  • I actually find this wonderfully creepy, like a children's nightmare toy story... And I think that Mozart would have enjoyed this weird commedia dell' arte production... It's a refreshing change from all the standard FreeMason archetypal, alchemical symbolism (which can also be really magical) ... The Magic Flute is an open invitation for directors, and designers to go wild . It's part of the appeal, and the fun of the opera . Dessay looks cool as the " crazy, ugly, homeless queen of the night.

  • Looks like Cyndi Lauper and ronald McDonald Had a baby >.<

  • Please, someone fire that art director, and everyone responible for this horrible scene. Beautiful interpretation, as always it is from Natalie Dessay.

  • oO it took me quite a while to recognize Natalie... only when she started singing I noticed it was her! I was kinda thinking, "if she's the Queen, why isn't she there??"

the orange coloration made me think of Halloween... and The Nightmare Before Christmas movie, not sure why...

    xD it's funny though!

  • No even Gaga would be ashamed of this farce

  • Nice hat...

  • Even if I´m the only one here...I love this production, the singers, the set, everything... personally I think its genious and in 1997 it was wonderfully different! :-)

  • Diana Damrau, Natalie Dessay, Edita Gruberova, whoever! They're all so beautiful! How dare the director/costumer put Natalie Dessay in this get-up! LOL! I would have killed that person if I were her! LOL!!! She could have EASILY taken the insanity plea!

  • Why would they let street mimes stage this?

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA directly from Alice in Wonderland

  • I didn't know she sang Queen Of The Night in Vegas!?!? Damn! :-)

  • We must kill the Costume designer -__________________-

7it's like the madhatter for alice in the wonderland -_-

  • como pudo vestir eso? no le avisaron antes o que? no puedo creerlo!!,

  • brava! ma che costume, orrendo.

  • AHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA ! director should be shot ! :))))))) together with costume designer

I'm curious what the other scenes look like , this performance must be funny :)

  • Is it Haloween?

  • it's not natalie dessay!!!! her voice is very different!!!! and famous !!! sorry but it's not natalie!!! natalie is better!!!

  • Nice interpretation but...what the hell is this set?? And the costumes..??

  • Nossa,que montagem moderna.Achei o palhaço IMPRESSIONANTE,vocalmente falando.Que potencia e extensão vocal.

  • No nightmare could be so scary.

  • at least it is sung well.... haha.

  • This is the creepiest Queen of the Night. EVER! :((

  • They turned the Queen of the Night into a mix of the Joker, Pennywise and Ace Frehley.

  • And the Stephen King's "it".

Yes, there, she's a very odd queen of the night. But have you read the libretto of "the Magic flute"? It's very odd, too !

  • brava!

  • Hideous! how could Natlie Dessay accept to perform in such awful costumes and wearing that make up? Is this a kiss-cheapcircus-the thing based version?

  • i think they isnpiring on marinlyn manson for her outfit...LOL. I don't imagine Konigin dressed like that at all. she is a queen... here she looks like a mix of Kiss, Manson and Linda Perry...weeeird!!

  • Uaaahhhh mami!!! I have never seen such a scaring Queen of the Night. Ok the zylinder hat doesn't fit well. But Natalie Dessay really teaches anybody to be frighten. Nothing other shall the Queen of the Night represent. I am sure Mozart would have loved this production.

  • She doesn't look like a QUEEN at all. It looks like she is "The crazy, ugly, homeless of the night"

Beautiful voice though (as expected from the magical Dessay)

  • I'm all for artistic and creative interpretations, but I couldn't stop seeing her as Dee Schneider from Twisted Sister! very bizarre!

  • This is of of the funniest/strangest/ugliest Queen of the Nicght I've ever seen. I would never recognize Dessay without the sound!

  • Nah man, her circle-eyes give it away! =]

  • what? did i just take some heavy drugs or something?....

beautiful voice, but what in the world is going on!?

  • hahahahaha

  • speechless.... what costume is that????!???

  • Dessay sounds good, but the rest of this production and the costumes really just freak me out :p

  • Poor Natalie!

This is the worst production I've ever seen!

