When you have statues of someone (idols) and you pray to them (the hail Mary is a prayer to Mary specifically, just to name one of the many prayers Catholics pray to Mary) then you DO worship that person. The "Hail Mary" is not a prayer to Mary, it is commonly known as the angelic salutation and it is found in Luke 1:28 where the angel Gabriel is addressing Mary.

Mary was in her physical body, alive on earth at that time. Mary is today no longer alive on this earth (care do dispute that one, really?).
