This is the original version :) and wow what a great performance. So anyone who is saying blah blah this new band from the 90's 200's 2010 did this song better than she did and therefore this is bad is missing the fact that she wrote this and she and the band (group) were the first to do this kind of thing way back in 1975. This is as original and good as it gets. Thanks Patti and Patti Smith Group, you are fantastic musicians and human beings. Thanks for posting this is magical. :) <3
INCREDIBLE! She is fantastic/amazing, and so is the band! Best version of the song, and the original too. :) Wow what a great performance! Thank you for posting and sharing this. The vocals are just sublime I can't do that with my voice so many changes in such a short period of time and this is punk/rock n' roll not opera just amazing theres no one like Patti Smith/Patti Smith Group, great musician/musicians, legendary! Wish I was at the concert I wasn't born yet. Much love for posting <3
@Punkdistillers6 I know! It's amazing, she's really naturally talented/gifted so few people can do that especially with this kind of music (punk/rock n' roll), its sooo hard to do (im a vocalist and i will never ever ever even come close to comparing with the greatness of Patti Smith in this performance, this song and well everything she has done, is doing, and will do. She's the best. You're right on so right.)
this of the sweden 1976 patti's concert appears to be the oldest one on youtube/net...very strange, for an american artist..to be on its oldest live performance on a european scene.... love patti so much..
This video was shot very shortly before Patti fell off the stage at Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa Florida. I was at the Tampa show and recorded a bootleg cassette of the event.
Let's see. All93Star wrote "patti smith can sing well but in this song i really don't like her voice. RobbyStyrene wrote "Patti Smith a little crying ugly baby". spaceboy32 wrote "my ears have been raped.
And you are upset because I pointed out her lack of elocution on this particular clip? THAT for you is not just the stupidest comment here, but the "stupidest comment on youtube"?
Come back when you have something positive to add. Your negative comments do not sting at all, son.
@Rajamuttu feelin pretty fine playin guitar, kickin back with my girl smokin a j and lookin forward to my 3rd year in university. have a nice summer :)
stanzibar,I adore Patti, and Ivan Kral is a personal acquaintance of mine,ok?And I also think that comparing this to that is stupid, but check out ,for example, the song 'precious',or'kid',and if u like Patti,I can't see why you wouldn't like Chrissie. She sucked on some of her albums after james honeyman scott and pete farndon died(now, don't ask me if im kidding when i say those 2 kick ass),but pretenders first 2,even the 3rd album rule. Give it a chance, really
I have nothing against Chrissie Hynde whatsoever and I was fortunate enough to see the original Pretenders live in 1980 and 81, but there would be no Chrissie Hynde were it not for Patti. Patti blazed that trail. If you simply prefer Chrissie Hynde, that's your prerogative, but personally I find comparing apples to oranges an exercise in futility. I love early Pretenders. I love Patti more though simply because there's more there in terms of overall importance and trailblazing.
See? I'm really glad that this turned out to be a civilised chat, rather than something else.....I envy you cos u had the chance 2 see the pretenders then....well,i was born in 1975,and I'm fuckin Croatian,so what are the odds??(lol). I'm a translator,so that's where my,hopefully, good English comes from...and I've been 2 the states(Portland,OR),went there 2 school 4 a year...
I visited Croatia in 2004. Only got as far as Pula driving down from Italy, but it was astonishingly beautiful. Would love to go back and see Zagreb someday.
all of this comments are true, but for some reason, chrissie hynde,in her early pretenders days, was just a little bit above patti...well,no disrespect, but it's just me
Patti went beyond being merely punk. She was almost like a rock n roll version of Rimbaud,a female Jim Morrison.Well however you describe her she was certainly amazing.

Why wouldn't this "artist" take the time to learn basic elocution? Maybe that's why people comment on her 5th-rate Mick Jagger dance impersonation.
