  • I don't like this

  • 1:46 Bye Bye ... Oleo ;)

  • hancock's rhythm changes.

    woooosh

  • 4:59 - 5:05 ...funniest thing I've seen in ANY video!

  • Just love it....

  • Beautiful !

    Thanks

  • Great communication

  • My gosh - superb.

  • Look at the casual dress of herb, ron, and tony. Then look at Branford. I guess the fraternal apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

  • 7 people are too retarded to get it. Oh well.

  • @Huckeybuckey Or they just don't like it? I dig it myself, but seriously, someone doesn't have to be retarded to not like/care about Jazz.

There are a lot jazz tunes that I don't like, regardless of the fact that I can appreciate them.

  • Can anybody try to stop him?

  • They don’t give a shit about the chords from the leadsheet, do they?

  • Rhythm Changes my ass..:P

  • Dammit. This sounds so much better(more than i can even begin to describe) than I last played it. Talented mother fuckers. All of them.

  • sax is good but i like brecker better

  • I love the ambiance between the musicians: they are all awesome and they have nothing to prove, so they can plug in some musical jokes...look at the bassist at 5:07, his face says it all!

  • The graduate class of MIles Davis School....

  • /watch?v=Ko0kdCf0zTE

  • 7 DEAFS ...SORRY FOR THEM

  • 5:50 WHAT WAS THAT?

  • Anybody else hear 2:57-3:00 from the ending of Coltrane's Giant Steps?

  • Was i the only one that noticed branfords chicken wings?

  • 3:21-3:25 is just not of this earth! Awesome!

  • I went to a outdoor jazz concert in Japan once. Those people really know how to enjoy themselves!

  • Maybe you have to have been supressed to be so free...

  • what a RIDICULOUS line-up! I love the rhythm section always, but adding branford was a good ideA!

  • This is one gig I would have LOVED to have been at!

  • do not like the bastardization of the head honestly, way too fast, way too loose. thats just my opinion of course

    nice solo though!

  • Japanese audiences are like a jazz musician's dream come true

  • 4:15 sounds like a muted trumpet

  • ja-zz-anese groopies at 5:00 ...yeah!!!!! :D

  • SUPER!!

  • HERBIE HANCOCK TO FINLAND!

  • hah a link with a stock lig, I like seeing that

  • I love this, but it kind of feels Branford is just trying to put on his best Wayne Shorter impression.

  • @Vinny1130, yea, they have that same static expression.

  • Ron Carter is without a doubt a fuckin' BOSS!!

  • They work together like one organism, its amazing.

  • Hey... we have a concert in Japan? Waht will we play?

I dunno, let's decide right on the stage

  • @Lottolearnstrings Its called improvisation maybe you could look up the word. There's not alway a set selection of songs unless your do a interpretations of some body of work like Gershwin. Thats what jazz musicians do. ...

  • In poland we call this " crazy horse punch " :D

  • Ok Ron was pulling his pud...spanking his monkey...giving the Japanese people what they deserve!!!! LOLOLOL

  • This is why we call it "playing" music. If you don't get that, then you never will !! Keep the faith fellas.

  • 5:00 god damn asian people.

  • Ojo! aca argentina se toca buen jazz!

  • narrow minded old racist meathead

  • Who?

  • God dammit Tony Williams why are you so good

  • GENIUS!!! Branford is such a cool dude too, real down to earth...came over to Duke and gave me a few sax lessons to

  • is that OBAMA on Saxophone?

  • haha wow

  • si, se parece a Obama, ja! aunque al que le gustaba el saxo era Klinton, tocara algo ese tipo?

  • What did Branford Start doing between 83 and 86? Honestly his early Blakey stuff on alto just wasn't very promising but he seems to have made ALOT of progress in less than 4 years.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOO

That was Crazy....I want to have that much fun doing music when I grow up!

  • this performance is genius!! these guys are master's of their craft. On the musical evolution tree, this is one incredible intelligent branch evolving right in front of our eyes...

    Thanks for posting this video!

  • the interplay in this clip is just unreal, especially at the head. These guys are just operating on some sonic plane that we just won't ever get. To compositionally improvise like this is just so fantastic.

  • i think some of u guys r missing the point here. jazz is supposed to be interpreted in anyway u want. if u want to play everything exactly the same as the original then go play some classical music

  • a wonderful performance

  • All you idiots should no jazz is a form of expressing oneself so if thats how they wanna play then so be it. Id like to see either of you chumps sit on stage besides these greats.

