One of the funniest things about "Great White North" (IMO) is its backstory: "SCTV" was a US show, but filmed in Canada to save money. The Canadian government insisted that if they were to lens everything regularly in Canada, the show had to have at least 2 minutes of "Canadian content." It was from this necessity that "GWN" was born. I wonder if anyone thought "GWN" would wind up being the most recognizable bit from the show, and the only one to produce spin-offs? (an album and a movie)

@usergreg1498 SCTV was not originally an American show to "save money". In fact, it aired in Canada for about 3 seasons before it hit the states. It was a showcase for the Toronto Second City. It was "set (fictional melonville)" in the states, but any southern-ontarian can tell you that every episode is chalk-full of canadian references (streets names, town names, etc). You are right though, about GWN being added for more "canadian" content. Good call, eh?

Though upon consideration, I suppose it might have occurred to me; I know for a fact Rick Moranis is a Canuck, and as it happens was friends with Geddy Lee when they were in school, which I believe is how he and Dave Thomas were able to get him on board to do "Take Off" on their album. I thought that was kinda cool, myself.

@usergreg1498 i believe that geddy was a fan of SCTV because if you watch the live video of The Weapon from the Grace Under Pressure DVD you see (i've sadly never watched any SCTV though i plan to) the vampire character opening it up. and in their latest live DVD Snakes and Arrows live, rick moranis and dave thomas introduced the song The Larger Bowl. sadly that is all i know and i am not too sure if it was accurate or not.
