@loonytunescrazy No. Rocket Rods was put on the Peoplemover track. Peoplemover was a slow and relaxing way to see Tomorrowland and to get off the hot blacktop and rest your feet. Saldy the old peoplemover/ rocket rod track sits and rots away at the park today
It's not as simple as getting a new track. The old track which was once used for the People Mover was not designed for the speed and fast-paced nature of Rocket Rods, and so the track basically burned/wore out. Because of new OSHA standards, a new track can't be installed without having ugly ladders hanging down from the track every certain amount of feet. Not to mention it would be EXPENSIVE to tear it down and put a new one up. It will, however, be torn down in the next few years permanently.
They should probably consider either reopening the PeopleMover to it's former glory or tear the tracks down. Now that Carsland and Radiator Springs Racer is opening next year, they have no need for a hight speed car ride like Rocket Rods was in Disneyland.
I was so young when I went on this ride that I forgot how much it really did have to slow down to make those tight corners. They really should put the money into installing a proper track and reopen the Rocket Rods because it was fun - and with a proper track it could achieve speed that could rival Space Mountain. Rival...but not top it :)
I remember when this first opened, some other kid at my school had been on it and was telling everyone how awesome this "99-mile-an-hour" ride was. So my dad I and I went in the middle of the week one time, and the wait was still an hour. To an eight-year-old, going 35 on the rocket rods might as well been 99. If I hadn't grown up with it, I'd probably think it's crap (it is), but it's endearing crap.
I hate that the tracks have been empty for so many years. It brings down the park visually because it really looks like there's supposed to be something there and they did a really terrible job of covering it up.
@Imagineer5986 IF they pute this in WDW in Florida then the TTA will be gone forever, because the rocket rode broke the track off the ramp support and wear out the track, the same could happen on the TTA Track at WDW
@secretname1000able I know where Test Track is. The guy I was replying to said this should be at WDW, so I asked why WDW would ever need one "because WDW already has Test Track and Space Mountain," Sorry for the confusion.
I was at Disneyland in 1954 soon after it opened. The monorail was one of the first rides. There was no People Mover. They didn't install that until a few years later. I believe 1959 or so, if I recall. I rode the Rocket Rods in 2000 and about 2 minutes into the ride we stopped dead high above Tomorrowland. We sat there for about 5 minutes while everyone below us looked up at us. Suddenly we started up again. . The ride wasn't fast on the whole route, it slowed way down on the curves.
You really have to admire the stupidity of the Disneyland engineers for installing such a high-speed ride on a preexisting track meant for a slower, more leisurely tram.
It was a great concept that was horribly mishandled.
@777christianboy Disney California Adventure is getting Cars Land and their ride will be similar to Test track accept you be in lightning Mcqueen instead of the GM cars. and speeding down the radiator springs race tracks
Well, no. The thing is the structure doesn't follow modern building codes now. If Rocket Rods was still running, I think it could be grandfathered in. But the track was never meant for that kind of speed, and it's fatigued. It's literally framed out of wood. George Kilogridis said If a new attraction were to be built now, there would have to be stairs at regular intervals, railings, enclosed vehicles, and all sorts of additional things. They'd probably have to tear it down now. :/
@sideslide23 The PM tracks have been abandoned for almost 11 years with hardly any maintanance. Same goes for the AO platform. It would take major rebuilding to bring back a ride on the tracks. The Monorail track has survived since it is constantly maintained and given routine checks. If there's a crack it will be fixed. The PM track doesn't get that knd of attention. Cast Members may clean it from time to time, but cleaning something doesn't fix any cracks or weakened concrete/steel.
@Costerguy1234556 I never ridden rocket rod at all I've ridden the People mover, I would love to met the designer of rocket Rods once in my life time so I can punch him in his freaking Face.
@Themdcpro Wrong. They weren't removed for those reasons. The PM closed because that's where they wanted to put Rocket Rods. Rocket Rods closed because the track wasn't meant for high speeds and they weren't banked so they had to close them down to save money. No one ever jumped out on Rocket Rods. People did jump out on the PM but they added bars around the vehicles and it successfully stopped guests from jumping out.
if they put the peoble mover back in, they should install Patio Cover over the tracks, and use Newer Cars like the have at the TTA Transit Authority at Walt Disney World. last year when I went to WDW I've ridden the TTA and its like riding in a Limo around Tomarrowland
@beatledude64 It's going to be later than that before anything will be put up into place. The earliest they will put anything there would most likely be 2014.
@Costerguy1234556 AFter they get Star Tour 2 going there going to pute a people mover and a video movie on the wall tunnel screen of the newer Tron, and when thats is done the Astro Oribiter will be moved ont he roof top of the people mover station Like where the rocket jet was.
@sideslide23 Wrong. The tracks will most likely be torn down due to what Rocket Rods did to it. The Tron ride will most likely open in 2014 where Innoventions is now and won't be on the PM. It's impossible for AO to go on the platform. When TL98' was being built it was going to go on the platform but it's design proved to be too heavy so it was put on the ground at the entrance. AO would need a lighter design, but also after 10 years of being abandoned the platform is too weak.
Thanks for sharing so was this like a rollercoser

@TheCrazyCoasterKid Test Track is located across the country from where this was, this was at the Disneyland resort, not Disney World.
