I had the "heart problem". you need to start at the point at the bottom and go up and left \ and without taking the brush off go all the way round the heart shape and back down on the right / making sure that it connects on the bottom.

I must be the only person who doesn't hate the controls. I actually enjoy them and rarely have problems. And I played it without even knowing the whole Z button thing, just found out about before writing this...
I found it best when played in a dark room to limit light interference and using quick strokes, not taking half and hour to draw a line perfectly. Doing that the only time I stuff up something like a power slash is when I actually miss the target.

For me, the hardest pattern was the heart. Not the "Heaven" kanji, but the heart. Whats more is that the game glitched and instead of having me draw the "V" pattern, it had me draw a heart. So I had to draw it not once, but TWICE.
OMG! The Kanji was the most annoying one ever. But strange as it is, I used the Z button for the entire pattern, AND IT WORKED. It was crappy, but it freakin' worked! I am utterly suprised.

I did Star, clover, heart, star, heaven. After the second star the thought finally changed to the Kanji symbol. Using the Z button to draw all the lines works! It took me an hour to draw it carefully. Then I got frustrated and used Z for all the lines and it worked! My Kanji looked awful but it worked!!
I think this is especially difficult for left handed folks. Every time I tried it, the lines would curve up, and after the 20th failure I decided to try it with my right hand...and succeed on my second try. *sigh*
Hey all - this is what worked for me for the heaven kanji (last design). Honestly, I just did it with quick strokes because I was getting fucking tired of failing and he accepted it. I would recommend using Z for all the straight lines except the last design. Good luck guys!
Guys, I found the trick to it, use only straight lines with the z button. After like 30 tries, I just said "fuck it" and drew a really crappy one with only the z button and it worked.

When I drew the V and went back to the little girl and she said ''viewtiful,'' I couldn't believe it! Its one thing to have the dojo guy reference viewtiful joe, but this is the icing on the cake. Thats one of the reasons this game is win. =)
Grrrr!!! I'm having problems....mine is playstation 2 and I'm stuck on the heart......last time since I completed the game and didn't do charcoal girl I got stuck on the star. So my question is is how sensitive is the drawing?
Ok I just did the star and I have the Wii version. I was using the Z button, but even that didn't work. But then I tried using the A button to create the star and it worked on my 2nd try compared to the 50 times I tried using the Z button. Hope this helps.

OMYGOD. this. is. hard. I've done the kanji at LEAST 30 times, and I swear I'm about to cry, tears are welling up in my eyes as I type this, not even kidding.
OK this is REALLY frustrating for me right now, b/c I actually DID the first design and got the praise. HOWEVER she asked me for the star again, and she gave me the vietiful joe reference. Am I doomed. Game script says that she only says that after the last design and then you get the bead. But i ain't got no bead.

@cynicsfaith This happened to me as well. I am playing the Japanese version on a Wii and I did the 1st 4 patterns in order no problem. Then heaven took me the last 2 days to get right and no bead! o_0
I actually found the star the hardest, I could never get the lines straight enough! (20+ goes later, I did it, only to find it glitched and I had to do the star again, like in the video! argh!)
The clover was the easiest, but kanji for me was very easy, it only took me two goes to do it properly. :D
@Azar- I think any japanese speaker/writer would have an aneurysm. I just drew it in the most ridiculous way and it took it. My mother's husband is half japanese, and can speak/write fluently in it. He said it looked absolutely atrocious. Don't strain yourself to make it perfect! It'll only frustrate you more.

The kanji is my biggest problem, I have tried several times to get the game to accept the stupid thing. I even went so far as to take a pictur of the girls thought bubble so i wouldnt have to go back and forth to make sure I was drawing it correctly T-T. Thank you SO MUCH for this! This was the most frustrating part of the game, and I was leaving this towards the end because I just didn't want to deal with it. Turns out you draw a star a differently than the way than I do, so when I did your version it actually accepted (after about 20 or so tries, of course). I got a glitch, too, but instead of two stars I had to draw three. The star was THE MOST frustrating symbol. The clover and kanji didn't take as long, thank god. Kudos and thanks!

