The reason why the batsmen thought the ball would go across the stumps was that the ball was initially not in line with the middle stump. Instead it was headed for the off stump, before the significant drift that swayed the ball into the batsmen right before pitching.

To play spin it is not possible that it will pitch and turn on one particular direction.

In this video, it shows that batsman need to figure out by looking at the ball movement and has to be sharp enough to pick the length consistently. But here, Adam Hollioake was feeling the pressure and he couldn't last long.

The reason why the batsmen left that delivery is because, as we all know, Shane Warne was a great spinner of the ball and he spins it a LOT and therefore, he thought it would turn away when Warne, being clever, just kept it nice and straight. A good example of leg spin bowling variations.

@crystalmethod786 indeed, this is called drift. only spinning the ball like a clockface relates to turn off the pitch. spinning it 'seam up' towards the batsman will make it dip or kick and spinning it around like a corkscrew will make it drift. a good spinner can use the three aspects in combinations and warne's ability to drift the ball was every bit as devastating as his more famous turn.
