  • Here's an Idea!

Let's build it out of LEGO first before spending 500 million euros on a glass surface!

    What if there is hail?

  • how much cost this ?

  • ¡excelent!

  • What happened to the reflecting pool? I don't see one in any of the recent real-time videos.

  • Looks fantastic! A lovely shape.

Two practical concerns..(which may be needless)..

1-rhythmic shadow/light flickering in eyes from repeated structural elements as trains/people pass through building - has this been evaluated for potential to trigger epileptiform effects?

2-snow build-up; the pitch of the roof is low, smooth glass but ribbed with elements; would significant weight of snow be retained? with what loadings?

  • Dont throw rocks if you live in a glass train station.

  • Very attractive animation.

However, the project is not financable - their is no money in bankrupt Liège to support such a futuristic project....

  • @zzp1 The station was opened on september 18, 2009. Apparently they found the money.

  • ANYONE KNOWS WHAT PROGRAMME IS USED TO DO THIS ANIMATIOM???, HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP XD

  • its a shame that the rest of Liege is DISGUSTING

  • waouh excellent hope we can go one day in this future i really love it make that change!!!!

  • Extremly beautiful, absolutely impressive...well done.

  • although Calatrava's work seem impressive, he lacks a well rounded approach to architecture such as emphasis on functionality and sustainability. I can see why he hasn't won the Pritzker yet.

  • Look at those stations man. While Europe and Asia move into the future, the Republican party plans to defund public transit although we already have a 3rd world system.

  • I think one could have made more out of it... if your using so vast glass roofs you could design them in a more... hmmm.... unexpected style

  • Design is a matter of taste - I do not comment on that part.

Practicality however, is far to seek. Specifical in Belgium where the word maintainance does not exist.

It will be a very cold station, being open at all sides ......

But the music is beautiful .........

  • He's a great enginner but i don't like his design, I think his works are too expensive and very basic, the structure is very good but the architectural space as such doesn't think so.

  • great interior design!!!

  • Driving up to that, you'd feel like you're approaching a fancy music hall, when in fact it's a train station. This is the way things should be done......create for beauty, not just functionality.

  • Magnificent. Such beautiful, simple, elegant lines. The illuminated artificial lake, and the fountains are a very nice touch as well. Very classy, very European. This is what I imagine the future to look like. Bravo.

  • i feel bad when a major hail storm comes blowing over that glass roof. or some cases an earthquake thats if theyer in a spot vonerable to quakes. its a beutifule station

  • @sonicfart111 Earthquakes aren't really a problem in Belgium. The closest active spot is in Turkey wich is more than 2000 Km (1300 Mi) Away.

  • @Rlouckxke i did recharch on belgium on the usgs website belgium does get earthquakes ranging from 1.2 to 3.7 magnitued i think i seen some higher magnitueds on the website. they had a 2.4 quake just of shore nov 2 2010. go look it up on usgs.org u ge a better understanding. hey u can look up what town u live in to.so see what u think and reply back. and have a good weekend.

  • @sonicfart111 I know ther have been some earthquakes in belgium. Some even a bit devastating. But what i mean is that in Belgium you don't really have to worry about it. I didn't even feel the hardest earthquake i ever knew happening here.

  • @Rlouckxke ok. i live on the east coast of usa where no earthquakes even exsist but a few months ago about 15 miles west of my house an 4.2 quake happen about 5:30 am monday and i felt it. it kinda scared the shit out of me i've never in my life experiance that ever. i've just geting up for work that morning. the quake was felt in dc. dc is about 75 miles south of me. the quake did not couse any damage at all.

  • Precies of daar alleen Thalyssen rijden...

The poor people is starving (or still dead) ; while a few are leaving in an hypper-vintage (small) word ! That what i show in that kind of project.

  • @Waldgaard I've never been dissapointed by Santiago's work.

  • @Waldgaard not his work

  • santiago you're the best

  • Who is going to clean the glass surface?

