this game isn't underrated! this game simply sucks! when you compare this game to something like devil may cry or even a game like samurai warriors, you'll see how this game sucks.
Cool vid. I just bought this off ebay and can't wait to play it. I am a huge fan of fromsoftware games. It is interesting that your character is more anime style, unlike say the King's Field and Shadow Tower series.
So far the game has no atmosphere and you are killing the same monster type over and over again. Based on what you have demonstrated so far, I would stay far away from this game.
This game is great, bought it for 2 bucks. Laughed when I saw it because I heard it was the worst game/ost ever. It is fun! BTW, I only got it because I liked kings field and demons souls, and this is made by the same people.
I started to play it like 9-10 years later and I love it. And the music is wierdly beautifull. But then I bought another PS3 with 160G and gave my old PS3 60G to my big brother, sadly I couldn´t play it anymore. I didnt finish it...
I really enjoyed Demon's Souls so I looked up the games that came before it and I just picked up King's Field and Evergrace today and while i haven't played this game yet, I am def liking the way it looks and plays. The slower style makes every kill so much more rewarding. Thumbs up to you for sticking to your guns about this game!
i got stuck in the first dungeon lol this gameis great people dont realize the first games for ps2 didnt have great graphics same with ps3 golden axe its because companies dont really know how to unleash the true power of sony thats why games sony makes are always perfect

I haven't played Evergrace (screw you *flicks off* IGN and Gayspot), but I do love rpgs w/ action adventure elements (which I love more than turn based). Before KH or Rogue Galaxy had a game this was the 1st ARPG for the ps2 (could be wrong here). I should definitely buy/play this game from some store not too faraway that sells used ps2 copies before I get a ps3 w/ Demon's Souls and/or Dark Souls.
The funny thing about the music is that you can hear undertones of Armored Core's music trying to break out. But they keep it under whatever the main instrument is. A harpsichord maybe?
I had been trying to remember the name of this game for 2 fucking years!! Looked through a list of every rpg title for the ps2 and found it just now! Oh the nostalgia was worth the wait. :)
keep in mind everyone that this game was very glitchy as fuck from its initial release. Its an action RPG, and a PS2 launch title i enjoyed it overall, but i still prefer Shining Tears, Kingdom Hearts, II, II Final Mix Plus,Tales of Destiny Directors Cut,Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Symphonia, Tales of PHantasia,Tales of Vesperia, Star ocean the Last Hope International, Final Fantasy IV,VI,X, XIII, Drakengard,Drakengard 2, Romancing Saga, and many more RPG's. Lets not forget Chrono trigger.

Pundits often only give a mainstream reaction to what their playing but atleast Gamepro and IGN liked Evergrace, but both have rather questionable credibility as well imo. It looks like something that is worth a try though. I'm tempted to have a crack at the first person adventure genre someday with the King's Field games also.