The heaven kanji was NOTHING comared to the star and the V. I had the same glitch as the vid maker and after drawing the star perfectly the first time had to draw it again; the game refused to accept my next attempts for AGES. Then I had to draw the god-forsaken V about 50 times. I nearly tore all of my hair out. Then I got the clover first time and the kanji 3rd time. Thank you so much for the vid; without it I would still be on the stupid star. @-@

I've literally drawn this kanji over a hundred times and still can't get it. Friends have frustrated themselves for hours trying to get it for me....it's the last stray bead (beside the big boss beatdown) that I need. Love the game, wish they had figured this mess out prior though!!!
I love Okami... However, if there was one major flaw to the game, it would be the few times during the game where it literally takes 10-20 times drawing the same simple pattern to actually 'get it right.' I wish they had corrected this issue before its release.

I had an even worse glitch. I never got neither the heart, nor the V. I had to draw the star three times, then the clover, then the "Ten" Kanji ("Ten" meaning sky, or heaven)... which believe it or not i managed to draw on first attempt. No kidding ! But i had watched your video first and went very slowly just like you did, so maybe this explains why :P.
I have never before wanted some much to tear my own hair out in frustration. I must have attempted this at least fifty times. I simply can't get the Wii version to accept it, even when I draw it as you did.

Ah... Finally got it. I drew everything using Z like it was suggested in the comments. Didn't even vaguely resemble what it should have. My second line even intersected the one above it. But Wii still took it. *Headdesk*
The Z Button forces you to draw in a straight line. Draw the two horizontal lines like the charcoal girl says, but draw two diagonal lines instead of her curved lines - one going left, the other right. Start them from the center of the top horizontal line.
DeadlyTigerwolfClaw what im doing is just geting all the beads that i can and forget about that one and complete the charcoal girl quest right doing the symbols in order in the next game you start after you beat the game your on. Maybe it will work if you keep trying to do the heart symbol but i think its a bug. Sorry to here you have that issue to. It sucks. :( but thanks for answering to my problem and trying to help me.
I was wondering if somone could help me figure out a problem i have here. I am playing my second game and im doing the charcoal girl side quest to get the bead. But when i was on the heart symbol it wouldn't go. I agree that it's a very tough one. It took me about an hour to make this video and I had to edit out several failures. Notice in my video, the girl tells me about the "love" pattern, which is supposed to be a heart, but I had to draw a star the second time. (I omitted this from the video because I'd already demonstrated a star.)
Sometime soon I'm playing through again and I'll try to redo this video; there are some poor edits that hurt my feelings.

OK this is REALLY frustrating for me right now, b/c I actually DID the first design and got the praise. HOWEVER she asked me for the star again, and she gave me the vietiful joe reference. Am I doomed. Game script says that she only says that after the last design and then you get the bead. But i ain't got no bead.

@cynicsfaith This happened to me as well. I am playing the Japanese version on a Wii and I did the 1st 4 patterns in order no problem. Then heaven took me the last 2 days to get right and no bead! o_0

I actually found the star the hardest, I could never get the lines straight enough! (20+ goes later, I did it, only to find it glitched and I had to do the star again, like in the video! argh!)
The clover was the easiest, but kanji for me was very easy, it only took me two goes to do it properly. :D

@Azar- I think any japanese speaker/writer would have an aneurysm. I just drew it in the most ridiculous way and it took it. My mother's husband is half japanese, and can speak/write fluently in it. He said it looked absolutely atrocious. Don't strain yourself to make it perfect! It'll only frustrate you more.