  • @zzp1 - never mind cleaning the glass (these structures are usually self-cleaning to some extent) - who is going to pay for this? I am sure European funds are being squandered here!

  • @zzp1 you

  • @zzp1 Rain -that falls most of the year- will clean the glass surface

  • @zzp1 Consuela. (From Family Guy) XD

  • @zzp1 robots.

  • @zzp1 auto cleaning glass , hidrophobic superficie.

  • It will collapse.

  • @campolicejeff no it will not

  • Man. If they had something even close to that in the United States. Europe is way ahead in everything.

  • nice train station , I used the Lyon St Exupery TGV station similar project if was really nice as fopt the one saying with a lot of vulgarity the naglev system will not work may I remind you than less than 100 yearsago flying was only a dream , the only person that went to the moon was Jules Verne ........heart transplant was impossible it is done weekly .......keep your vulgarity to yourself .

  • what software is used to produce this beauty??? is it maya? i need to get on that

  • @pcfresh88 may be maya but it's rather 3ds max cause it's more popular than maya

  • He is the man in arquitecture!!!}

  • I've been there, used it ;) Really nice!

  • Perfect!

  • @Peterwhitlock

In Belgium, there are no earthquakes.

the railway station is already opened.

  • @nancyken159753 THAT WAS WHY THE DUTCH ARCHITECT HAD AN ASYMMETRICAL 40 STORY BUILDING FOR CCTV. BECAUSE THERE IS NO EARTHQUAKE IN BELGIUM OR HOLLAND. BUT BEIJING IS IN A KNOWN EARTHQUAKE ZONE. THAT STUPID ARCHITECT TRIED TO FIGHT AGAINST NATURE THAT THE GREAT FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT WOULD NOT IN TOKYO IN 1926, THE EMPERIAL HOTEL. GOOD ARCHITECTS WORK WITH NATURE, NOT AGAINST IT. EVEN "I-CHING" WOULD ADVISE THAT 3,000 YEARS AGO! GEORGE WU, AIA 2010-6-26

  • Viva Santiago Calatrava!

Viewers of this otherwise excellent video should not be deceived into thinking that power for the trains comes from some kind of Tesla Broadcast-Power system, but is of course delivered via unsightly overhead 15-25kV DC catenaries, which the animator has conveniently omitted.

  • Beautiful video; beautiful station, beautiful Thalys trains. This is setting a new level of beauty in architecture and engineering design, which will become even more sublime when outdated Conventional High Speed Rail is finally abandoned in favor of the wave of the future, which is of course 500-600kmh Maglev.

Maglev: NO MOVING PARTS, i.e., no wheels, hence no axles; no suspension; no electric motors, hence no gears or drive-train. Consider what that means in terms of safety and maintenance.

  • Agreed totally...maglev is the way to go in the future. Less maintenance cost and future out of cost to taxpayers.

  • you need an umbrella inside

  • too many windows to clean...

  • No problem, they only need machines and rain Water.

  • only junkies and hobos in Liège ...

  • The station is built and it looks like an alien ship has landed!

  • Happy new year from boring Belgium!

  • Really WOW WOW WOW WOW WO0W.

    i LOVE TECHNOLOGY&THE FUTURE!

    Thanks for this video :)

  • im indonesian....this is so amazing.. :) !

  • calatrava never ceases to amaze....

    exquisite....

  • J´aime Liege!!! The station is so beautiful, although Atocha is my favorite!

  • 500 millions d'euros ca a couté ? c'ets bien ca ?

  • after many years now is done great building

  • :D I'm proud to say that one of the world's most beautiful railway stations is situates in Belgium !! :D love my country soooooo much

  • Even two of the most beautiful stations, Antwerp Central is also an amazing train station.

(Too bad the ones in Brussels are so ugly)

  • @jodonalds

    me tooo!

  • Inaugurated today !

    So beautiful !

  • thats perfect!!! wonderful

  • I lived to 5 minutes of walk and i can you say that, this station is in a good progressing. : )

  • WTF

    FULL OF GLASS?

