Help me, i've downloaded a video file, avi, but it's like 700mb and it says u need to download a video player to play the encoding, i know it's a scam but can i decode it to play movie or is it a fake movie file and they did what u did to make oit appear larger? but how that makes me actually have to download that much!
On other hand supose the following. Imagine that I use null bytes to count some kind of occurence, for example number of stones around me. This means that if I write 3 null bytes that mean that exists 3 stones near me. With this in mind to represent "n" stones i write "n" null bytes. In this case the bytes have meaning and, therefore, a kind of functionality. So, in this particular case, having a number "n" of null bytes or none null bytes is different. We must be carefull with our words. :D
@balhoto Clever analogy. I completely understand where you are coming from Balhoto but the thing is the argument can go two ways regardless. While many way interpret the statement one way, others may interpret a different way, while others could care less of the precise interpretation. No matter how I name the video, there will always be someone that could argue the validity of the terminology used. My videos are more geared towards assisting novice-intermediate users - Hence the title.
@mushroomHEADBANGERS This is something that can debated endlessly and I have page long debates on choice of terms used on my Facebook, some other videos, and other content (Not just those posted by myself) and found that it's a pointless debate to have - Especially when you have two individuals from different IT fields (IE: Network Engineer vs Computer Programmer). For things like this, I think it's best to just analyze the content of the video rather than the title. Agree to disagree :)
Maybe for you is just a fact of preference. I respect that. But for many others it's not. It's a fact of accuracy and precision in words. Many of us believe that the statement "faking file size" means the hability to report a file size that's not the real one. With this in mind if the file size is, actually, the real size that is not faking. If for you is the same thing ok I respect that. But you must believe that for some people this is really relevant.
It's not really "faking" the size, it is the actual size. It's just the filler bytes increasing the file size blatantly, but maybe it's just me and my terminology for 'fake'.
@itsdannyftw It goes either way I think. Your argument is logical and accurate but then again one could argue the same for "fake". It's a matter of interpretation. I agree with you in all honesty. It's just easier and more appealing to use fake in the title :P
@mushroomHEADBANGERS Sorry but i don't understand the interpretation here. What is realy happening is that you're injecting zero value bytes into the file, so whatever is your interpretation the data is on the file. Faking the size means inform a size, lets say, A to the operative system when there is no data being inserted into it..
@balhoto The data added is null and does not contribute functionality to the file. It's only purpose is to make the size of the file larger so that it appears to have more, or different, functionality. The definition of Fake touches base on something that is misleading or provides false appearance. So with that said, I think it's fair to say that adding null values specifically to make a file appear larger, for whatever reason (IE: Additional/Different functionality) is considered faking...
@mushroomHEADBANGERS Ok. I agree with you when you say that zero valued bytes don't add any kind of functionality. But the title tell nothing about funcionality. What is said is how to fake the size. And when you talk about size you are talking about the number of bytes not what they mean or what they do. Faking size means that the operative system report a file size for which there's no data. I like the video it shows a quick way to fill a file with data,
@balhoto I'm sorry, I can't create a title that pleases everyone - especially those that over-evaluate terminology until the point where it's more so just a personal preference than fact or relevance. In either case, I'm glad you liked the video :P
Lol, no. I'm not sure how so many people confuse what's being done here. To reduce file size you must use compression or a different format. The binary value of a file determines it's file size, their is no way around that unless you change the content of the file by either compressing it or converting it.
This technique is used to exaggerate the content of a file to make it seem bigger then it really is.
ha iv always wondered if someone could hack an sd card or something to hold over its capacity like making a 2GB sd card hold like 7GB of data., trough like tome method.or code.
No. Software manipulation can not change hardware specifications. It can make it look like something it's not but the hardware won't live up to that standard.
All data is made up with Binary, even code and configuration changes take up bits (0's and 1's). A SD Card of 2 GB would contain 17,179,869,184 bits and 7 GB of data would be 60,129,542,144 bits.
No matter what you do you can not change the amount of bit space on a Hard-Drive to allow more bits to be stored. It's simply impossible.
If you watch and understand the video you will know that this is used to INCREASE the size of a file making it seem like something it's not by adding null hexidecimal values. However, you can not remove pre-existing hexidecimal values as this will cause the file to not function. So in conclusion, you can not reduce the file-size of a 500 MB file to 10 MB via Hexidecimal alterations...unless you intend on having a corrupt file. If you need to reduce video size try a different codec or compression
Aside from compressing or using an alternative file-type or quality format there is generally very little you can to decrease the size. The HEX already displayed is actually part of the program and in most cases removing some with cause the file to be corrupted. However, there are many programs out there that can decrease the size of executables (Many are compiled with extra "padding") as well as Images/Video without decreasing quality.

does it actually increase the file size so it takes up more disk space or it just appears its larger? if u downloaded it would it take as long as a 700MB movie would or would it take as long as 2.94MB?
It's a legit file size increase so it's quite literally the size you specify in all aspects (Takes up that much space, takes as long as another of that size would take to transfer, etc..). So it's an excellent way to cloak a file.
Lol, I figured it was a matter of time before someone asked that. No, you can't. The existing Hexadecimal values are part of the file itself. If you delete or alter them you could corrupt the file. If you wish to make a file smaller you will have to use compression. However, there is a tool that can recompile executables to make them smaller but it doesn't work for any other file types.

if we make the file fake size....
f.e i have 50 gb free disk and i make fake size from 10 gb to 2 gb
will i have more free space to disk then?

So if you try and upload it to an image hosting website or soemthing, will it take up more space?
