I mean did you want her to still have the same hair, same clothes, same naivety and sing the same notes today as she did more than 10 years ago...that would only make her boring. And we know she is far from it...

Personally, I prefer Mariah's 'old' voice. Aka, Emotions, MTV Unplugged, Music Box and Merry Christmas era. I think she can still sing today, but there's just something missing from her voice. It just doesn't sound this smooth and velvety anymore. Saying that, I do think her songs are slightly better (eg. We Belong Together, Joyride, I Wish You Knew, Migrate etc).

lovw this song. and actually she didn't really change her mucis. she just started going back to her roots which are R&B and Hip-hop, not pop. the label just wanted her to do pop ballads all the time. So really that "old Mariah" was just a robot of the label. i love her then and even more now. if you still listen to her albums now days you will see that her lyrics are even more complex, emotional, and meaningful than before...have a nice day. and she's a contralto.

By far one of the best Last 30 seconds of any ballad in pop music. If you have any idea what music is and how hard it is to produce masterpieces like this. Then you can appreciate the last 30 -45 seconds of this song. Not only does Carey hold her own in this ballad but the producer, Walter Afanasieff shows his superb musical abilities here. Just listen and enjoy the song. The video is pretty bad but hey we can't all be perfect.

I think of my father when i listen to this song. After 24 years my mom decides to walk out on all of us, and now a year later hes still heartbroken. Mariah writes and sings with such so much passion that no other artist can achieve as much as she did in her career to date.

Compare how she sings now to back when she sang songs like "vision of love," "Music Box" etc.
@jamelot true This is common for coloratura sopranos. They can sing high and powerful over large orchestras and the like, but they have to rest and take care of their voices or it will deteriorate. It deteriorates slightly anyway over decades,but it deteriorates rapidly when overworked. Mariah should tour but take breaks in between. She's been working herself like a race horse.

@jamelot she can still hit them its just that she cant hit them like she use to she did great doing emotions in atlantic city this year i went to her tour. yes her age is a difference but people forget she has nodules. If you watch her live performance of yours from 03 today show thats the last of her chest voice. Watch it on youtube. As she ages her nodules become harder so thats another reason why her voice diminished.But tell me how you feel after you watch that video. her voice need rest
@aero398 I just watched it. She sounded really good. I see that it is a combination of reasons as to why her voice isn't what it used to be today. (sigh) Mariah's voice is going, Whitney's is almost gone it seems. Oh well, at least we still have Celine right?lol. Mariah performance of Emotions this year atlantic city she nailed it and those notes she just needs rest. and im young lol haha i sing myself and her songs stay in love, and its a wrap it her voice might sound different but its very hard to change octaves and notes every 5 seconds in those songs like she does my vocal coach told me i couldnt handle it.

Hopefully the producers of today will crash and burn soon like "the dream", "swiss beats" "jayz" "will.I.aint" and so forth so that the next set will hopefully come in and get things back right. By far one of the best Last 30 seconds of any ballad in pop music. If you have any idea what music is and how hard it is to produce masterpieces like this. Then you can appreciate the last 30 -45 seconds of this song. Not only does Carey hold her own in this ballad but the producer, Walter Afanasieff shows his superb musical abilities here. Just listen and enjoy the song. The video is pretty bad but hey we can't all be perfect.

I think of my father when i listen to this song. After 24 years my mom decides to walk out on all of us, and now a year later hes still heartbroken. Mariah writes and sings with such so much passion that no other artist can achieve as much as she did in her career to date.

@aero398 I agree she can still hit the whistle most definitely, but it seems like that is all she can do nowadays because most of her songs nowadays are really high pitched almost like alvin and the chipmunks. Compare how she sings now to back when she sang songs like "vision of love," "Music Box" etc.

@jamelot true This is common for coloratura sopranos. They can sing high and powerful over large orchestras and the like, but they have to rest and take care of their voices or it will deteriorate. It deteriorates slightly anyway over decades,but it deteriorates rapidly when overworked. Mariah should tour but take breaks in between. She's been working herself like a race horse.

@aero398 she is an ALTO SOPRANO not a COLORATURA.... But she has ability to cover the range of a COLORATURA SOPRANO... ALTO -the one who sing deep, mid and low range... COLO.. -singing high.. she's amazing..

@jamelot she can still hit them its just that she cant hit them like she use to she did great doing emotions in atlantic city this year i went to her tour. yes her age is a difference but people forget she has nodules. If you watch her live performance of yours from 03 today show thats the last of her chest voice. Watch it on youtube. As she ages her nodules become harder so thats another reason why her voice diminished.But tell me how you feel after you watch that video. her voice need rest

@aero398 I just watched it. She sounded really good. I see that it is a combination of reasons as to why her voice isn't what it used to be today. (sigh) Mariah's voice is going, Whitney's is almost gone it seems. Oh well, at least we still have Celine right?lol. Celine just needs to bring out some really good albums now. i don't like any of her albums after the "Lets talk about love" album.

@jamelot I dont think its going but its damaged. No whitney just straight killed her voice its never coming back. Mariah performance of Emotions this year atlantic city she nailed it and those notes she just needs rest. and im young lol haha i sing myself and her songs stay in love, and its a wrap it her voice might sound different but its very hard to change octaves and notes every 5 seconds in those songs like she does my vocal coach told me i couldnt handle it.