  • my city :)

  • Extraordinary!

  • this is a monster! how did you do it? how many softwares did you use? Thanks

  • hi everybody, i dont good speak english sorry, but i come from liege, and i can tell you, that station is not ready to finish soon ;) (i don't know if what i wrote is exact in english, very sorry )

  • Beautiful station!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There is only a problem in these simulations: it doesn't rain.

  • rapport ??

  • All Aboard! Next Stop.....Utopia.

  • This building is giving me eyegazms!

  • i met the architect

  • What was he like? How old was he? And where from?

    Thanks in advance :)

  • i was too starstruck to say any thing.

  • hes from valencia and he is in his 50s

  • Hi Santiago Calatrava is spanish, about 60 years old. You can look it up in the wikipedia.

  • @oberonne maybe the surface can be embedded with solar energy technology.

  • Not yet, it would be finished on september 2009 or 2010, i don't know exactly... But it's an amazing work.

  • is it completed by now?

  • this animation make me dizzy lol

  • lovely! :)

  • lol. WOW! It's a Beautiful building! If you could only get all the building's in the city to look like that. Then I would leave the States and come visit!

  • does anyone know composer details of the music?

  • The music is by César Franck, who was born in Liége, but made his career in Paris.

  • Thank you.

  • Whenever I see buildings like this I wonder if this is what cities of the future will look like.

  • everything starts with a vision....

    cheers to this man..

  • impresionante, con el sello de Calatrava

  • looks like it will be very chilly in the winter

  • My thoughts exactly!

Calatrava's work is not suitable for the cold Belgian winters...

    Very beautiful nevertheless...

  • magnificent architecture and detailed brilliant animation...

the classical music seems to be completely appropriate as well: thatnisn already a classical example for the XXI century architecture, so...

  • Pretty telling that no overhead-wires are depicted in the video.. That would make it all look a lot worse.. A lot more realistic as well, but hey.. What's realism when we're talking about the work of a genius.. Alternatively you could have all the trains putting out diesel fumes.. that would be nice too..

  • Real would also be a ton more people hanging around for a place that size. But they wouldn't be as leisurely as these people. they would be running and dragging lots of luggage. Also there would be way more cars and trains coming and going and more noise than classical music!

  • Calatrava is trully a gift from the gods for us human beings his work is a touch of heaven on earth.

  • esta padrisimo lo k hace santiago

  • Si.

  • Unrealistic. Not because of the train station, but because of the blue sky! Should be grey, even black with dark water everywhere!

  • Aahahah.. yah right :) polution and black walls every where ...

    Dommage.

  • ufelcher please elaborate..whats making you doubt that calatrave not an architect/engineer.

what is wrong with his work

  • from valencia, of course... de benimamet, che!!! ixe calatrava, que amo!!!

  • calatrava is both an architect and an engineer..a genious...

  • Wow. Who's his engineer? lol

  • Santiago Calatrava, just as the title and the discription says. :) By the way, this construction is absolutely fabulous. Hope to see it when it's ready. :)

  • Well usually when it says "designed by" it usually means architect. So I guess Calatrava's both. Thanks!

  • ai me pintare io unos trenes xD

  • eso donde es¿??

  • à liège en belgique. Lieja en Belgica (walonnie)

  • How is this station goin?

  • Proud, proud proud to have a Calatrava's building in my town!!!

...I just hope that La Ville will have the money to construct the whole project!

  • I used to travel through the trainstation a fair amount and watched over a period of a few years as they gradually built this new station. Absolutely incredible! Is Liege carrying through with Santiago's vision of the wide passage from the front of the station down to the river/canal ? It looks like a lot of buildings need to come down to make that happen. Will it happen?

  • exactly how long did it take you (all) to make this?????

  • Does anyone know what the music score is?

  • A dir poco spettacolare!

  • One of the great architectural, engineering, and artistic minds of our day!

  • That's great - Thanks!
