1-rhythmic shadow/light flickering in eyes from repeated structural elements as trains/people pass through building - has this been evaluated for potential to trigger epileptiform effects?
2-snow build-up; the pitch of the roof is low, smooth glass but ribbed with elements; would significant weight of snow be retained? with what loadings?
although Calatrava's work seem impressive, he lacks a well rounded approach to architecture such as emphasis on functionality and sustainability. I can see why he hasn't won the Pritzker yet.
Look at those stations man. While Europe and Asia move into the future, the Republican party plans to defund public transit although we already have a 3rd world system.
He's a great enginner but i don't like his design, I think his works are too expensive and very basic, the structure is very good but the architectural space as such doesn't think so.

Magnificent. Such beautiful, simple, elegant lines. The illuminated artificial lake, and the fountains are a very nice touch as well. Very classy, very European. This is what I imagine the future to look like. Bravo.

The poor people is starving (or still dead) ; while a few are leaving in an hypper-vintage (small) word ! That what i show in that kind of project.
@zzp1 - never mind cleaning the glass (these structures are usually self-cleaning to some extent) - who is going to pay for this? I am sure European funds are being squandered here!
nice train station , I used the Lyon St Exupery TGV station similar project if was really nice as fopt the one saying with a lot of vulgarity the naglev system will not work may I remind you than less than 100 yearsago flying was only a dream , the only person that went to the moon was Jules Verne ........heart transplant was impossible it is done weekly .......keep your vulgarity to yourself .
@nancyken159753 THAT WAS WHY THE DUTCH ARCHITECT HAD AN ASYMMETRICAL 40 STORY BUILDING FOR CCTV. BECAUSE THERE IS NO EARTHQUAKE IN BELGIUM OR HOLLAND. BUT BEIJING IS IN A KNOWN EARTHQUAKE ZONE. THAT STUPID ARCHITECT TRIED TO FIGHT AGAINST NATURE THAT THE GREAT FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT WOULD NOT IN TOKYO IN 1926, THE EMPERIAL HOTEL. GOOD ARCHITECTS WORK WITH NATURE, NOT AGAINST IT. EVEN "I-CHING" WOULD ADVISE THAT 3,000 YEARS AGO! GEORGE WU, AIA 2010-6-26
Viewers of this otherwise excellent video should not be deceived into thinking that power for the trains comes from some kind of Tesla Broadcast-Power system, but is of course delivered via unsightly overhead 15-25kV DC catenaries, which the animator has conveniently omitted.
Beautiful video; beautiful station, beautiful Thalys trains. This is setting a new level of beauty in architecture and engineering design, which will become even more sublime when outdated Conventional High Speed Rail is finally abandoned in favor of the wave of the future, which is of course 500-600kmh Maglev.
Maglev: NO MOVING PARTS, i.e., no wheels, hence no axles; no suspension; no electric motors, hence no gears or drive-train. Consider what that means in terms of safety and maintenance.
500 millions d'euros ca a couté ? c'ets bien ca ?
hi everybody, i dont good speak english sorry, but i come from liege, and i can tell you, that station is not ready to finish soon ;) (i don't know if what i wrote is exact in english, very sorry )
lol. WOW! It's a Beautiful building! If you could only get all the building's in the city to look like that. Then I would leave the States and come visit!
Pretty telling that no overhead-wires are depicted in the video.. That would make it all look a lot worse.. A lot more realistic as well, but hey.. What's realism when we're talking about the work of a genius.. Alternatively you could have all the trains putting out diesel fumes.. that would be nice too..
Real would also be a ton more people hanging around for a place that size. But they wouldn't be as leisurely as these people. they would be running and dragging lots of luggage. Also there would be way more cars and trains coming and going and more noise than classical music!
Santiago Calatrava, just as the title and the discription says. :) By the way, this construction is absolutely fabulous. Hope to see it when it's ready. :)
I used to travel through the trainstation a fair amount and watched over a period of a few years as they gradually built this new station. Absolutely incredible! Is Liege carrying through with Santiago's vision of the wide passage from the front of the station down to the river/canal ? It looks like a lot of buildings need to come down to make that happen. Will it happen?
A dir poco spettacolare!
Here's an Idea!
Let's build it out of LEGO first before spending 500 million euros on a glass surface!

Looks fantastic! A lovely shape.
Two practical concerns..(which may be needless)..

Design is a matter of taste - I do not comment on that part.
Practicality however, is far to seek. Specifical in Belgium where the word maintainance does not exist.
It will be a very cold station, being open at all sides ......
But the music is beautiful .........

A dir poco spettacolare!
