Marvin had a musical weakness - he just didn't know how to make a crap album!
"After agreeing to the deal, the singer went into his recording studio in an effort to give Motown a "lazy, bad" album starting sessions in the spring of 1976. However, as Marvin set on making the "lazy" album, the singer's deep emotions and bittersweet feelings for his soon-to-be former wife took over the music."
I was 16 when this album was first released and hated it because I had become accustomed to Marvin's booty shaking and party music. Now as an adult who appreciates "Grown Folks Music" I regard this as one of his best works, only second to "What's Going On". THANK GOD FOR MATURITY!
@DustySoulLtd Marvin wasn't a "booty shaking and party music" type of artist. The year before this he released the only single in his recording career up to that point that could fit that description, which was 'Got To Give It Up' in 1977. And he was initially reluctant about releasing it, but Motown wanted him to hop on to the Disco bandwagon, so he obliged with a dance floor classic which was closer to Funk than Disco, which he wasn't too keen on, with few exceptions like JT's 'Disco Lady'.
@bolder2009 Thats not quite true. Marvin did aspire to be a jazz crooner like Nat King Cole, however he did record his fair share of party music albeit reluctantly: Hitch Hike, If I Could Build My Whole World Around You, Stubborn Kind Of Fellow, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Some Kind Of Wonderful...Need I continue? Booty shaking didn't start in the 70's darling, nor did Marvin's booty shaking music start with Got To Give It Up.
@DustySoulLtd Ok after I finished preparing my oldies set for tonight I had to log in log in again to include Take This Heart of Mine, Wonderful One, Ain't That Peculiar, I'll Be Doggone, Too Busy Thinkin Bout My Baby and Ain't No Mountain High Enough. Actually when you think through Marvin's discography, especially his work from the 60's there were more dance songs than ballads, particularly released as singles.
No offense to this version of the song, but the extended cut on the 2008 reissue just completely blows it away: /watch?v=I6aXP4FYuIw (put youtube.com first)
I've often wondered if he was ever aware of just how much his singing touched the soul of his most ardent fans. I mean the depth of the effect of his music. Yes, he knew the excitement of those who saw him perform, but its the spiritual connection I'm taking about. I mean..He could sing straight into my soul when I was not looking for it, and it wasn't anything I could do about it. The brothers voice just "knocked" me out.
Marvin Gaye is my favorite singer of all time, and always will be. He just coincidentally would put words to the feelings already in my young (then teenage) heart, and even today as well. It was almost as if I had some spiritual connection with his music...I felt taken on a mesmerizing musical journey of the heart, it was an incredible experience...real intense.
Its nice to see people finally coming to appreciate the degree of Marvin's great talent. I've known this for a long time fellow YouTubers. I understood this at a time when(I'm talking the 70's) Michael Jackson is what people heard on the air waves, and television. I listened to not only Marvin's popular hits, but I had equal appreciation for those songs that weren't hits. It seems to me at least that those are the most profound songs Marvin released. I've been Marvins fan since the age of 9.

Yeah he said when he did his layers he would hear what other voices would sing as far as style an tone which he learned from his doo wop days with his mentor Harvey Fuqua (rip) an the moon glows and his falsetto, funny thing is he was insecure about his chest voice because he didnt have a manly-gruff tone like Pendergrass.

