  • hi, may i ask how you attached the discs to the drive shaft of the turbine with such precision? Are the discs simply welded on or did you custom bore the entire disc/shaft assembly out of a single piece of metal or did you use a shaft with some sort of screw grooves so you could screw on the discs? thanks

  • @johnshepherd2011 The disks and spacers and individually stacked on a shaft that runs the same size throughout the assembly. The disks start at a locking collar midways on the shaft inside the housing. The shaft has been thread at the end to secure the disks and spacers.

  • @tinkerman01 Hello I am very interested about this type to pump and i'll like to build my own. I'll need to make a compact pump to push water min 10psi and min flow of 10L/min which seems extremely easy with this type of pump. Though i don't know where to start, and i have many questions on your video. How much is the input shaft speed? How much is the spacing between the disks for them to work for water fluid? Does the input diameter has to be bigger than the outlet diameter? +etc Thanks:)

  • @St0RM33This style pump really likes the high rpm, it preforms best the faster it spins,there is stalling out like a vane style pump. The testing with the 1.5inch model using water resulted the best pressure to rpm factor using a .020 disk spacing. The input rpm varied up to 19,000. The pump did not like rpm under 5k,but my 3.5 model runs at 3500. You will need more rpm for a smaller disk. Input diameter needs to be close to 50% of the disk dia. Make large ports that stay within the input dia.

  • @tinkerman01 thanks so much for the info. probably a size like the one on this video will be ok for me. though i have only 100-500rpms input so i'll have to implement a step up gearbox around ratio 1:50 However this was the latest version of your pump? Because i saw one which it is like the original tesla design with two outlet ports, and 2 piece housing instaid of 3. But i fell it is very easy to construct the housing on a lathe.

Can you recommend some theoretical/practical resources that i should start researching?   • @St0RM33 This was my very first pump. The other update is the current design. The thinner the disk the more you can get in the housing. If you have any experience with a lathe you can make one. Nozzle design is determined by your application. Not sure what you need to research, I just applied my common knowledge with some trial and error. If you only need 10psi using 500rpm maybe this pump isn't for you. Maybe research other pump designs like gear or conventional pumps.

  • @tinkerman01 thanks. I will have about 0.8Kw of input power, so i it would be more than enough for my application. Though it's just a fun project, not something that i would use constantly. It is just the only motor i have in my hands so i'll have to use a gearbox to make it work;p

The Georgia Institute of Technology is a Southern university covering every aspect of the sciences, architecture, engineering, management, business and humanities. Many of the people that attend and graduate with honors have southern accents. VT, VPI, Florida, UGA, UT, Clemson, Duke, The Citadel, Tulane, Rice, Vanderbilt and many others. So if you are not saying it to bash Mr. Tinkerman's accent, then why are you saying it?

  • This looks like expensive machined parts. If you made this, what modifications did you need to do, and which parts?

    I'm also curious as to what the advantages and disadvantages of this device is. I've never heard of this type of displacer in my 3 years of college, and year of work in sanitary food processing industry. I can only assume it's just a sort of novelty/hobby thing as opposed to practical.

  • Really nice metal working. I was thinking when i saw your art work, is it possible to use some realy old harddisk with lots of plates to vacuum items? Like a airpump?

    The two problems i see :

    1) the RPM is low because its old (2000 rpm);

    2) It needs to keep on spinning while not connected to a pc.

  • If you had made two, you probably could have used one as a turbine and one as a pump, run the drive turbine on air, and pump water with the pump side turbine.

    I was suggesting that he make a pneumatic water pump, I do like this design over a lot of the polycarbonate or acrylic ones I've seen. It's fairly well made.

  • so you used compressed air, to spin a turbine.... put it on a mini moto or a min quad bike, with a centrefugal clutch, and insted of a fuel tank have a cylinder of air holding 6bar pressure.... that should be fun for about 5 mins. let me know if you do

  • It's not fake. It's the frame rate of a low quality HD cam you are seeing. A Tesla pump hooked to a die grinder will move a stupid amount of water for such a little pump. Nice try. Carpetbagger.......

    This may be a stupid question, but since I don't know much about these, I'll ask anyway.

    It seems like having dual ports nearly doubled the flow rate, so could the same be done in reverse.

    By this I mean could you supply 2 feeds of compressed air to the ports and have it spin twice as fast, or at least reach max rpm twice as fast, and be able to handle a larger load?

