You don't know a lot. That is a beam trawler, and the arms that you are tlking about are for the trawl gear, definately not counter-ballancing "flopper-stoppers"
ga zo mee,heeerlijk,fantastisch,krijgt klappen omdat ie een beetje dwarszees vaart ,kop in de golven ,alleen maar springen,maar hangt af v/d koers.. ,mart.
all trawlers go through this weather as they travel about doh!! obviously you haven't been on a trip at sea or you would know!! it's not uncommon to have the men talk about forty foot waves in storm force 11.
drummadai, our trawlers regularly go up to scotland - aberdeen i think. If you knew anything bout fishing trawlers you would know this. bet you've never even been to sea!!!!! Most trawlers put up with storm force 11, forty foot waves etc. as they travel about, looking for fish don't they! Doh!
their called outriggers, they spread weight out and slow the roll of the boat down but will make it roll just a little bit more unless the birds(stabilizers, big weighted triangular pieces of metal that hang in the water off the tips of the outriggers) are in the water. the birds drastically reduce rolling and the popping action of the bow in rough seas.
yeh its 4:1.She isnt aloud any more power than what she has because of her liscence. She could do nearly 10 knots in good seas when steaming but when she had heavy matts on she would struggle on soft ground, especially off Dungeness.
shes a great beamer to work on and she has nice lines. she was built by Padmos but was constructed in Haak shipyard but not in Stellendam.The only problem with her, fishing wise was that she didnt have alot of power. only about 280 hp sp she struggled to tow in strong tides and silty seabeds.
I trawled out of Lowestoft in the '60's, I also sailed in an underpowered boat the 'Loch laoi' built 1946 - hard to make money out of her. She was about the same LOA as this one.
The fishermen aren't the reason the fish is expensive. They getz the rough end of the stick all round. Having said that, I was on trawlers for 5 years and that there what you watch is considered fun by me. I love it!
I have an angling boat in Brixham and i know how rough the seas can be.I always thought fish was expensive until i spent a night on a Brixham trawler.I have also been in brixam when men have been lost at sea.I have also been there when two seamen have fallen from the quayside into boats while unloading fish and died from theire injuries.I have the utmost respect for fishermen.Dont ever tell me fish is expensive.
Nice video. I used to work on this boat when she was owned by Leach Fishing in Shoreham. She was called Charlotte Nancy back then. My dad skipperd her for 4 years. Its nice to see what she looks like rolling around but she can manage much bigger seas than whats in this video. I can vouch for that lol.
Is that near Berry Head, near Brixham, Devon ? Having visited Berry Head and more recently Point Du Raz Finistere, France, I'd say, on average, the wind at Berry Head was worse !
''Flopper Stoppers?''-sounds like a name for a bra! {or underpants?!}

looks a Brave little trawler, like she is saying ''I may be small, but I can do it!''-like a Jack Russell terrier-determined and feisty.

I'm sure I seen this fishing out of shoreham for scallops a while back when I was crew down there.

Does holding the beams out like that make them less prone to rolling?

looks like fun!! Im surprised its under powered like that, looks like it was moving right along in those seas. what does it have for a gear? 4:1?
