Generally, as adults they are quite hard to tame. I have no idea how he got so tame. All of a sudden within two days he just started giving me kisses and flying to my shoulder. Very strange... but I'm certainly not complaining!
Of course, you can raise them from babies if you can find a breeder that has unweaned babies and is willing to show you how to hand feed them. The original Spoggy the Sparrow was raised from a baby. If you haven't already, check out the links of him to the right. :)
The only wild birds you are allowed to keep in the US - as far as I know - are House Sparrows, Starlings, and Pigeons, because they are all invasive species. All others are illegal, I'm pretty sure. So you can't sell them.
As Kid i saved a sick Wildlife Bird (Blackbird). When i was searching Worm`s for him then he was following me from 4th Floor down to the Ground and watched me digging Worm`s.So he learned flying back. And now he is back in Wildlife...
Just popping in to see how Spoggy the Java was doing and to give him a WINGWAVE from Spoggy in Tasmania. I can see our dear friend Javakogan has been here and given you some excellent advice :-) I will add, I am sure you know this, but it may help someone else reading this, please never give advocado to your bird. It is toxic for them. Spoggy has access to baths every day but he will still do some 'air bathing' sometimes. They use their beak to get oil from their preening gland to freshen up :-)
Best wishes for your new Java. I would like to mention that Spoggy would appreciate having another Java for company. Also, it is great that you allow him freedom, and cuddle and groom him (rub his head feathers and cheeks). They love that. If you have a cat, please be careful. Don't forget to give him fresh, washed vegetables such as Romaine lettuce, and fruits such as apple. Thank you for sharing! I am a Spoggy fan, too.
Another essential I noticed is that they need frequent baths, otherwise they'll give themselves "air baths" if they have no water, and their feathers look ratty. That's something I hadn't done but now that I do, he looks and acts much better. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why he kept fluffing himself and rattling his wing feathers, until I learned this. Now, he's much happier. He loves romaine and kiwi fruit. I want another Java. For now he hangs out with my keets and quail.
How kind of you to drop in and say Hi to Spoggy no 2 - love and light to you from your friend in Tasmania - we have a heatwave going on here just now! Very early this year. Lucky our old farmhouse is nice and cool but the baby swallows who have a nest above our front door are panting in the afternoon heat, though we have done all we can to cool down the area, they will fledge in about 5 days time - :-) Spring is sure here, baby birds everywhere and so far NO rescues :-) (waving from Australia)
Oh that is an adorable bird - and the first bird in the world (that we know of) that has been named after our precious, cheeky little Spoggy the sparrow - I think you have a fantastic birdie there and it's great it is now becoming so tame!!! - I have approved this as a video response - 5 stars - with love from Susan, David and Spoggy (wingwave from spoggy to spoggy across the seas) :-)
Soggy is lovely!

Wow that's amazing! I never thought finches could be that tame! I always imagined them to be skittish and shy. Very pretty bird you have there :)

can you actually buy wild birds?
netnerd5 2 years ago
It depends on where you live. Java Finches are not wild in the US, where I am. So you can buy these here.

Yes, he still does his 'air bathing', and no certainly no avocados! :0)
Thanks for coming back and visiting. I only have a webcam on my pc, or I'd take more pics of his antics flying about.

Spoggy II wingwaves to Spoggy from the upper hemisphere to the lower, where it's probably starting to getting warm, I'd imagine!
It's an honor to have Spoggy II ... lol.
No other sparrow or finch compares to your lil' Spoggy! He's the darn cutest I've ever seen. And his chirps are adorable. :-)
