Double click on a blank square in the foreground of the xsheet (not in the background) and then draw in the image window to create a new image in the position on the xsheet.
i'm trying to animate using pictures i scanned onto the computer. i have a bg image but the animated characters are superimposed into the background, meaning the background is showing through the characters. how do i stop this??
@MicahBuzan If the animated characters are part of the background image then there's nothing you can do about it. They need to be imported separately into the foreground. If they've already been colored they should be 32-bit image files (with an alpha channel) and they should be imported as overlays. If they haven't been painted yet they should be imported as line drawings and then you paint them in FlipBook and be sure to use colors that are opaque so you don't see through them.
@kentbraun hey thanks for the quick reply and helpful info.
my animation I'm doing is in black and white, does that because the backgrounds are black and white and my characters have no color, any white parts of my characters will appear transparent over the background image?
@MicahBuzan Once you paint the characters then you won't be able to see through them. You can use AutoFill to paint them all at once with just one color. Check the Help file for details on using AutoFill.
I just downloaded Digicel and I'm loving it so far but I'm not sure how to move images around. and if you showed it in this video I'm sorry D8 but my internet won't let me watch videos today just get on youtube ;u;
The explanation on how to move images around is not in the Drawing tutorial. It's in the Simple Pan tutorial. Hopefully your internet connection will improve soon and then you can watch that video.
How come i can't edit the scene properties and add more frames ? i set it to 300 i don't have the lite version but it seems i can't edit them once it's created...
I just tested it again on a PC with the latest download. It works exactly like it is supposed to. If you cut something from one cel and paste it into another it goes into the same spot and at the same size, but then you can move it and resize it to suit your needs.
Make sure you don't draw a box (before you paste it) for it to go into. That will make it do what you're seeing.
It starts under $50 during our Summer Special and goes up depending on the features you need. You can find a complete description of features and prices in our online store.
To pan the background you don't need to double-click on the background. First go to the frame where you want the pan to start. Then click on the pan icon and then click and drag the background to where you want it to be. Then go to the frame where you want the pan to stop and click on the pan icon and then click and drag the background to where you want it to be. FlipBook will then make the background move from the first place you put it to the second place you between as the scene plays.
The trial version is free. That runs with a watermark. To make scenes without the watermark you have to buy it. You don't have to have any other programs but it would be nice to have some kind of paint program, a sound program and a video editing program if you're going to do anything serious. Those are all available online for free if you're on a tight budget.
I ran into a problem though. After I start up a new scene, my intuos4 works one-to-one with the on-screen paper...but when i move the window, the calibration gets off (the cursor is on one part of the paper, but the drawing is on another part). Is there an option for this for fix this? Thanks, a reply would be appreciated
No we did not use the Lite version but 300 frames is a lot of animation. The average scene is 5 or 6 seconds long. That's less than 200 frames. You do each scene in its own file and then combine the scenes in a video editor just like they do with live action movies.
Very strange...I placed a background image to run through the whole animation. It does. I lined my art up with the background throughout the penciling process....BUT when I go to preview the animation,..the artwork is not even close to where it was during the design phase.....it's off registered...
Not so sure I'm into this app. Had to give it a try anyway.
FlipBook let's you have backgrounds that are bigger than your frame so you can pan and zoom around on them. You must have made the background bigger. You can use the camera move tools to apply a move to the background to get it to line up with your foreground.
At around 6:36 into the clip you mention that you wanted to add 6 frames to adjust the timing from frame 1. You said, "hit 6" and then it automatically drags a line to extend the timing from frame 1 to frame 7. Exactly "where" did you "hit 6"??????
I've been searching for an hour and can't figure out how to add timing! I typed in 6 and that didn't work,..I dragged the mouse down to the 7th frame and that didn't work...I hit F6 and that didn't work....where is this magic 6?
How do you draw good using a mouse. Or do you have a usb pencil pad thingy. Because Im a great artist by myself but it bothers me that I can't draw good on a computer.
Makes no sense to me, ive drawn the background, saved it as a BMP, opened the still into the BG timeline and deleted my initial back ground from time line 1. The issue is the BG image dosnt appear in the main drawing window so im unable to animate over it, someone please help me out
At 7:09. I couldn't get mine to work like his so I wasted 20 minutes retrying the process from a brand new file. Then I noticed that he had a teal frame 5 while mine was purple. Then I noticed there was a quick flash of purple when he clicked on frame 5. It turns out he is double clicking. He would do better to say double click when he is double clicking. That distinction is important. Anyone care to tell me what the colors mean?
FlipBook does not do vectors. It maintains the integrity of the pixels that were scanned in rather than converting them to a mathematical representation.
Yes, the demo is done on a PC. Apple uses all the function keys for its own purposes but I believe on a Mac you can change their functions back to normal so other applications have access to them.
@kentbraun yeah, this has never worked for me on my tablet pc either. The frame is modified box always pops up. It is aggravating. I do not understand why flipbook can't just assume what I drew is what I want and go to the next frame.
@FaultIsMine - I had the same problem. Then at 7:09 when he says to go to frame 5. He is actually double clicking on it and changing the frame color to teal (as apposed to purple). When I folow the instructions on a teal frame 5 it doesn't ask me that question and it works.
@helckler I think Adobe Flash is easy to understand and allows you to do many things. A tip is to watch tutorials to get a clue of what you could actually do and find out a bit more about how the tools work. Once you know how the tools work the main problem will probably be finding the time to make everything you want to.
Instead of asking you to fill out a form, like many software companies do, we ask you to send us an email so we have a valid email address for those that download FlipBook. That way we can let you know if there's an update or a special offer that would save you money when you're ready to buy it. We don't sell your address or share it with anyone else so it's perfectly safe.
Click on the light bulb icon in the main menu bar to turn on the light box. If the light bulb icon isn't there then someone must have removed it using the customize tool bar option. But it's easy to put it back.

Select the thumbnail in the xsheet for the image whose timing you want to change and press any number key to make that image hold for that number of frames. You can also hold the number key down it you want to keep changing the timing beyond that image.

@Riodgn
You can add more frames. That's just not where you do it.
If you're scanning, shooting or importing FlipBook will add frames automatically as needed.
You can select one or more rows and press the insert key (if your keyboard has one) or use the menus "Edit > Insert" to insert more rows.
You can also right click on a row and you'll get a dialog that will let you insert, delete or append rows.

2 questions:
1. Did you use the lite edition? 2. Is 300 frames a good start, when your animating? (12,5 sec of film, when the frames/sec is 24)

It's easy in FlipBook.
Just import your 3D in the background level of FlipBook and then add to traditional 2D in the foreground layers.
Check out the YouTube video links in our Theater. You'll see a GREAT cartoon we just added that is 2D and 3D combined.
kentbraun 1 year ago
For the timing, when you say "hit 6" you mean the key, correct? What if you need more than 9 frames (you'll have to press more than one key...)?
TheEpicBudgie 1 year ago
Right. Any number key 1-9 will make that image display for that number of frames.
Control + a number key 1-9 will let you enter a 2-digit number for holds up to 99 frames.

Sorry the double-click wasn't clear. Using FlipBook becomes second nature so quickly that it's easy to forget to mention the distinction.
When you open a cel for editing, it turns green.
When you select one or more cels in the xsheet to cut, copy or paste them, their thumbnails are highlighted in blue.
When you have additional images displayed in the light box their thumbnails are yellow.
Those are the colors that matter.
What you see as Teal is probably a combination of open and selected.
