Russia and the EU possibly joining up, China already has an Asian union, England staying out of the EU, USA, Canada & Mexico with the SPP... Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia are being set up under our noses... the African union however doesn't fit into this - maybe a new contender? It's doesn't really matter if Perestroika and Glasnost were impoused or not: everyone already had open discussions about corruption, propaganda, and mediocracy on the kitchens among people. Economy was in devastating state. Gorbachev was desparate to get US loans and have foreign capital inflow to the country. Society was shuttered.

At the beginning of the 20th century the indian population in north america was about 500 000 people. And remember that in some areas 90% of indians were wiped out. While there were pre-Columbian North American civilizations that had fairly large populations, almost all of these went the way of the Mayans by the time Columbus showed up. The only remaining civilizations was the Iroquois. Add smallpox and other kinds of plagues to the mix, and the Native American population did not fair well.
I'm not saying the settlers didn't have blood on their hands, but it was nothing like what the Russians did.

Gorbachov was the biggest traitor in Russian history. Although, that said, he did not know what consequences of his actions, so he was more of an unwilling traitor. Like modern democrats, he just threw stuff at the wall to see what sticks. If Gorbachov was never in power and instead a traditional Communist, then I do think the biggest issue were to be solved. The second issue is Germany, because if a revolution starts, it can spread. If you fix those two - it would have survived for sure.