@aljabi2008 I so agree with you, my friend, who ever you are!. This is old school, you have to experience and be in the era in time to even relate to something of this nature to even relate.
What is all the "extra" about? Listen to the man for the MESSAGE of calling out/seeing past folly or at least step to this funk in the name of Love. It's time to get it together, y'all! P(e)ace.
Now tell me, if you take the vocals out this, one has a steppers song for the dance floor. When MG is on those percussions and keys that smooth groove is infectious.
@4linedogg exactly..his wife was compensated it for this..this was so under rated this album..I believe it's his true masterpiece. since "Whats Going On".
Some stuff on this album is so honest it's funny. Like on "When did you stop Loving me" where he screams "Doooo you rember all the...BULLSHIT BABY!yeeeaaaahhh..."
He was rappin before they were rappin!!! Listen to all his vocals. He must have used atleast 50 vocal tracks or more. All his vocals. You can't even follow all that soul. He's doing so much and it's not even clashing. He was the GENIUS!!!
This track smokes! Someone said it was timeless, I agree! The 'unfunky' critics gave it a bad rating, partially because it didn't have a typical song structure...verse, chorus, verse, etc....unfunky indeed. ie., who are the guys at warrdotorg to tell me what sounds good and what doesn't? R&B/Funk review from a pop view? If you like Marvin or Shuggy support them and keep R&B alive. This jam sure beats the hell out of a mock loop or what today's radio is playing.
Reading some of these comments is amusing knowing that this album wasn't a commercial success in its' day.....so what is it? Exposure to Marvin's music due to sampling or does it speak of the psychosis of today's generation?
This is great lyricism and great musicianship I miss the 70's soul way better than today's music I miss the wah wah guitar licks in music maybe that is why I love the brand new heavies so much they take me back to the days of 70's soul. Horns strings wah pedals fender p bass, Les paul guitar and fender strat fender rhodes piano that was the 70's real music not some bull shit auto tunes were wolf shitty no musicianship fake rnb.
Well, Marvin sang about love and relationships too. I think what you mean to say is that Marvin did that and so much more. And his songs seem way more personal.
@s0lidstateguy Why shouldn't I take pride in being black? I take pride in who I am and being black is a big part of that. I'm pretty sure you were raised to celebrate the holidays of whatever culture you are so why try and clown me for taking pride in being black? You're just mad that Marvin Gaye isn't whatever you are so you can't make any type of cultural claim on him. Black people excel at music as a whole, just accept that and vibe my friend. BLACKPOWER!!!
@s0lidstateguy Be that as it may, you are sadly mistaken if you've pegged me as an ignorant person. I take pleasure in knowledge and wisdom, which is why I just loooove being BLACK. The more I find out about my true history that happier I am. If you were happy with yourself you wouldn't feel threatened by my comment and feel compelled to reply to things that don't concern you. Listening to Marvin makes me feel good about being black. I'm not at all sorry that my happiness offends u.
@s0lidstateguy Also, It is foolish not to be proud of who you are whatever your race is. Almost as foolish and naive as believing that "there are no divisions in humanity." That statement immediately evaporates when applied to the furnace of reality. Only a fool truly believes that his race or cultural background has no effect on his/her life and who you are as a person. I am extremely proud of who I am, and this makes you upset. What does that say about you? Now.....Back to the Music!!
@Swag2Spare Sounds like you have some insecurities :) I was born without both my legs, should I be proud of this? Why be proud over something you have no control over? Reevaluate your life if you think otherwise.
@s0lidstateguy Be proud of the things you were and are able to accomplish without the use of both of your legs or in spite of it. Normally people with these types of obstacles in thier life tend to have a more positive outlook on themselves and on life in general which causes me to doubt that u r telling the truth. If u r telling the truth then I feel very sorry for you because ur negative outlook is only serving to make matters worse.....

