was in 2004, the year prior to the boycott.
The seal killers always whine about economic "opportunities" for Canada's "poor" coastal communities. Last year this entire economic "opportunity" was $12-million, the value of all seal pelts. Half of that is eaten up by expenses, so at most, only $6 million went to the sealers: in other words one-tenth of 1% of Newfoundlands GDP. This year it will be even less, because pelts of three to four week old "beaters" -- 95% of the seal babies that are murdered -- are selling for between $6 and $33.
You have to be careful what you do, and think about the consequences. Trappers/hunters want to protect the resource. If trapping/hunting is banned, then other industries will move in and may make these species extinct, because they don't need the animals, just lumber/oil/etc.
It is foolish to attack these industries without first removing the system in which they operate, or else you cause worse disasters. A hunted species is better than an extinct one.
The Newfoundland economy must be crippled. Let's see if they are ready to trade a measly $18 million dollar brutal seal massacre for their billion dollar sea food trade. Go to the Red Lobster dot com page and inform them that you, your family and friends will boycott them if they purchase Canadian seafood. Red Lobster is the top purchaser of Canadian Seafood in the world and they buy lobster shrimp crab scallops and salmon, which are fished by those who also club and torture baby seals.
The fishing tanked badly a while ago...I have relatives out there. They have to leave the province to find work. Some don't want to. Thats probably why the seal hunt is bigger now.

Here's some great news. this year buyers are offering only $35 per pelt, half of last year's price, while fuel prices are soaring. Many sealers are saying they are better off staying at home. Now wait for the European Unions move toward a complete European ban on the seal trade. The ice is abnormally thick and preventing the sealer scum from getting to the herd. Hopefully it stays thick as hell for the whole season. This means there is a god and divine justice will catch up to the seal killers.

It's necessary to keep the seal population down otherwise there'd be an additional 250,000 seals depleting the natural resources. Regardless of what you think human beings really are more important than animals. Animal populations are often culled since animals like many stupid humans don't know when to stop producing offspring. Actually you are lying. Seal populations according to surveys are dropping like a stone. Half the seal nurseries disappeared last year because of ice loss due to global warming. But just as the criminals who call themselves "sealers" & the corrupt DFO wiped out all the fish and then tried to hide their tracks, a small group of greedy criminals are trying to wipe out seals. You don't care about your own people or about Canada. That makes sealers hard core criminals and traitors to their country.

Another point you fail to mention. The seals were around when settlers arrived at 10 times their current numbers. At that time the seas were teaming with cod. The seals are in fact part of a carefully balanced web. The diet of seals is only 3% food fish. The rest of their diet is PREDATORS of cod such as skate & squid. So all the 100s of millions of haddock, whiting & plaice that the Canadians destroyed from personal greed will never come back, since with less seals their predators are rampant

As a kid I raised money to end the seal slaughters. They ended in 1986. They started again in 1996. Now, as an adult, I have become a commercial pilot and I have volunteered to fly a spotting plane for a major animal activist group to help slow the sealers down. Volunteer. Donate. The seal killers always whine about economic "opportunities" for Canada's "poor" coastal communities. Last year this entire economic "opportunity" was $12-million, the value of all seal pelts. Half of that is eaten up by expenses, so at most, only $6 million went to the sealers: in other words one-tenth of 1% of Newfoundlands GDP. This year it will be even less, because pelts of three to four week old "beaters" -- 95% of the seal babies that are murdered -- are selling for between $6 and $33.

On the trapping industry in general:
You have to be careful what you do, and think about the consequences. Trappers/hunters want to protect the resource. If trapping/hunting is banned, then other industries will move in and may make these species extinct, because they don't need the animals, just lumber/oil/etc.
It is foolish to attack these industries without first removing the system in which they operate, or else you cause worse disasters. A hunted species is better than an extinct one.

The fishing tanked badly a while ago...I have relatives out there. They have to leave the province to find work. Some don't want to. Thats probably why the seal hunt is bigger now.
The protests have done nothing. It been down for a while due to the world market, not the seal hunt.
It's no worse than any other form of hunting/trapping. 90% of hunters use rifles.

Here's some great news. this year buyers are offering only $35 per pelt, half of last year's price, while fuel prices are soaring. Many sealers are saying they are better off staying at home. Now wait for the European Unions move toward a complete European ban on the seal trade. The ice is abnormally thick and preventing the sealer scum from getting to the herd. Hopefully it stays thick as hell for the whole season. This means there is a god and divine justice will catch up to the seal killers.
