You could also argue that they where not terrible enough. If they would have just slaughtered all males in Greece at the beginning and burned everything down they wouldn't have faced such a revolt and would have been more succesfull. Either you treat ppl with respect or you commit all out genocide, anything in between is going to back fire.

Spartans were great warriors and very brave but damn they seem so dumb. Of course they fall when they manage to make all of greece hate them. They were even outnumbered by enemies at their capital. They knew how to gain victory but not how to use it

@flioink Democracies don't last forever either. No power can defeat the sand of time. The maximal time for an empire to exist is about 1000 years, not much longer than that.
