Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as Chrono Cross. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
Hey everyone, thanks for all the feedback on the performance. For all of you citing "horrid performances," "a disgrace to music," etc, please take time to come to our Spring Concert on May 7th, 2011 in the Dekelboum Concert Hall in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at UMD. We will be performing this piece again, only this time I believe that you'll be pleasantly surprised. ;) We've been working extremely hard all semester and are looking forward to performing for all you video game fans.
@felpics Yup. Many times. I find the composition of this piece too complex to convey the original charm of Trigger's music. This problem is compounded by the composition taking more from Cross's music than Trigger's.
While I hear small things every once in a while that remind me of Trigger's music, I find it more similar to an allusion than an inclusion.
I love how some people are trying to give this orchestra credit based on the fact that they're even playing this piece.
Seriously? I might expect this crap from a beginner's high school group, but this is a University group. Even in HS, our director would never have allowed us to perform this poorly.
Why does everyone call them a high school? This is a college ensemble and this is a disgrace to the Chrono music, especially for college musicians. I'd be embarrassed at that concert. Props to the pianist though
I watch this both smiling and cringing at times but always full of joy. I certainly wish we could have even tried this at our HS 12yrs ago when I was still doodling Square music on my piano and trumpet.
This piece is difficult! And for HS kids to pull it off this well, kudos to them and the director!
Shoot for the stars! And do whatever to keep kids interested in classical music. This is what the industry is doing.
People like to hate, because it makes them feel like they're coming from a (higher) position of authority, so that hating feeds their ego (self-importance).
@CleverDjembe Not really hating here, but their performance wasn't at all as refined as it should have been. The sound balance seemed to be off (at least from what was recorded), the dynamics (volume for you non-musicians) were not as dynamic as they could have been, the intonation was off for a few of the instruments, and the rhythm was out of sync (not as noticeable).
@CleverDjembe A poor performance in my opinion for such an amazing piece. I will give them credit for having the passion to do this. I just wish they had more practice before trying to perform such a beautiful arrangement.
I would have been a bit more lenient had they actually tried the whole piece, but they cut out the parts that were "too hard", and to me, that's just a hard fail right there. Dropping parts because your players aren't skilled enough to play it merely makes it that much more obvious.
The thing that really clenched it for me, though, was the out of place symbol crash at 7:08. That was just a perfect example of how uncoordinated and badly put together this orchestra is.
I applaud the effort and I like seeing game music respected as actual performable music, but this isn't university-level performance at all (sorry Maryland). Percussion is way off, strings are abysmally out of tune, 6:10 almost made my ears bleed. It actually sounds a step below my high school wind ensemble.
The piano and flute solos were the only parts I was happy with throughout the entire performance.
Also, I am glad that game music is being recognized unlike it has been in the past, seeing as I am a very big game enthusiast; especially a good RPG such as Chrono Cross.
They butchered nearly every part of this song! I don't agree, I wouldn't even expect this from a high school orchestra; more like an elementary orchestra. It was just plain sad. The instruments were constantly out of tune, out of place, or completely wrong. I found myself cringing several times throughout this piece at how badly they butchered it.
you know, you are really mean about alot of these comments. do you know what it takes to be able to play something like this? or the amount of practice required by everyone to do so? i would love to see any of you, get a group of people, proffesionals or not, to get together and make something sound this good. they are gamers, and are proud to play some of the most original music out there. i give em kudos.
And, actually, yes, yes I do know what it takes. I've played in bands since I was in sixth grade and played Piano since second.
I was chosen out of the entire nation to go to CUC two years back for their music festival. There were 4 tubas chosen from the entire US, and I was among them. We were in a huge ORCHESTRA, therefore, I have firsthand experience. I know what it's like to do something like this, and the amount of work it takes, but this was just horrible.
I do, I've played music for 16 years, 5 instruments to be exact, and this is awful. I've played in middle school bands with better tone and timing than this group, and I'm not even kidding in the slightest.
Kudos are given, but musicians should also know their limitations and how difficult a piece will be to play. A good musician can not only tackle a good challenge, but know when to step away from one, too.
They did pretty good. Of course it'll need improvement, but for a university, it was very well performed. None the less, I enjoyed it, and that's all that matter to me.
The lead ups - piano for CT, flute & guitar for CC - were good, the full orchestra pieces were pretty awful. The strings were out of tune and out of sync most of the time. Some of the harder measures were simplified/skipped/ignored by the strings which really hurts the flow.
They may be amateurs but I have to say that this is more of what I'd expect out of a highschool orchestra rather than a college one. Add in that there are professional orchestras to compare to and you've got it rough.
this is NOT a real university orchestra. these are NON-MUSIC MAJORS from the University of Maryland, and this in no way reflects the quality of ensemble at the University of Maryland School of Music. This ensemble is not sponsored or affiliated with the UM School of Music in any way.
I was kinda dissapointed after hearing what you guys did with the songs from Secret of Mana, but I decided to listen to this, and I must say this one really sounds awesome. Congrats!
All you asshole that diss on this concert should all die and go 2 hell! I'll kill to get to play in a band that play video game musics from all my favorite game! <3 you chrono cross <=*-/
wow, this is so unfaithful to the original. Why have so many notes changed? The melodies are almost completely different in places. The piano in the beginning was excellent. Hasn't anyone heard of a TUNER???????
lol i was listening to this while browsing the web and I thought it was really good. pianist is amazing. the instant i heard the violins I litterally said out loud "middle school orchestra"
Honestly, to gather a group of musicians who play classical instruments to video game music.... that's just incredible enough by itself! I would definitely join that symphony if I had the chance.
I realize they are amateurs compared to the professional syphony orchestras.... but I had to stop watching not even half way through because of all the out of tune notes and mistakes. Good attempt but you need more practice.
My greatest dream = to have orchestrated VGM played in schools. Now, I can die a happy man.

@nintendofan133 Or they're being objective, if it a little overcritical. You can't deny that there are several very out of tune areas.

MavsFan1982 2 years ago
seriously, they did decently. It must've took a helluva lot of guts to perform something like this... :)
MavsFan1982 2 years ago
They were doing decent until 6:06 , just a few tuning problems. But after the lead-in it seems they're unpracticed.
For a high school orchestra I've definitely heard worse, so I don't see why there's so much hate in these comments.