The kanji is my biggest problem, I have tried several times to get the game to accept the stupid thing. I even went so far as to take a pictur of the girls thought bubble so i wouldnt have to go back and forth to make sure I was drawing it correctly T-T. And i could almost promise you I did on that looked almost perfect and it still didn't accept!!! ~kills ugly fat guy~ D:<

Thank you SO MUCH for this! This was the most frustrating part of the game, and I was leaving this towards the end because I just didn't want to deal with it. Turns out you draw a star a differently than the way than I do, so when I did your version it actually accepted (after about 20 or so tries, of course). I got a glitch, too, but instead of two stars I had to draw three. The star was THE MOST frustrating symbol. The clover and kanji didn't take as long, thank god. Kudos and thanks!

A quick hint for the heaven kanji, if you do it quickly, it helps. I kept doing it slow and I couldn't do it, I did it quick, boom.

The heaven kanji was NOTHING comared to the star and the V. I had the same glitch as the vid maker and after drawing the star perfectly the first time had to draw it again; the game refused to accept my next attempts for AGES. Then I had to draw the god-forsaken V about 50 times. I nearly tore all of my hair out. Then I got the clover first time and the kanji 3rd time. Thank you so much for the vid; without it I would still be on the stupid star. @-@

that glitch where she says 'love pattern' then thinks of a star happend to me too, i've only just started okami (brill game too) up again, an carried on, this bead has stumped me hard, the game wont accept a star or the heart and its doin my right nut! i will keep trying though at least i'm not the only on eplaying on the wii who is having trouble, the registerin' of the wii remote is the only let down is the game

I've literally drawn this kanji over a hundred times and still can't get it. Friends have frustrated themselves for hours trying to get it for me....it's the last stray bead (beside the big boss beatdown) that I need. Love the game, wish they had figured this mess out prior though!!!

I love Okami... However, if there was one major flaw to the game, it would be the few times during the game where it literally takes 10-20 times drawing the same simple pattern to actually 'get it right.' I wish they had corrected this issue before its release.
Still an amazing game though.

aah! this is the third time round ive played this game, and i set out on this on to find all the stray beads. my one seems to get stuck on the star for an eternity!!! and i just finally did the pattern right, and my wii froze! O_O i nearly threw the wii remote at the screen xD >.>

I had an even worse glitch. I never got neither the heart, nor the V. I had to draw the star three times, then the clover, then the "Ten" Kanji ("Ten" meaning sky, or heaven)... which believe it or not i managed to draw on first attempt. No kidding ! But i had watched your video first and went very slowly just like you did, so maybe this explains why :P.

I have never before wanted some much to tear my own hair out in frustration. I must have attempted this at least fifty times. I simply can't get the Wii version to accept it, even when I draw it as you did.
The truly sad part about this is that I was actually taught the proper way to write kanji. I think my Japanese professor would have an aneurysm if she saw this game.

A tip for the Kanjii - USE THE Z BUTTON.
The Z Button forces you to draw in a straight line. Draw the two horizontal lines like the charcoal girl says, but draw two diagonal lines instead of her curved lines - one going left, the other right. Start them from the center of the top horizontal line.

DeadlyTigerwolfClaw what im doing is just geting all the beads that i can and forget about that one and complete the charcoal girl quest right doing the symbols in order in the next game you start after you beat the game your on. Maybe it will work if you keep trying to do the heart symbol but i think its a bug. Sorry to here you have that issue to. It sucks. :( but thanks for answering to my problem and trying to help me.

But when i was on the heart symbol it wouldn't go. So i thought that i didn't see that it worked so i went to the next symbol. and the next but when i go back to the girl the heart is still there and it wont work so i dunno what to do. I agree that it's a very tough one. It took me about an hour to make this video and I had to edit out several failures. Notice in my video, the girl tells me about the "love" pattern, which is supposed to be a heart, but I had to draw a star the second time. (I omitted this from the video because I'd already demonstrated a star.)
Sometime soon I'm playing through again and I'll try to redo this video; there are some poor edits that hurt my feelings.

Didn't have much problems with Okami for the Wii.