Hey teh2Dgamer. Just want you to know I really appreciate, and enjoy, your videos. Thanks to you I have discovered games I never knew existed or forgot existed. My collection is growing thanks to you. Keep doing what you doing.
haha this is not an underrated gem, this just fucking sucked, where's eternal ring? lol man these choices for "underrated gem" are shitty, steambot chronicles, notwithstanding
@geddoe316 These are my choices based on my opinion. If you don't like my opinion, then stay the fuck off of my vids, and go make your own "great list of vids." Mr elitist. Plus if you read the descriptions, I specifically say certain games aren't for everyone, so fuck off go make your own no doubt great list of vids, and keep your ass off of my vids.
Chances are you haven't even played half of these games anyways and are talking out of ignorance.
I wouldnt so much call this underrated. It didnt do many things very well.
The storyline is pretty shallow, with nothing particularly well explained.
Combat is fairly basic but often frustrating. The main problems being its slow pace, awkward targeting and the enormous pushback enemies have on you, causing you to plummet down holes for a game over.
Evidentally burrows ideas from kings field. Somehow works much better for KF though.
Compliments to its soundtrack and customization though.
it is a kinda decent game and i agree it is totally overlooked even gamestop wouldn't accept it the last time i checked but i hate the fact tht if you die you have to start from your last save HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, haha. But if you wouldn't criticize them, people would forgot about them — you're giving them a favour, talking about their bad reviews. See, these guys aren't real gamers, it's their job and I personally think it's bad one. So leave them to mentally die slowly. Young kids will eat shit anyway. ;)
I really like old games. And this one reminds me Guardian War for 3DO: about the same large deserted areas with monsters, unhurried motions, many items to use and some story. Perfect. :)
@gathimest The gameplay doesn't even suck IMO. It's just slower paced like the King's Field games. It's amazing, everyone hates this, and the King's Field games, and has ripped into them for years, but they all now love Demon's Souls.
@teh2Dgamer fuck'em man!!! all these people don't know shit about games. king's field games are bad ass and fromsoftware kicks ass. if they made king's field for ps3 it would kick massive ass just like demon's souls did.
i dont like those games but love demons souls, and they are completely different games. and demons souls isnt first person, and has better gameplay and its online is awesome
Did you ever get to play Forever Kingdom, on PS2? It's the sequel to this game. I own it and I swear to god every time I bring the game up people always ask me, "wasn't that canceled?" and it took me until just last year to find a copy of the game.
This game really is amazing. I played it years ago on my cousin's PS2 and I was hooked. I liked the item system (like how weapons and armor needed repair after a certain time) and how the two story lines merge together later in the game. This game rocks :D
i agree completely with your rant there. i usually don't listen to reviews at all. if it's a developer i know and trust and the game LOOKS fun i'll buy it.
thanx for uploading this video, i love this game and glad to find im not the only one. =] One of the things i love about this game is that i actually feel like im in another world. Which i love, especially sense most rpgs take place in another world.
There are so many unique things about this game, the soundtrack, the surroundings and the monsters, most games have dragons and trolls, this game has those melon-headed warriors. This is a one of a kind.
not because it's different, but i dont like the power meter concept due to my impatience and i wasnt too crazy about the music in the first portion of the vid.
but the store music and what i've heard about the level of customization make me rethink it, but overall i kinda doubt i'd finish it.
Ooooh, I think I remember trying this game out wayyyyy back when... I didn't get very far in it though (I think I just played it at a friend's), but I guess it didn't keep my interest 'cause I didn't buy it, lol. I think the main reason why it didn't keep my interest was because it didn't really seem to bring much of anything new to the genre... But maybe I'll try it out again =P At first it looks kinda boring, but I think I can see how you could get into it more.
I agree with the OP here, this game is amazingly fun and has great customization options and some replayability
It gets a bit complicated in some bits ( i seem to recall a wizards tower full of doors that only open if you wear specific colours) but overall its a fun game with some awesome special attacks.
LOL at the buying a car vs a 5 dollar game. Argument is a fallacy dude. Having played both next gen games and this I would prefer this game. Why? The fucking awesome soundtrack that's why. Most games go orchestral or rock but this game makes you go WTF. Kudos to the composer of evergrace for being different. Secondly, it is a simple, yet challenging dungeon crawler. Star ocean 4 for 360 was pretty hard but.....the jrpg cliches was very overwhelming. I could not stand the storyline at all.

