It is at the discretion of the president to return or not return a salute at any time. It has ALWAYS been this way. The president as Commander in Chief would be RETURNING salutes ALL DAY LONG as EVERYONE in the armed forces is his subordinate and MUST salute him when comes into the same space as they are in.
When you visit another country, you are not an equal, you are the visitor, guess, prisoner, or whatever-the-case, regardless of your social/political status. The President did right by greeting the heads of other countries the way that he wanted to or did; showing gratitude and humility. This only show weakness, if you are weak and afraid. I would say Americans, on a whole, are neither. It showed respect.

The Emporer has a much higher position (when in his own land) than a foreign President. If the Emporer came to the US to meet Obama, he certainly would bow to thank his gracious host. In Japan, people pay respects/greet the emperor with a bow at the waist. The emperor's custom is to not bow below the bow of others. It is their way & social protocol. It was sort of an exchange. Obama bowed, Akihito shook hands. Do you wear shoes in someone's home when shoes are not permitted? It's no longer your way in someone else's home.
but if you watch closely, Akihito DOES bow slightly in accord with Japanese customs and protocol, to not bow below the bow of others. It usually appears in a slight head tilt.

Yes it is customary to bow to everyone in Japan. However the submissive party bows deeper and holds the bow longer. The office of Protocol should have made the President aware of this. Obama's predilection for bowing is more troubling in Saudi Arabia where custom dictates you only bow to your superiors. I prefer Reagan's firm handshake and warm smile to the "when in Rome" obsequiousness favored by the current administration.

When you visit another country, you are not an equal, you are the visitor, guess, prisoner, or whatever-the-case, regardless of your social/political status. The President did right by greeting the heads of other countries the way that he wanted to or did; showing gratitude and humility. This only show weakness, if you are weak and afraid. I would say Americans, on a whole, are neither. It showed respect.

Greta, I'm not trying to be cruel. I just want to let you know that in Japan, bowing deeply is a normal greeting. The Emporer has a much higher position (when in his own land) than a foreign President. If the Emporer came to the US to meet Obama, he certainly would bow to thank his gracious host. I don't agree with Obama's policies, but he was just respecting their greeting tradition in their land. (I am Japanese-American.)

As an American expat in Japan, it's nice to see a President show a bit of respect abroad. America's image suffered horribly during Bush's cowboy diplomacy and warmongering. Obama's gestures are slowly gaining the trust and respect of our our former friends. Global lesson: The president was perfect. He's in someone else's "home", thus being respectful & humble to learn & abide by the customs of Japan. In Japan, people pay respects/greet the emperor with a bow at the waist. The emperor's custom is to not bow below the bow of others. It is their way & social protocol. It was sort of an exchange. Obama bowed, Akihito shook hands. Do you wear shoes in someone's home when shoes are not permitted? It's no longer your way in someone else's home.

I'm pretty sure you're more upset about this than the actual Emperor of Japan. Unless you meant to criticize the Emperor for not bowing back, I can't really tell. But for whatever social error Obama might have committed, he is still far more respected in Japan than Bush and Cheney.

If you dont know anything about another culture, simply don't say anything. You are embarrassing yourself and America as a whole. The Japanese emperor, the Saudi king, England's queen all have 1000s of years of tradition, where as you are simply a blabber mouth chic on Wisteria Lane. When you go to meet the Emperor IN JAPAN, you bow and show respect . Its how its done. Obama had a choice of visitng him. Because of Obama's bow, he is even more respected by the people in Japan.

Bowing is natural, like shaking hands. You are just unfamiliar with the customs of Japan. Obama did it perfectly. Any person in his position should have done the same. The handshake is what's not natural in this situation. Touching hands is not customary, nor is it a symbol of friendship or trust in this situation. Simple.

Yes it is customary to bow to everyone in Japan. However the submissive party bows deeper and holds the bow longer. The office of Protocol should have made the President aware of this. Obama's predilection for bowing is more troubling in Saudi Arabia where custom dictates you only bow to your superiors. I prefer Reagan's firm handshake and warm smile to the "when in Rome" obsequiousness favored by the current administration.
