Very nice video, Bill! I actually tried a method that I learned at cafinish.com with amazing results. I have been getting an awesome finish every time with that guy's method. I was not getting very repeatable results with BLO. Do you ever have trouble getting a really glossy shine?
I've tried this method and find it my favourite way to apply the finish. One question though - i most always end up with a partially cloudy finish once i apply the polish. Any ideas what may be causing this? Trial and error has not presented me a solution yet:(
I had this same problem, but it was remedied by 1) Keeping the applicator rag moving quickly across the piece 2) move the entire length of the piece 3) squeezing the piece while applying CA to generate heat. As William says, not so much heat that it cracks the piece.
I tried your method of applying a BLO/CA finish, and it works great. I got a very high polish finish, and the people who saw it think it's beautiful, especially on Deer Antler. Thank you for posting your video and instructions.

Thanks a bunch for this Video. Im a new turner just started a few days ago. Ive made a few pens now and the first one i used Laquer as im a cabinet maker and its some thing im all to familiar with. Second pen i decided to try this type of finish and for pens i think this makes a much nicer finish. I was not to sure about ca finish with all ive read about it and how fussy it could be but this technique is as easy and made ca finish a breeze.
Great video!! Thanks I am a complete newbie, in fact I just ordered my lathe and chisels. Could you please explain what a CA finish is and maybe what products you use(besides mustard!!) I am trying to do my research before I even start.
Thanks, maybe some day I can make pens as nice as you. Still need a mandrel, any suggestions?
I was going crazy trying to get a ca finish method that worked well. I kept getting cracks at the end of the tubes, or slight fog. I've tried this method the past week on 10 pens and not one of them has had a problem. I don't heat it up as much I do a slight hit with some accelerator every 2 or 3 passes. I paid 12 bucks for the bottle so I'm determined to use it hah. This method works great though thanks for sharing!
Heya Bill. I finally got to finishing stage on 2 sierra's tonight, and decided to try your method. I gotta say, after trying everybody elses CA/BLO finish, yours is the easiest and gives the best results! Thanks!
I love it! I tried it exactly as You suggested and it looks even better than I expected. I've got a new finish. I was going crazy coating with ca, spraying with accelerant then sanding.

I was able to put these tips to practice a few weeks ago. I will never do a BLO/CA finish any other way now. Thanks for posting!

Are you just wanting that long sleeve to get caught in the machine or what?