@s0lidstateguy Be proud of what u r able to accomplish without them. Normally people with these type of obstacles in life have a better outlook on themselves and on life in general. I just saw ur page, it seems u get a kick out of infecting people with negative energy. If you really are handicapped I feel sorry for you bc ur negative outlook just makes it worse for u.
Be proud of what you are able to do in spite of be born without your legs. Normally people with these sort of handicaps have a more positive outlook on life that helps them achieve more than the average person who takes thier health for granted. I saw ur page, u like to give out negative energy. This leads me to believe that ur not telling the truth...
Be proud of what you are able to do in spite of be born without your legs. Normally people with these sort of handicaps have a more positive outlook on life that helps them achieve more than the average person who takes thier health for granted.
@s0lidstateguy I am extremely proud of the challenges that my people overcame together because I know that the same strength that they called upon to accomplish those things and get through the hardships they got through lies within me. That is why I am EXTREMELY proud to be BLACK. I am extremely proud of my peoples true contribution to civilization that goes unacknowledged in western society....
@s0lidstateguy I am proud of the sublime musical prowess of my people. We have created genres of music that have been imitated by almost every cultural group in the world. From country, to rock and roll to hip hop and RnB. I think that is an awful lot to be proud of. All of this doesn't even include my own personal reasons for being proud of being black which I don't think is any of your business. However I could write a dissertation on why one like myself should be proud of being Black. ...
@s0lidstateguy Are you that insecure with who you are that you find fault with anyone who isn't? My original statement wasn't directed at you yet for some reason you took offence to it. I don't know you and didn't know you existed until you felt compelled to respond. You need to do some soul searching my friend. If you were happy with yourself nothing I said or did would bother you even if it was about YOU. However I made a statement about MYSELF and you took offense to it.
@s0lidstateguy I AM HAPPY THAT I AM BLACK, get over it and get over yourself and leave me alone. Listen to my uncle Marvin and vibe and feel good. Find something about yourself to feel good about and focus on that instead of trying to spread negative energy on Marvin's page. Find your own happiness instead of trying to steal mines. Now Back to the Music!!
@Swag2Spare Here in America, African rhythm and European melody came together to form the sort of music that we have. So to dismiss any white contribution to black American music, or any black contribution to white American music, is just ignorant. You don't see any Marvin Gayes or Jimi Hendrixes coming out of Africa, do you? Just like there weren't any white Elvises or Frank Sinatras before the black influence on America. Our American musical heritage is something we should all be proud of.
@Luckilius Those comments were left in defense of someone ridiculing me for being proud of being black. If you read the comments carefully you will see that I did not dismiss any particular culture, I spoke solely on the contributions of my culture that I am proud of because the question was put to me. It is ignorant to comment on something that doesn't concern you, especially when you don't know the full story. Again, I don't understand why my cultural pride evokes such ignorant negativity.
@Swag2Spare If I said something like "I love Elvis Presley's music, Elvis makes me glad to be WHITE!!," wouldn't that sound kind of ridiculous to you?
@Luckilius The only reason that would sound ridiculous to me is because Elvis Presley sang rock n roll which was invented by black people, and he sang it during an era where black people were still singing it. He is to rock and roll what Eminem in to rap or Robin Thicke is to rnb. Marvin Gaye sang soul music which is invented by black people and makes my heart smile that as a black entertainer he represents me. Marvin Gaye is an expression of black culture to the world.
i've been racin against time tryin my best to find my way change my world in just one day blowin coke all up my nose gettin in and out my clothes foolin round wit midnight hoz but that chapter of my life's closed
This a great song i remember it never got any air play when the album came out around '78 but once you got the album a lot of great songs like this one were discovered
Dam son this track make me want to walk across the hall and smack the hsit out of my boss. Like Whappppppp...And he looks at me with a puzzled face like
Now you see this is what it is. This along with other of MG's classics is true through and through. One can sit and get off on the lyrics and that's cool. But break it down to it's least common denominator check out the pecussion, bass, then synthersizers which I especilly like and you got a hit song over and over again. Genius Classic all rolled into one . You went to heaven much too soon MG
nobody captured the struggle of life as well as the romance and pain of love like Mr. Gaye by far this is the most fluid romantic, sad jammin ass album ever
The pain, agony, and sadness was used as fuel to provide the world with this album!! Clearly one of the greatest albums ever recorded.... in music's history. Marvin is one of kind... we will never see anyone like him again!
i so agree with that this album is deeper than some radio banger this is a hurting man pouring his soul out for us too enjoy like nas said unfair exchange but thank you marvin you truly were the greatest
A very close female friend whose 9 yrs my senior absolutely LOVES this music, as do I. I'm gonna order the album for her, but I'm somewhat tempted to keep it myself, lol.
Marvin loves you and loves all and was the most superior artist for his time and our time. I love the man and I hope he touches the souls of men and women like he does mine. I recommend listening to 1:18 in the song. Marvin-"Sometimes i am unable to move. I let Temptation get me off of my groove." yeah! Take care everyone and one last quote from Mr. Marvin Gaye "If we were all children you know the world would be a better place." peace out yall.

I think it's B. Which in other words means that Marvin was ahead of his time. Or rather, TIMELESS...

@s0lidstateguy i came in and read his comment and thought the same we are all one fuck a race man aint no division in humanity
LdottotheGO 1 year ago
@s0lidstateguy Why shouldn't I take pride in being black? I take pride in who I am and being black is a big part of that. I'm pretty sure you were raised to celebrate the holidays of whatever culture you are so why try and clown me for taking pride in being black? You're just mad that Marvin Gaye isn't whatever you are so you can't make any type of cultural claim on him. Black people excel at music as a whole, just accept that and vibe my friend. BLACKPOWER!!!

