Don't forget that African Americans created the space for the Africans to inhabit. I don't care who learns the dances and rhythms. I do care that the struggle of African Americans who insisted upon the validity of African dance seems to have been ignored and or minimized.
People its 2010 WAKE UP Realize ONE SPIRIT animates all the body mind mechanisms and all trbal racial boudaries are fast disoolving
In spirit all is possible and everyone form every culture can do anything.
Free yourself from your false identification with your body/tribe etc and EXPRESS yourself in any way you want ITS FUSION TIME now Take what you want from any of the old world cultures and fuse it with whaever yoiu want and come up with your own unique expression WAY TO GO
People need to understand that the African American experience is painfully unique. There are so many examples of black culture being co-opted by whites to their benefit and our detriment.(Can you say Elvis?)The positions expressed by n2destiny & zenzuela comes from that experience. We have been reunited with what was stolen from us & as a result guard it jealously. That's why we react so negatively to white african dance companies. The wounds are still to raw.
Dancing is not about looking good. It is the feelings while you dance that are important. And i'm sure these dancers are just as enchanted by the drums as i get when i see this video :)
Well to me its more than just the dance but the spirit thats in the dance.......white people can learn all they want and thats cool but they will never capture the spirit of the African Dance African Drumming.....im not a racist im a realist i love all people but thats just truth...Any Ethnic dance i believe its more natural to people of color than white people.I wonder if thats why white people are drawn to other cultures because they dont have a culture??
i must respectfully say that you really have NO idea what you're talking about. there are SO many flaws in your statement i can't get into now, but i'll say this: i've been to africa numerous times and seen africans who can't dance to save their lives. i've seen numerous white people who can out-dance (and out-drum!) africans. you really need to think about what you're saying, not make generalizations, and learn more. good luck.
hmmm okay first off you cant say i have no idea what im talking about..and by you saying all that you TOTALLY dont understand what i said.... okay there are white people that can out drum--out dance but im talking about the spirit of it African Dance what has been pass down from age to age!! that cant be taught..that can have the form all day long but it still doesnt have the affect when its done with the spirit of which these dances are founded on...
which lead me to my next question that you didnt comment on do white people have culture? me and my white friends talk about this all the time they cant answer......so next time you want to comment on something give more detail please..hope your learning more as well...
Obviously there is still some animosity among the drum and dance community. It should be a celebration of a beautiful culture, (That of West Africa!) Who is to say who can or can not honor that culture, share it, learn about it, or perform traditional drum ensembles or dances? All of my friends from Guinea, Mali, Senegal in the U.S. are happy to share their culture and music with any willing students who have good intentions and a sincere desire to learn the music and dance.
Thats kinda like being alil prejudice dont ya think? Who said they are taking what is ours? thats like sayin we(afrcian americans) cant adapt to different lifestyles. sorta say. so if dey want to try something let em try without being bashed for tryin a new thing aight
Dancing isn't a black thing or a white thing it's about expressing joy and happiness in a world full of tragedy and hate. When there so many wars and stuff it's good to reach your soul via music, after all theres really only one race- the human race.
you all must not be black lol you can't see that they are serious culture bandits? adjust your mentality and understand what is really going on this is not their culture there is no reason why we should pat them on the back for trying to claim what is ours
In my West African group I have a whit boy in it and i can garuntee he wud out drum anyone in ya group. Just because we are known as West African drum orchestra we welcome all races and genders to dance or drum but dat one dude on da rite does seem to be slackin alil but anyways u get my point
they are terrible my group from tha chi is much better and we are black and African these white women are off beat anyway they are physically unable to feel African music i don't give a fuck how long they've been doing it
Yeah! Actually one of my teachers is this Serb who sounds just like Abdoul Doumbia when you close your eyes! :)
The last time Mamady Keita came to Toronto, he brought an apprentice with him - a white boy named Billy who he refers to as Billy Keita because of his dedication and attitude and respectfulness.
@pidza21 Skin color does not have anything to do with it and there is nothing wrong with learning. It just so happens that African people have darker pigmented skin and this attribute is closely related to creativity. THIS IS African dance the dance of the Afrikan people and that should always be credited
These girls are workin their butts off! Don't hate. The offbeat feeling could be due to the sometimes out-of-sync audio on youtube clips. Or, then again, maybe it's just your out-of-sync mentality that is affecting your enjoyment of this wonderful performance.
that guy said, his group is better and they are black? are the ppl in this video not black?I mean i cant really tell what they are?Anyone know?anyways I liked it-
Are these the same dancers that danced in the Ballet Wassa-Wassa clip. The outfits are exactly the same. The drumming and dancing were nice. The dancers danced with energy

Don't forget that Africans have brought this culture to us and started to teach us. So with all respect to them and all those who love this music.
Please, look at the other video from that group playing with Bolokada Conde ... Good job guys :)
