what a fool not to go to college. If he's expecting Nike to pick him up jumping 7'4 its just not gonna happen. 7'4 is sick for a high schooler though. Take that talent to college man.
he's gonna train for the 08 bejing olympics and opt not to go to college...bad call? we'll see. but word is NIKE has given him a contract to train with them so if thats true he's making bank
Bad call...7'4" won't get you anywhere even in the Trials, and that's assuming he can duplicate this jump. 7'4" won't win a NCAA title, either, indoor or out. There are tons of collegiate guys that can hit 7'3" on a consistent basis and Nike wouldn't even consider giving a "contract". Contract guys are 7'6" consistent. Doubt one jump in high school is going to get you into the Trials or a contract. Huge jump for a high school kid, no doubt, though.
yeah i know. tell me about it. but people need to understand that one time marks dont mean anything ya know. Kyle lancaster is a great jumper thats been over 7 5 many times but where is his nike contract ya know? carter is no way as good as him.
Exactly. Did he go to the Trials in '04? There are guys that just have a great meet and everything falls into place on one jump, but they never touch it again. HJ is funny like that...so much technique involved. It's not like sprints where, okay, everything fell into place for me...no.
Totally agree with your train of thought, consistent 2.24 m high jumpers at the world level are becoming a dime a dozen.... wouldn't be surprised if the olympic trial qualifiers in Eugene all went at least 2.33 m.... at the world level they'll probably need 2.38 to medal.
Absolutely. I don't know that my comment was very well received at first...I'm just saying that guys that get contracts are huge all the time...not just one jump. I jumped with both previous Nebraska record holders (Kyle Odvody and Aaron Plas). Both those guys went 7'2" or 7'3" in high school, but neither did much at the national level...worlds are an entirely new bear in itself.
The contracts are reserved for folks like Jesse Williams & Tora Harris that can do 2.30 whenever needed. I think Jesse has a 2.40 that he'll 'uncork' someday, if you really like the jumps watch Linus Thornblad, he'll be the next Sweedish HJ king when Stefan Holm retires....the only HJ in the world today that could conceivably get at Sotomayor's record is the 21 year old Russian..he'll probably go 2.42 before the indoor season ends.
The single guy that ever blew my mind was Stefan. How in the WORLD do you get a guy that "short" to be such a world competitor? If you're not 6'3", forget about it. And here's this little Swede that's 1.81 jumping 2.40? Incredible athlete. Imagine if his center of gravity was 2 inches higher...
Hey...i've played basketball against this kid for four years in high school and he's for real hes legit...I myself am a part of 3 4X800 1st place national metals and have watched him since 6th grade while being in track this isnt a 1 time thing hes def going to keep getting better...i believe he's been going through some olymic qualifying meets right now but im not sure what hes done
If he does not go to school thinking he's gonna get rich off nike he's really make a dumb ass mistake....Trust me...after the olympic year if he's not a consistent 2.30m jumper, nike is gonna drop him fast..This coming from a highjumper who had a shoe contract for 2 years with new balance...Somebody better get in this kids ear....
he hasn't made the olympic A Standard for the olympic trials and if he dosn't soon there isn't much chance for him because my brother knows him and he isn't going to college as far as anyone knows...
yup, i was standing right below the scoreboard. it was pointless to even try clapping with the folks in the stands because they didn't catch on that he spent so long staring at the bar, and then even taking his time going into his run through.
i was there! and apparantly standing really close to whoever filmed this... He's so sick but idk about his decision to not go to college and train for the olympics. the people who started the "kearney clap" are semi retarded seeing as how they started about 30 seconds early 3 jumps in a row
This comment is awesome show
