Exactly, I live in Australia, there was a massive flood, yet the people kept their cool and got through it. Did you see that in Katrina?? No you had black people mouthing off that Bush didn't do anything for them, they went around and looted and robbed people. Bad times give you an idea of a person's character. I am glad my neighbors are Australians. A 12 year old showed some amazing courage in the wake of the flood gave his life so his little brother could live.

I guess Obama doesn't care about black people anymore than Bush was accused of. There was serious flooding in Tennessee which again, didn't have the same reaction as Katrina.The problem isn't one of morals here, but entitlements. People think they are OWED something, that's why we have a monumental deficit. It's not God's punishment, but man's stupidity.
I have to admit the mentality of the people in Queensland was sharply different to that of New Orleans, instead of turning on one another, they kept their community spirit, got together and survived.

The problem with modern day America is that it has become too factionalized, its us vs them kind of mentality that now pervades America. Australia is still pretty much one country, not yet big enough or diverse to become divisive. Even the immigrant groups who are new to Australia pitched in and helped. I spent enough time in America to know the large numbers of black Americans and Mexicans over there distrust each other as much as whites like me.

That is exactly the point, America is too polarized for anyone to "bring" together. There was once a time where Americans had a singular identity, that is no more. America is very divided among race, class, and political grounds. The very opposite of what its founders had intended. The immigration waves of the last 20 years has further polarized America, in the past immigrants were expected to assimilate, and today its press 1 for English 2 for Spanish.

Very true. There seems to be no incentive for politicians to unify people in America. I see such a movement happening in other parts of the world where people do see a common adversary. America is under the illusion that its invincible to the world outside, so instead Americans are playing off of other Americans. Its a very dangerous situation for America to be in, I think its a situation that will play itself out in other supposedly "stable" democracies.

It's also recognized as one of the best places to live in SF and most definitely one of the most vibrant and creative neighborhoods in the US. Obama is an empty suit that pledged to close those gaps and bring everyone together. That turned out to be pure rhetoric. Obama was himself a product of affirmative action and he's shown he has no intention of uniting the U.S.

That is exactly the point, America is too polarized for anyone to "bring" together. There was once a time where Americans had a singular identity, that is no more. America is very divided among race, class, and political grounds. The very opposite of what its founders had intended. The immigration waves of the last 20 years has further polarized America, in the past immigrants were expected to assimilate, and today its press 1 for English 2 for Spanish.

If you try to explain this to people , they label you a racist or a hate-monger.The U.S has been polarized countless times, you don't get a nation of 300 million who all follow one another in lockstep. However, it's the criminalization of discourse that's most frightening. Freedom of speech evidently only matters when it's someone who agrees woth you that's speaking it.

Very true. There seems to be no incentive for politicians to unify people in America. I see such a movement happening in other parts of the world where people do see a common adversary. America is under the illusion that its invincible to the world outside, so instead Americans are playing off of other Americans. Its a very dangerous situation for America to be in, I think its a situation that will play itself out in other supposedly "stable" democracies.

And honestly Obama will get a second term. The incident in Tucson only helps him, and people in 2012 will give a thumbs down to the Republicans in the Senate, so Obama will do what he does best blame the other guy to make himself look good.

What is the current unemployment rate now with Obama's TRILLION DOLLAR stimulus? 9.6%. The mass layoffs and job loss was a result of the MASSIVE LANDSLIDE in the market that occurred during the BUSH ADMIN, genius, if you had the ability to think logically and rationally, you would already know this. The unemployment rate was 7.6% in January of 2009, It's not been under 9% in 20 consecutive months, an alltime high.

@dalmatian847 -- As I said, the unemployment is around 10%, well below what I think it should be of 25 to 30%. So, I figure, the more people unemployed, the better. I don't like to work anyway when YOU can pay the bill.
BTW: I'll bet you've bred your way in to getting a tax refund anyway, which to ME is the biggest rip off of all: Having children should be a tax PENALTY. The more kids you have, the stiffer the penalty, we could solve the planets destruction if we could curb HUMANS!