@Swag2Spare Ignorance is bliss, my friend.
s0lidstateguy 1 year ago
@s0lidstateguy Be that as it may, you are sadly mistaken if you've pegged me as an ignorant person. I take pleasure in knowledge and wisdom, which is why I just loooove being BLACK. The more I find out about my true history that happier I am. If you were happy with yourself you wouldn't feel threatened by my comment and feel compelled to reply to things that don't concern you. Listening to Marvin makes me feel good about being black. I'm not at all sorry that my happiness offends u.
Swag2Spare 1 year ago
@s0lidstateguy Also, It is foolish not to be proud of who you are whatever your race is. Almost as foolish and naive as believing that "there are no divisions in humanity." That statement immediately evaporates when applied to the furnace of reality. Only a fool truly believes that his race or cultural background has no effect on his/her life and who you are as a person. I am extremely proud of who I am, and this makes you upset. What does that say about you? Now.....Back to the Music!!
Swag2Spare 1 year ago
@Swag2Spare Sounds like you have some insecurities :) I was born without both my legs, should I be proud of this? Why be proud over something you have no control over? Reevaluate your life if you think otherwise.
s0lidstateguy 1 year ago
@s0lidstateguy Be proud of the things you were and are able to accomplish without the use of both of your legs or in spite of it. Normally people with these types of obstacles in thier life tend to have a more positive outlook on themselves and on life in general which causes me to doubt that u r telling the truth. If u r telling the truth then I feel very sorry for you because ur negative outlook is only serving to make matters worse.....

@Swag2Spare Tell me the challenge you overcame to make you feel proud to be black, otherwise shut the hell up.
s0lidstateguy 1 year ago
@s0lidstateguy I am extremely proud of the challenges that my people overcame together because I know that the same strength that they called upon to accomplish those things and get through the hardships they got through lies within me. That is why I am EXTREMELY proud to be BLACK. I am extremely proud of my peoples true contribution to civilization that goes unacknowledged in western society....
Swag2Spare 1 year ago
@s0lidstateguy I am proud of the sublime musical prowess of my people. We have created genres of music that have been imitated by almost every cultural group in the world. From country, to rock and roll to hip hop and RnB. I think that is an awful lot to be proud of. All of this doesn't even include my own personal reasons for being proud of being black which I don't think is any of your business. However I could write a dissertation on why one like myself should be proud of being Black. ...
Swag2Spare 1 year ago
@s0lidstateguy Are you that insecure with who you are that you find fault with anyone who isn't? My original statement wasn't directed at you yet for some reason you took offence to it. I don't know you and didn't know you existed until you felt compelled to respond. You need to do some soul searching my friend. If you were happy with yourself nothing I said or did would bother you even if it was about YOU. However I made a statement about MYSELF and you took offense to it.
Swag2Spare 1 year ago
@s0lidstateguy I AM HAPPY THAT I AM BLACK, get over it and get over yourself and leave me alone. Listen to my uncle Marvin and vibe and feel good. Find something about yourself to feel good about and focus on that instead of trying to spread negative energy on Marvin's page. Find your own happiness instead of trying to steal mines. Now Back to the Music!!
Swag2Spare 1 year ago
@Swag2Spare Love the music..... And you too.
NebKheru7 1 year ago
@Swag2Spare Here in America, African rhythm and European melody came together to form the sort of music that we have. So to dismiss any white contribution to black American music, or any black contribution to white American music, is just ignorant. You don't see any Marvin Gayes or Jimi Hendrixes coming out of Africa, do you? Just like there weren't any white Elvises or Frank Sinatras before the black influence on America. Our American musical heritage is something we should all be proud of.
Luckilius 1 year ago 2
@Luckilius Those comments were left in defense of someone ridiculing me for being proud of being black. If you read the comments carefully you will see that I did not dismiss any particular culture, I spoke solely on the contributions of my culture that I am proud of because the question was put to me. It is ignorant to comment on something that doesn't concern you, especially when you don't know the full story. Again, I don't understand why my cultural pride evokes such ignorant negativity.
Swag2Spare 1 year ago
@Swag2Spare If I said something like "I love Elvis Presley's music, Elvis makes me glad to be WHITE!!," wouldn't that sound kind of ridiculous to you?
Luckilius 1 year ago
@Luckilius The only reason that would sound ridiculous to me is because Elvis Presley sang rock n roll which was invented by black people, and he sang it during an era where black people were still singing it. He is to rock and roll what Eminem in to rap or Robin Thicke is to rnb. Marvin Gaye sang soul music which is invented by black people and makes my heart smile that as a black entertainer he represents me. Marvin Gaye is an expression of black culture to the world.