Wow, what horrible gameplay. It seems these days folks have rose colored glasses when it comes to older titles. Just because a title was niche and unknown does not make it a gem. Avoid this game at all costs as there is much better out there.
I'm not playing ti through glasses because it's old, the age means nothing, and if I judged every game by the fact that there's a better game out there, I wouldn't even touch any of the games from the new generation.
I take games for what they have to offer, and not what some other game has to offer.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If you truly do take games for what they have to offer, and not what some other game has to offer, then where is your frame of reference? It would be like buying the first car you saw on a lot lot because you take cars for what they have to offer, and not what some other car has to offer. That, my friend, is the purest form of ignorance. That being said, I highly doubt you can do that as humans are naturally creatures of bias formed from past experiences. It's time to up your standards.
WTF does buying a car have to do with playing a video game? There's a whole different mindset. Video games are meant to entertain people, and when taken at the most basic, if a game has enough positives about it to entertain me, then it worth my time to play.
Also, think of context. This game isn't comparable to other hack and slashers, because it's not trying to be them. If it was a copy of something that's one thing, but it's it's own unique experience, and should be taken as such.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wow....what a glitchy game at 00:30. And a whole bunch of collision detection glitches I can't bring myself to play this shit, they should make prisoners play this...
i bought this game for 2 bucks cuz when i was small ive always wanted to play it so i wanted try it out now that im older..And after i played 2 times i broke that game in half it SUCKS Balls..i couldve bought a good ice cream with 2 bucks or a better GAME
you copied and pasted this comment didnt you. this isnt the first time u hav posted this very same comment. -,- is you dont like the game you dont like it, thats it
You're serieously going to complain about the graphics in a launch game? Furthemore, you're seriously going to complain about graphics in a PS2 game? Sad really.
You sound funny writing so serious about my comment :P.Of course I am "complaining" because I've bought other launch titles back then and compared to them, this game "is none" :P.And I did not specifically criticize the PS2 graphics cuz the PS2 can render awesome stuff, like Final Fantasy 10 and 12,Tales of Symphonia,Star Ocean 3,Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1+2 and so on >;].So,what's YOUR point? :|
LOL i love this game so much im the first ever to do a LP of it on youtube if you got time check it out (the first 2 vids arnt really great but hey im just starting) LMAO well nice rant man i agree =D
This is my all time favorite game, hands down. It's sad that there's not many other fans, I mention this game all the time, but no one ever knows what I'm talking about.
Though this game has a couple of serious problems, but that's to expected from a game that was meant for the ps1 and rushed through production to the states and the ps2. There's also an Evergrace novel series in Japan, but a snowball's chance in Hell we'll ever see that... T_T
I gave it a chance, but I couldn't get myself to like it other than it's weird soundtrack. However, I do understand that people have different points of view and not in a position to tell anybody what they should like.
The way I see it, reviews (professional or amateur) should be taken with a grain salt. They are merely opinions of the reviewer, although some back up their arguments better than others. It's best to just to try a game yourself rather developed preconceived ideas about a game.
Like I said, it's not for everyone. There are huge fans of the King's Field series out there, but most will find them to be slow and boring, and this game has a similar feel. I, however, love the King's Field series, but it's an acquired taste, and I understand that. I try and make it clear when one of my underrated gems won't be to everyone's tastes, and people should be cautious about a game.
I think the reviews tend to over-dramatize some game's flaws more than others, and the sad fact is that most gamers seem to eat up reviews like they're fact which infuriates me.
You raise a good point, but reviews are inherently biased. What is aspect of a game is considered more important varies by individual and highly debatable. Those who favor online play, for instance, are more likely to knock a game when it doesn't have that feature. I agree that too many people look to these reviews as a final authority, but it's their fault for readily accepting anything said to them in the first place.
Right on with your rant. I used to not give games the time of day unless they got an 8/10 or higher. Now that I have seen the error of my ways I am able to enjoy all the supposedly bad games I missed out on and judge them for myself. I rely on player reviews nowadays much more than professional reviews. It amazes me how little some of these so-called professional reviewers know about the games they review, missing the concept of the game entirely at times.
Ah, I saw this game for sale and wanted to give it a try. But those reviewers stopped me from buying it. Thanks for this vid, I might just try it out now. Is Forever Kingdom also for the PS2?
Definitely agree with you about reviewers, 2DG. I get extremely upset about reviews nowadays, especially ones about RPGs. It's to the point that I honestly try to avoid reviews and just watch gameplay videos to prevent getting any biased opinions.
As for this game, wasn't it out pretty early in the PS2 lifecycle? Pretty cool that the armor changing actually changes your armor.
I've played this before, and I gotta admit, it's friggin' awesome! Speaking of underrated gems, I just beat Eternal Ring, which I highly recommend. It's got a King's Filed feel, but it focuses more on magic than sword fighting. It's hard as hell, but fun too. :D
dont worry bout the 1 star raters, i get them too, i think ppl subscribe just to rate 1star because something that was said to them before, heres a 5 though. oh and gotta get skies of arcadia my #2 favorite mmorpg (and #1 isnt a ff game) lol

I've owned this game and here are the problems I remember from it.
1. The world feels empty. Not just abandoned but "it was never inhabited" empty
2. The enemies are sparse and have very limited animation
3. Poor collision detection at times
4. Sparse storyline
5. Repetitive gameplay
6. Clunky and limited combat controls
7. I'd forgotten just how... weird the music is
8. Random Crashes
And I don't dislike the genre by any means. To this day I enjoy Dark Chronicle, but Evergrace leaves me cold.

FIRST RPG FOR PS2
Huh?¿ Ey, its not a bad game, its just a game... cause ps2 was testing and this time...
AND DON'T FUCK ME WITH STEAMBOTS CHRONICLES!!!! STC IS GOD!!! DON'T BLAME IT!!!
Gameprofessional 1 year ago

Perfect. :)

so what if the gameplay sucks, the music, characters, and environments are unique (still to this day) and pretty cool.
I enjoyed it, I'm fucking sick of haters and critics.
gathimest 1 year ago
@gathimest The gameplay doesn't even suck IMO. It's just slower paced like the King's Field games. It's amazing, everyone hates this, and the King's Field games, and has ripped into them for years, but they all now love Demon's Souls.
teh2Dgamer 1 year ago 3
@teh2Dgamer I just hope From Software can really bring this type of vision out and make it successful. This is really good shit.
They know how to make decent fighting mechanics and enemy AI now, they can do it.
gathimest 1 year ago

AstronAstroll 1 year ago
This game really is amazing. I played it years ago on my cousin's PS2 and I was hooked. I liked the item system (like how weapons and armor needed repair after a certain time) and how the two story lines merge together later in the game. This game rocks :D

i agree completely with your rant there. i usually don't listen to reviews at all. if it's a developer i know and trust and the game LOOKS fun i'll buy it.