  • She chose to be in it

  • omg well its real that its reeeeeeeeeeeeally awful as a scenography ....dessay really looks unrecognisable but at least it was an original idea right ???? i guess..... O_O;;;

  • lol, right...

  • Salzburg always have such bad productions. They did it to Dessay and to Damrau!

  • Looks like they got Dessay worse than they got Damrau xD

  • this is the joker singing.. WTF?? and what's with the claws? eww....what were these people thinking?

  • The Joker meets Kiss meets Freddy Kruger... Lady GaGa would be proud... Great singing, though...

  • wow...that was disturbing :( what is up with the costumes??gosh I mean this actually made the Queen of the Night a bit more comic in my opinion

  • It's a circus! And a Kiss concert? I'm surprised she doesn't spit fire or blood or something. Notice when the hair catches in the fingers?

I do love the singing though!

  • spitting blood!!!XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • @Luindriel, I was thinking that this could be a Las Vegas production of Die Zauberflote with her costume!

  • .... LEAVE THE FRICKING SETTING ALONE!

Ye gods, I hate modern stage directors.

  • I hate them too! :-/

  • Guys, you've forgotten the red nose!

  • well sung, but ridiculous!

  • Spaghetti fingers yeah !! :)

  • mozart mujst be shaking in his tomb :/

  • unfortunately :(

  • @dopepenguin Laughing, more like it. But in a good way.

  • Well, I'm scared. Not quite sure in the way Mozart intended...

  • Opera meets circus... hahaha

  • Awful costumes...

  • LOL at the production.. and costuming..wow.

  • don't you like it??? XDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • I find her "arm" disturbing too XD

  • XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • the typical achim freyer XD.

    thx for the vid!!!!

  • haha the green hat just completes the outfit..

  • creeeeeeeppppy.

  • Natalie Dessay is a great singer, but her act is not as good as her aria.

I wanna listen to her "Der Hoelle Rache" with classical costume. I think this make-ups and costumes disturbe the opera...

  • Totally agreed!

  • I love Natalie Dessay! She's great! But why did they dress her up as Mrs. Joker?

  • haha! You'll have to get used to Salzburg's productions, they're totally weird!!!

  • "HELL'S REVENGE IS BURNING IN MY HEART! KILL YOUR FATHER!!!"

    (just kidding...)

...yeah, the costume really doesn't fit the aria...

  • ahahahahahahahah!

  • :P Yeah, if she's dressed as a joker, it doesn't really get the point of the aria across that great! Normally..."hell's revenge" is not that much of a joke.

Then again...if you're a crazed Queen of the Night...things may be different...

  • Totally agreed! But it's always like this in Salzburg... 'innovative'(???).

And you haven't seen René Papé in this production... Natalie is the best dressed of the night!

  • "Innovative"...indeeed...

  • Was he Sarastro?

  • Or Papageno?

  • no es René Papé sino k René Pape xD

  • of course, don't worry, I was just wondering ;)

  • Por cierto, enhorabuena por tu video nº 100 ^^

  • Gracias ^^

  • thank you for posting.

I think that this is the best acting of natalie from all the other productions of her where she played this roll.

here she's really evil, In the others productions she's something like a worried mother and yeah it's weird but I really love natalie here. wonderfull acting and singing.

  • this is one of the weirdest things I've ever seen on stage!!! LOL

  • i know, it had to be at Salzburg!!! xDDDDDDDDDD

  • Yeah, I wish we had in Europe some more rather conservative / traditional productions like in America.

  • Totally agreed!!! I don't think Mozart would have liked this :-P

  • No composer of the past would like this kind of productions. I have seen many bad stagings for Die Zauberflöte, but this one was the most horrible. Fortunately, Natalie doesn't wear this kind of costumes anymore nowadays ;)

  • Fortunately xDDDDDDDD

That's why I love the met productions they're great!!!

  • The MET is one of the best opera houses in the world :) The other two greatest opera houses are La Scala and Covent Garden.

  • Waw!

    XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • jeje! si, y creeme, no quieres ver a Papé como Sarastro xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • Si in effetti è meglio che non li veda....

Sti allestimenti super moderni non mi piacciono molto!!!
