the old man is representing how active transport works, i'm guessing? For passive, the molecule is able to go by with ease[the 1st guy], for active transport [the old guy], it must be accompanied by a type of protein. my bio is a little rusty
the old man is representing something (such as glucose) entering a cell, but it needs something like a protein (the guards) to get into the cell. The boss is something (such as water) that needs to get into the cell but doesn't need proteins or whatever to get in.
