My heart is broken. The Monkees were my introduction to The Beatles. The weather sucks here in Phlly and this news sucks even more. Thank you for everything, Davy!
On the HEad CD there is an alternate take of this Harry Nilsson song with Mike Nesmith on vovals ... Mike NAILS IT, but alas, he couldn't dance and so it didn't work for the film. A great song, no matter who sings it.
Davy Jones passed away this morning in Florida from a heart attack at age 66. Condolences to the Jones family for this sad departure. Godspeed Davy :_(
I feel like the monkees peaked probably in 67/68 before they became more or less obsessed with being respected as real artists. I think they were always a real band, and they shouldn't have let the criticism bother them so much. Lots of acts back then recorded music that they didn't write-- the monkees did this, and were given the liberty to contribute a few tracks of their own. On whole, in retrospect, the resultant body of work is as diverse as it is amazing.
HEAD was screened in Toronto a couple years back from a mint 35mm print.... I remember seeing this on the big screen, its even more mind blowing.... After the song the audience broke out in applause.
Look up Toni Basil, the girl Davy is dancing with here; she actually choreographed his moves here, believe it or not, and choregraphed many other celebrities when they had to dance. What's ironic is, though she is dancing with Davy in this movie, she wrote a song called "Mickey, you're so fine", which was about Mickey Dolenz!
Considering that Davy's father died just before the release of "Head", might make one think of this as the most poignant scene in the movie. Ironically, Davy and his old man were pals.
This is one of my favorite parts of this movie, and I am not a song and dance type of guy. This whole movie, once you get it, is one of the most underrated movies of all time. I wonder if you had watched it when it came out, would it have immediately made more sense, considering how people were thinking.
I think it would have, since the country was much more in a "psychedelic" type of mood. It may seem like a bunch of 60s nonsense now, but I think at the time it was more understood- maybe. I've recently discovered, since listening to the Monkees boxed set, that they were more of a serious band than people give them credit for- they're not so much the teenybopper band but rather 4 serious musicians locked inside of a teenybopper facade.
@DrKnife007 - it is my favourite bit too - I think that it is one of the most professionally done. And I only just found out that the woman dancer is Toni Basil, who was in Easy Rider the following year and then of course had that horrible Mickey song - she was nearly 40 by then!
I don't know if the film has great hidden depths - I feel that it was simply reflecting the zeitgeist, rather than creating it. For a manufactured band they were very good though.
If you go to a Monkees Concert this summer, you will get to see this first hand! It took the entire audience, myself included, when Davy came spinning out in a white tux! He's not my favorite Monkee, but that was my most favorite part of the concert!
@benhamjoshua I would love to see that. They're coming here (Indy) soon, maybe I'll go. Davey & Mickey are my favorites, Peter's OK, but I don't like Mike Nesmith.
@benhamjoshua It was pretty awesome. I didn't know the song since I haven't seen Head yet, but it was fun top watch Davy Jones dance around on stage. Hell, the entire concert was awesome. For the record, I saw them in Niagra Falls
@benhamjoshua Oh man, was that fun to watch! I just saw them yesterday in Hershey, PA. He isn't my favorite either but boy, did I get a kick out of him twirling around in that white tux with clips of the original video in the back on the big screen.
On the audio commentary of Head, Michael Nesmith says that he volunteered to do this originally. He did take dancing lessons and worked really hard on it but at the last minute the producers used Davy Jones because he was natural song-and-dance man.
I love Frank Zappa at the end! "You've been working on your dancing....it doesn't leave much time for your music. You should spend more time on it because the youth of America depends on you to show the way." Monkees is ze craziest people! ROTFL! "Head" is an awesome movie!

@affectionatepunch and @MarieJane619 Davy was a professional actor from the time he was a child, performing in a UK soap and in the West End in Oliver! as the Artful Dodger. So yes, he has had lots of theatre/dance training. This is also why David Bowie had to change is name professionally. David Jones had already been a working performer for over 10 before Bowie changed his stage name. Bowie couldn't register w/ a union under that name. Bowie's a better last name for him anyway.
Years ago I knew a boy He was his daddy's pride and joy But when the daddy went away It was such a rainy day That he brought out all his toys Now the momma did explain Trying to take away the pain He just couldn't understand That his father was not a man And it all was just a game
@jmlpaulin Musically, it may be better, but I don't care for his singing. I'm waiting to receive The Monkees version of this in stereo, as the sound here is tinny.

btw just a little tid bit of info... after frank zappa passed when they went through his personal studio they found hundreds of songs that werent on any albums he had done; dont know if n e thing has been released yet though....
Judging by his performance here I would guess he has def. had some classical theater training..... not my fav. monkee but def. one of my fav. scenes from "Head"
rest in peace Davy. way too young. Head is one of my all time favourite fims. and this clip is genius.
