What? Prof. Poliakoff is WRONG......Gallium is the first element (after hydrogen) on the P.T. to be named for a country: France, which used to be called Gaul.
I use germanium transistors in electronic projects, there are about 80 of them in my mixing desk which i sit at regularly!..Are they radioactive as I have heard that germanium is 'slightly' radioactive??! Are there any health risks being exposed to germanium transistors?
@r2studios Since it is usually considered a stable element, I'd guess that the radioactivity is minimal, as with bismuth. Don't bother thinking too much about it.
How about, buy a gold ring but get germanium and americium chunks the sizes of medium large diamonds have them set to the ring, the americium alpha radiation will be blocked by the gold and the gamma will me so small as to have less effect than background radiation. Ask a scientist to be sure.
The elements can be so cruel.. I am german any my girl is from the US and I wanted our wedding rings to show this. I wanted them to be half Germanium and half Americium.. unfortunately Americium is radioactive as an element 1 above Plutonium... now I'm broken. Any ideas? Golden rings are too normal for us..
i dont know what you all are talking about, but germanium(which are 2 factorys in the world that make it and there both in japan and only 1 sells it to the public) is a life saving element that cures cancer and the only guy who has a patten on it from that japan factory is karl loren vibrant life.
For sure! We also call Francium Frankreichium. Not really! Some elements like Tungsten have german names. Its called Wolfram. But hey, its just a piece of metal. Search for "Periodensystem" and you will find all the answers!
It's not the first element in the periodic table named after country. It's preceded by gallium which is named after France, and there is also scandium of course, way before these two; its name is not for the country but rather for the region, but I think it counts.
if i have understood the professor correctly (maybe i havn't), then germanium will reflect ordernary light like a mirror, but infra-red light will pass right through, making it look transparent (invisible)
god damn this guy is fucking stupid.
What a fucking worthlesss bag of shit.
He must have got his degree in Zimbabwe.

7.4 percent of germanium contains isotope 76Ge which has a half-life of 1760000000000000000000 years. No fucking worries.

I know that germanium transistors are quite popular for use in fuzz pedals for electric guitars.