Evergrace is one of my favorite PS2 games. I've beaten it with both Darius and Sharline multiple times.
Also. If you haven't played it, Evergrace 2 was released to the US as Forever Kingdom and is another amazing game.

thanx for uploading this video, i love this game and glad to find im not the only one. =] One of the things i love about this game is that i actually feel like im in another world. Which i love, especially sense most rpgs take place in another world.
There are so many unique things about this game, the soundtrack, the surroundings and the monsters, most games have dragons and trolls, this game has those melon-headed warriors. This is a one of a kind.

i think i'll skip this one.
not because it's different, but i dont like the power meter concept due to my impatience and i wasnt too crazy about the music in the first portion of the vid.
but the store music and what i've heard about the level of customization make me rethink it, but overall i kinda doubt i'd finish it.
gaming add and all.

Avoid this game at all costs as there is much better out there.
jedahdoma 2 years ago
I'm not playing ti through glasses because it's old, the age means nothing, and if I judged every game by the fact that there's a better game out there, I wouldn't even touch any of the games from the new generation.
I take games for what they have to offer, and not what some other game has to offer.

It's time to up your standards.
jedahdoma 2 years ago
WTF does buying a car have to do with playing a video game? There's a whole different mindset. Video games are meant to entertain people, and when taken at the most basic, if a game has enough positives about it to entertain me, then it worth my time to play.
Also, think of context. This game isn't comparable to other hack and slashers, because it's not trying to be them. If it was a copy of something that's one thing, but it's it's own unique experience, and should be taken as such.

You're serieously going to complain about the graphics in a launch game? Furthemore, you're seriously going to complain about graphics in a PS2 game? Sad really.
teh2Dgamer 2 years ago
You sound funny writing so serious about my comment :P.Of course I am "complaining" because I've bought other launch titles back then and compared to them, this game "is none" :P.And I did not specifically criticize the PS2 graphics cuz the PS2 can render awesome stuff, like Final Fantasy 10 and 12,Tales of Symphonia,Star Ocean 3,Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1+2 and so on >;].So,what's YOUR point? :|
Assasinchen2006 2 years ago

This is my all time favorite game, hands down. It's sad that there's not many other fans, I mention this game all the time, but no one ever knows what I'm talking about.
Though this game has a couple of serious problems, but that's to expected from a game that was meant for the ps1 and rushed through production to the states and the ps2. There's also an Evergrace novel series in Japan, but a snowball's chance in Hell we'll ever see that... T_T
abenoseimei89 2 years ago
I gave it a chance, but I couldn't get myself to like it other than it's weird soundtrack. However, I do understand that people have different points of view and not in a position to tell anybody what they should like.
The way I see it, reviews (professional or amateur) should be taken with a grain salt. They are merely opinions of the reviewer, although some back up their arguments better than others. It's best to just to try a game yourself rather developed preconceived ideas about a game.
Stonethrower7 2 years ago 3
Like I said, it's not for everyone. There are huge fans of the King's Field series out there, but most will find them to be slow and boring, and this game has a similar feel. I, however, love the King's Field series, but it's an acquired taste, and I understand that. I try and make it clear when one of my underrated gems won't be to everyone's tastes, and people should be cautious about a game.
teh2Dgamer 2 years ago
Have you played Demon's Souls yet? Spiritual successor to King's Field, I loved it. One of the best games out on PS3 now.
Bandersnatch187 2 years ago
I don't have a PS3, so I haven't played it, but now that you've brought it to my attention, I'll definitely keep my eye on it.

Stonethrower7 2 years ago
Right on with your rant. I used to not give games the time of day unless they got an 8/10 or higher. Now that I have seen the error of my ways I am able to enjoy all the supposedly bad games I missed out on and judge them for myself. I rely on player reviews nowadays much more than professional reviews. It amazes me how little some of these so-called professional reviewers know about the games they review, missing the concept of the game entirely at times.
Bandersnatch187 2 years ago 9
I agree with your write-up there... I'm sick of these popoulist reviewers who dismiss anything that doesn't have space marines.

Forever kingdom is also on the PS2. I don't have it yet though.
This game isn't the most spectacular game ever made, but, for the price you can find it at today, it's money well spent.

Another great game underminded. Bought this years back and still have it. I saw the review of this and was mad as hell. Totally agree with you man.
Walleyboy001 2 years ago 2