    Lastly, if increasing the number of ports increases flow, what is the max you could have.

  • Yes if using compressed air you increase the number of nozzles it would increase the torque at the shaft. The max RPM would be determined by the nozzle velocity.

    Secondly, I am not sure at what point you max out flow from the number of ports. I have thought about a 4 port design just for giggles. Its not as much about the number of ports as it is the cross sectional area that the water has to flow from.

  • Hmm, makes sense, so you could probably achieve the same result by making the ports larger so that they have a straight path to the discs/gaps?

    If that is the case, then I wonder if having a square port would be beneficial so that the flow is equal across each disc?

    In any case, good work on the prototype, can't wait for what you come up with next.

  • Yes, The bearings are sealed no water or fluid can inter into the bearing section.

    how did you seal the shaft so that the pressure stays inside is it just the bearings? im thinking about making one that is about 10in diameter with steam flowing through it to use it as a motor

  • High quality work and great results. I made a Tesla turbine from machhined aluminum several years ago, but was interested in air compression. Couldn't find a motor fast enough to spin it for good results. Mine was over 2" dia. -- probably too big, and I didn't think of driving it with an airmotor like you did. Great job! Makes me want to start experimenting with mine again.

  • bodkin, the discs are spun and the fluid clings on to them at a point, but anyways the fluid it pushed out towards the outer most point. Since the fluid will take the path of least resistance it flows through the outlet.

    You might want to read about how a centrifugal pump works before you post comments like this.

    I'm using the die grinder to turn the disks that are connected to a shaft that is connected to the die grinder. There is no secret here!

  • The disks are nothing more than 1.5inch fender washers sold at any hardware store. I put slots but you can just drill holes near the shaft.

  • yes it will self prime. Mostly depends on how far it has to pull from before it reaches the pump. If it's over a couple feet I use a check valve.

  • The Tesla pump supposedly will not explode when you kink the hose or run it dry and will pump volatile liquids.

  • Question, you show that the pressure reaches 20 psi when there is one port on the housing... what pressures are aquired with when the second port is added? it obviously increases the flow but i'm just wondering how much pressure is in each of the two lines.

  • Pressure remains the same with one port or two. 20psi was at about 9000rpm.

  • this pump is only good for a water mover, what kind of suction/lift in ft is it capable of if any.

    also the die grinder spins at 10000-15000 rpm, what if you slow it down to 1500 rpm?

  • This pump will pump water or oil, just about anything. I have been pumping 30w oil up a 1inch pipe about three feet with no problem. Doesn't like the slower rpms but still pumps. Keep in mind that its only a 1.5inch disk.

  • Not sure if anyone is selling tesla pumps. Run a search on tesla turbine there is some information out there. Try Tesla Engine Builders Association.

  • yes you sure can. I have been using this pump as a barrel pump for moving oil from a 55gal drum to another larger tank for a waste oil heater in my dads garage. You could pump just about anything with this pump.

  • Free energy? No "free" energy. A Tesla style pump can be used in any application where a pump needs to be used.

    But your time measurements are way of.

    The second 5 gallon test with the dual port is also 35 seconds - NOT 20..

  • You can stop watch it or use the timer on the video. Either way it's 20sec. There may be an argument for 22sec. The first few secs as I start the die grinder is priming.Watch video timer 6:33-6:53. It doesn't matter to me because those are old numbers. This same pump is flowing 20GPM now.

  • Well sir, I'm not sure if my design would ever make 100psi. It would need much better seals and much closer tolerances. Is it possible? I don't know. Can it make more than 20psi? I'm most sure. I have not done any testing over 20psi do to seal failure.

  • I'm using this as a water pump, tesla made his special nozzels for using it as a motor where the input nozzle design makes a bid difference. It would be a output port when using it as a pump like mine. The size of the port makes a big difference in output flow. This 1.5" tesla pump is capable of alot more flow if I add more ports.

  • Most impressive display of a tesla turbine on YouTube.. ;o) How would a 'multiport' outlet or even no ports, just a large 'snail' type outlet housing so that there is no restriction perform..? Actually, why not get a turbocharger and replace the compressor wheel with a Tesla type?

  • Thanks, I have already looked at a turbo housing. It will not work because it spirals to a thinner deapth. My next build will be with a precast waterpump housing that flows 50gpm with the stock impeller. Can't wait till I get my 22 disk pack installed!