  • Amen to that!! Unbelievable how some people who don't understand what we do as jazz musicians can have the audacity to put their opinions in print. My goodness - to criticize unbelievably great musicians such as these is the apex of arrogance.

  • I think Branford Marsalis does a fantastic job at this chart. I think Rollins would be flattered at this fresh approach. It's what jazz is supposed to be... fresh and different each time. Thanks for the vid. I enjoyed it.

  • Yeah because everyone plays in a way to make it easy for kids to transcribe them.

  • your arse. brecker rules, transcriptions or not.

  • You sound like one of those book worm musicians that prallee cant play with as much soul and feel as these guys..the sky is the limit in jazz dummy and these guys are jazz legends so until we hear your name keep your stupind comments to yourself.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • learn how to spell geek! are you improvising on the English language, too?

  • Transcribe this mess and you aren't doin jazz, boy  You just need the name of the chords, the main melody and lets goooooooooooo...

Hey, you know what? Nobody wants to learn by heart or even read on sheet any jazz chorus!

But personnaly, I know people that can transcribe it with a few seconds delay compared to real time : they need time to write it on paper  "perfect pitch roxxoes, but you need more braincells than most of ppl have for auditive analysis

  • hahahahahaha!

  • You should maybe start thinking that they were just having fun, but maybe you're not quite happy to see that making fun is allowed on stage... :D

  • Bad Branford on this video.....

  • Is it me or did herbie quote just a taste of bye bye blackbird around 1:50?

  • you're right... 2 first bars of Bye Bye Blackbird

  • ilyalushtak obviously you aren't a painter...oh did I say that out loud? hope you saw lebowski or that won't even register. But, you're obviously very smart, right?

  • painter?

  • your a bitch

  • i know, and i'm sorry. I don't know what came over me. I once again bow down to the true jazz titans. (even though i can't stand this shit). who's kfd?

  • if you don't like the music don't watch it.

  • Greetings..I agree. Why judge music..Music is Art and anything can happen within that moment where music is created..It's not for anyone to say wether it is valid or not...

Just play, have fun and lighten up!!!

  • beautiful. Tony Williams has a great feel.

  • When was this? 70's? 80's?

  • 1986

  • Say what you will about Branford, he could still kick your ass

  • branford is bullshitting on this

  • that's called jazz. ha.

  • Yeah, it's called the Wayne Shorter faking...

  • I like a Marsalis' clear, raw tone.

  • Christian McBride is the most influential? Man, do you own any records?

  • everyones killin... even tho ron carter has the mad twangy bass sound thing going

  • He's the richest jazz bass player there is and the as far as living bass player THE most influential PERIOD!! Nuttin "twangy" about him. He's the standard all bass players follow today. Played on 3,000 records and is worth $25 million dollars!!

  • the bass has a lot of mid range "twang"

    do you play bass?

i'd say the most influential bass player living right now is christian mcbride but maybe that's just my take on things as a bass player

  • Christian McBride is pretty new though.. no doubt he's very very good.. but i don't know if he's in the same classe as ron carter and paul chambers.

  • i definitely agree with you there...

most bass players i know including myself that are coming up now are more influenced by guys like christian ray brown and dave holland or even jon pattitucci and scott lafaro

it's hard to say he's the most influential bass player but he's definitely up there

  • I guess so..

but you can (or should) never forget the original masters.

  • three thousand? Are you serious? Incredible.

  • What he means is the heavily electrified sound of the "acoustic" bass that Ron has used in varying degrees since the 70s. Many people find it difficult to listen to upright bass in a jazz setting, when it sounds like this, myself included. I can often tolerate the sound if it's someone like Ron or Ray Brown, but they are exceptions.

  • @Bluesnswing I love the sound if Ron's bass how does he get that sound

  • Amazing Man!!!los mejores!!Trackiando como son!!Animales!!

  • Branford plays a really Shorterlike solo.

  • kinda like dexter gordon tho too

  • His tone reminds me of james carter.

  • Branford Maralis looks like a nice guy. That son of a bitch can play some kick ass motherfucking cock ass shit music goddamnit piece of crap sonofabitch fucking hell.

  • You are very good at swearing!

  • Thank you :)... I´m working on it

  • There should be more comments like this on youtube

  • There will, my friend. There will. :)

  • great stuff

  • This is from Live Under the Sky '86 Tokyo, Japan. Absolutely Fantastic interplay!

This makes you really miss the 80's.

    We miss Tony Williams drumming!!

    Peace.
