He just couldn't sing in anything but Italian, could he? This is the first time I have even HEARD him singing something outside the Italian opera/song repetoire, and he doesn't even do it in French. So good, but I would have loved to hear him do a Faust, or a Pearlfishers, in French. He isn't really suited for German music, so that's unrealistic, but he could have sung something like Faust.
Pavarotti recorded a Guillaume Tell in the lates 70's. He also recorded a Werther and often sang in french : "Pourquoi me réveiller", "Oh Paradis" (Meyerbeer), or "La Fleur que tu m'avais jetée" (Bizet's Carmen). But he had difficulties to sing french without accent indeed...
You are right : he would have been great in Bizet's Faust
Wonderful interpretation of this difficult aria. Luciano Pavarotti was in his late 50s and had very sharp high C's. This aria is an excerpt from Massenet's Manon, which is very beautiful in french too.
I thought I wanted to understand why some people dislike Pavarotti so much, but who cares when the world knows that he was is and will be the KING of the HIGH Cs!
Although Tito was an excellent tenor, he can not approach Luciano Pavarotti's upper register that, perhaps, is the best of all times....Viva Luciano!!!
why, WHY, do they sing arias in different language than the original? I hate it. If you can't sing it in the original laguage, then don't sing it at all.
5 STARS!!!!! AMAZINGSISSIMO!!!!

When we hear for example J.D. FLores in the same Aria, we measure how perfect Pavarotti's technique was.
Luciano had that inimitable sharp steel sword in the voice !

AMAZING at 59 years old. He defied nature. Without a doubt, the greatest tenor of all time.
And yes, his upper register is untouchable by any human. Loved forever.

Not quite true. He was great but Corelli had a better top. But, Pav was better at 59 than Corelli was.

tdeane34, that is your opinion. I don't visit these sites to analyze or pick certain tenors apart - only to admire the Tenor God.
And he is that, to me.

The secret - vocalizing every day, singing the right repertorio, and have a God's given talent.
Bravo!

The secret is one focused register, with really high placement.

He sings it in Italian because he is horrible in French. Tito Schipa sang this aria best anyways, and yes in Italian too.

At least he doesn't crack the notes 3 times like Rolando Villazon. No matter what language he is the best tenor ever!!! My hero!

Besides that, the singing is great :-)
