You don't just press starter button, but you need to press it while keys are in bike BUT you must activate kill-switch so bike won't start.Aim is to make pistons turn couple cycles, by using alternator so engine can pump all the oil stuck inside of an engine block.
Your supposed to crank the engine a few times, NOT hit the starter without the key on, this will get the oil trapped on the cyclinder walls into the pan. So turn the key on kill switch off and hit the starter button a few times,
Want to do the easiest oil change EVER? Want a bike that needs NO valve adjustments, ever? Or a bike that needs nothing for 50K miles and would smoke ANY new 250 4 stroke? Get a 1980 Suzuki GT 250 or Yamaha RD 250, they will hit over 100 mph, get 55 mpg and run low 15's in the 1/4 mile. Only on a 2 stroke street bike.
Thanks! This video helped me. I just picked up a Honda 250 Nighthawk. It was set up the same way as your Honda Rebel. I changed out the old oil for fresh oil! Seems to ride better already. The other comments regarding the on/off switch and getting more oil out of the engine was also helpful!

Hey i just got my 05' honda rebel 250, and it needs to be serviced but overall its in good condition. what other fluids do i need to change like brake fluids, oil change, chaine lubrication, what else? anything on the handle bars? and is it easy to do bymyself or should i just get a mechanic to do it.
Thanks. Could use better communications explaining each step but overall quite useful. I suggest a better sequence. Start by explaining what tools ate needed and slowly walking through each task. Thanks for taking your time to help others.
@joegolf68: Thanks for the feedback. Had I wanted to do this in a more professional manner, I could have done that but this was rather spur of the moment, "Hey, I'm going to go ahead and record this real fast while I'm doing it." I'll keep it in mind for future topics though. :)
My girlfriend has a Rebel 250. We are going to do oil changes on all 3 of our bikes and I had never done one on hers so I wanted to look it up before I did it. The first time I changed oil on my sportster I drained the primary instead of the motor oil. So.... This time I looked it up first before doing her bike. This video was simple and nicely done thanks!
BTW, you can find an M12-1.50 x25mm bolt that fits the oil plug at O'Reilly's, 2 for about $2 on their bolt display. Its about 5-10mm too long, but the size and threads fit. Was the only place I could find a match, Lowes, HQ, and Autozone had zip. It sticks out 5mm, but it got me home; you could cut off 5mm or find a 15mm or 20mm version, or buy one from a Honda place to keep on your bike as a spare and/or do a cotter pin hole modification to.
Cotter Pin - that was the word I was looking for. This!@#$% oil pan bolt needs a cotter pin in it to keep it from spinning out on its own. Even a super heavy duty thick paperclip would do, slid through a small hole you drill yourself from one side of the head to the other, and then bent at both ends and in a way to bump the engine case and keep it from twisting out . I don't even know where I am going to begin to disassemble this bike, get an FSM and clear out a huge space in a barn.
The thing is, I tightened that oil pan bolt in there tight, while the engine was hot, and it came out in 25 miles. Searching the net for 'oil pan belt fell out" you find ALOT of this, screwing up engines. Major engine design flaw on ALL engines, not having a lock key on these bolts to keep them from unscrewing themselves from vibration. Get under there, take your oil pan bolt off, drill a tiny hole sideways through the head and run metal wire through there and twisted around something else
I just did an oil change on my Honda Rebel after a long trip (it was about that time), and on Jackson Rd in Augusta had the oil plug fall out, and drove it 2 miles before hearing a noise and immediatly turning off engine. Got a new bolt, refilled, got me home, but now the engine smokes on one side. I RECOMMEND to everyone care a spare M12-1.50 x20mm bolt, AND drill a small hole through head of oil pan bolt so you can wire it never to fall out! Now I got to rebuild engine & I have no idea how
U could mention the size of the drain plug,. Is it 12, 13, 14 /////..Well
Also I think most poeple can do a stright up oil change. It would have been better if you showed the extended screen cleaning procedure too which involves removal of few more bolts and covers. Overall thanks though cuz at least you took inititive and provided useful info. THanks
HI there, bought a cb250 similar engine design. The manual states that upon draining the engine holds 1.5ltr -1.6 quarts, it also states that upon dissasembly it will hold 1.8 ltr -1.9 quarts. Does this mean that when im changing the oil that I simply use 1.5 ltr? Does it mean that the 0.3quart difference there is held in the engine when you change the oil? The guy on this vid says use 1.6qt-1.8 but i dont want to use too much.
why? there are a lot of people riding their bikes and thinking that only a qualified mechanic can change oil, spark plugs and so on. may be this vid helps hundreds to start thinking another way.
great vid. krymsonwulf had it right about the ignition on and kill switch off helps pump the oil out when you tap the starter. Also a new crush washer I believe its a 12mm needs to be replaced with every oil change. (like $1.50 from any motorcycle svc dep)
hey man, i noticed on your interstate vid that you got your rebel up to 80 and beyond...do you have a video on here to explain how to remove the governor and increase speed potential? i have a 2002 rebel 250 and i cant get more than 70 on my bike. i really appreciate your videos. keep it up.
Thanks for the video! I found it much easier to access the drain bolt with a regular 17mm wrench from underneath than a socket wrench+extension from the side.
Dude, if you turn the red switch above the starter botton to the off position you can then turn the key switch on and push the starter button to turn the engine without making it run. This will help get all the oil out of the engine. Don't crank it very long, just a few turns.
i just subscribed to you mr. skel3tor because my classes are next week and as soon as i get my license i will be getting a Honda Rebel 250. thanks for your vids.
When they tell you to push the starter button in the manual, they mean turn the key on, make sure the run switch is in the OFF position so the engine doesn't start, then hit the start button for a second or 2. Just clicking the button isn't gonna drain any excess oil.
Thanks for taking the trouble to make this procedure available to all. One would think, "How hard could this be?" But you've answered some very basic questions, and covered the subject so well that it becomes even easier than it was before... I followed your instructions to the letter, I knew everything was jake...
Someone please tell me how pushing a button that has 0 power to it is going to do anything. You must turn the engine over so the key/ power will be on. Also warm up the bike and just let it drain until it drips. 40 minutes it about 30 minutes longer than it takes to finish changing the oil completly.
You don't want to start the bike, but you do want to turn the engine over 2-3 times to purge the oil lines. Simply pushing the button without the power on does nothing.
michinstant: There is no oil filter in the Twinstar-series motors, only an oil screen located on the bottom of the oil pump that just sits in the sump. General service is required every 7,000 miles, a simple flush of the screen and inspection of the pump, the only hard part is that you have to remove the entire right side of your motor to get at it. Kick-start and all if so-equipped.
This was great - this empowers me to change my oil tomorrow. The one thing mising is the oil filter. And how often you change the oil versus the oil filter. I liked the way you showed the bolt.
my dad told me its actually not a good idea to turn the motor over (in cars) to get the last bit of oil out of the oil pump... one, there's not very much, and two, you never want it to be stuck spinning in air not pumping oil- otherwise, great video - paid $500 for my rebel
There's no bike shops near me, but Advanced Auto Parts sells quarts of "SAE 10W-40 For Air-Cooled 4-Stroke Engines" All the numbers check out, but the word Motorcycle doesn't appear anywhere on the bottle.
I think the idea is to push the starter with the engine button on off mode...so the start engine turns once or twice..if not the pushing of that button has no effect...
You will probably have a filter. I would not go with the specifications in my video. Please consult your owners manual or pick up a clymers service manual for your bike for the information you seek.
Just got my first Honda rebel, do u recommended that clymer service manual?
