so...when setting your compressor, it looks like you changed the threshold to 0db....does this mean that i need to record at a specific level or have my audio peaking at a certain level for that ratio to work?
quick question how do you import vocals onto pro tools from your mic??? im playing with all these in/outs in still not seeing a recording line on pro tools.
hey pro tools is not letting me bounce the song its saying that the file size is too large for the file type to support. Can this be caused by to many plugins?
Hey min1one, if you see this, I'd like to ask a quick question. (I'm a beginner that wants to learn more about Sound Design and you're tutorials have been extremely helpful) On the note of the topic that you bring up at nearly 2 minutes in.
Aside from the risk of clipping audio, is there a reason to not record high and just bring the mix down later? Or does that somehow defeat the point?
yo i need sombodies help ASAP!? When i open a demo song or something else on pro tools, i press play, and i cant hear anything? like nothing at all. The only way i can hear it is b4 i actualy open the demo song and click audiopreview. The sound comes out my speakers that are hooked to my mac. Also i have no monitors or headphones connected at all atm
OK I would greatly appreciate your help. I just mixed my first verse with some compression and EQ. I stacked the tracks with a duplicate but slightly offset-ted it to make it a fuller sound. Absolutely happy with the first verse but now I can't for the life of me match the second verse to sound close to as good as the first verse. Can I copy the compression and EQ to the second verse or what do I do. Thank you so much for your help.
And does all those DeEssers and stuff you used on the lead vocal come with the software, or are they totally different things? Sorry for the stupid question=)
Hey, I've been thinking of starting to record some stuff with my friend. Just for fun, you know, like a hobby. And I was thinking of buying, was it ProTools MP. So will it be enough for recording or do I need anything else? Mics of course but anything else? Please somebody who has experienses reply! Thank you!
I think this isn't too good advice Because one there no set way Of doing things to make you sound Good and two it put hard working Recording/mixing/mastering engineers That have work there whole life to take technical difficulty out And make the artist look better you people did not go to college or understudy so what are you trying to Do
I had no idea that I would be mixing anything because I have a Engineer who does it for me. When I started seeing the Plug-Ins on here I was like I have those. So today I followed your instruction from the API Compressor on down. I must admit my vocals are crispy clean. I been tripping for that last hour no lie. Looking at how 4 Plug Ins in this huge Wave Bundle made my sound so professional. You made a great point in regards to a Paranormal EQ than Graphical EQ! Keep It Up!
Man when I first saw this as an artist I was like man I'll just keep paying to get my stuff mixed. As an independent artist you try to do as much as you can without going overboard. I recently bumped into a guy from Detroit who does big things out in California. So we met on line he told me he could help me with some Plug Ins. He sent me this Waves Bundle in the mail. I already record myself but mixing is monster. I approached like editing video in regards to how long it can take. Part 2>>
i understand all of this, but i am used to Logic, so it would be greatly apprciated n more helpful if you showed wher u are findin the compressor n everything on what plugin since there is like 300
hey wats good iam having a big problem tryna install my pro tools se but my computers saying i atleasr need 1 gb ram but my computer does have it do you think ya got any info on that?
a bros..i use the used the mix....but it only sounds good on the studio monitors, when i bounce and send it to covert and put on a cd as a mp3 it doesnt sound the same why is that!!!
@garry2tone thats because ur not mixing right. the first thing about mixing is how ur listening to it. play other songs through ur speakers and see how they sound. learn how ur speakers sound so u can mix ur music right on them. once u learn how ur speakers sound then you'll learn how to make ur mix sound good on any speaker. ur music will never sound the same on any speaker, but it can always sound good on any speaker if u mix it right. and learn proper engineering techniques.
@GETsSOMEsPANCAKES lol actually I thinks its a pretty good and funny question xD, Because he sound white while talking, but when he sings he sounds black (Trust me its a compliment!)I lol Love his voice! (He's probably black though) =D
Any comments aout the package of the mbox2 with protools LE 8 MXL 990 condenser mic and M1Active usb monitors? Thnking about buying im just starting out with home recording.
@americanidiotm4 first you need to get the beat into mp3 or wave format then open it with pro tools or cool edit pro. then record your vocals while the beat is playing
@PocketsGotBigMoney lmao bro im mad dumb. i figured it aout a few hours after i put the comment on but one last thing. how can i put the finished song from pro tools to youtube facebook or itunes i movie etc....
@americanidiotm4 when you save it on pro tools there should be a file type you can change under the name of the file , like change it to WAVE or MP3 and then juss upload it to soundcloud
Huge question man if you can please answer it ASAP... I just bought the Mbox 3 Mini and I see it uses USB 1.1 Do you know how the latency is on the Mbox 3 mini?? Because before I open the box, I'm thinking about returning it and getting the regular Mbox 3 becuase it has USB 2 which will reduce the chances of having latency. Thanx
@81RichYung well, it does almost everything if we're talking about editing a song, vocals & stuff... you can´t really produce or create songs like in Garageband / Logic Studio / Live / Fl 9 or whatever you're thinking of... it just creates effects and allows you to edit the track you imported but it so pro that no matter how bad you sing, using this software you'll become famous...
Ok, I have one more question. Would I be able to use 2 software programs together and use them while editing. Cuz one software has orchestra sounds and I wanna use them as my background sound wit another software with drums and bass sounds.
@bigjay10 when you are EQ'ing you are equalizing sound frequencies . say there is to much low end in a certain instrument you are recording , well you are cutting out those low freq's .same for mid and high freq's . Now you must do this to prevent something that is supposed to be a high or mid freq (hats, vocals, etc)cutting into the low sound field taking up space for something that is supposed to be a low freq (bass, kick, etc) and on those you would cut high freq's or whtever the instrmnt calls 4
@GwenDUff yes u can. autotune, a nice eq, reverb and delay were used in that acapella, but is the strong autotune that makes the diference, along with the choir
@GwenDUff A lot of R&B/Pop records are mixed in the digital domain. There is practically no discernible difference between me mixing in ProTools vs an Analog board. It all comes down to the skill of the mixer and their ears.
All you need today is a MacBook Pro, good monitors and you are ready to mix a record bro.
@GwenDUff YES, YOU CAN GET TAT EXACT SAME SOUND.. JUST COST TONS OF MONEY IN SOFTWARE.. BUT PRO-TOOLS HAS ALMOST EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO MAKE IT SOUND PERFECT ALREADY PRE INSTALLED.. SO GET PRO-TOOLS WATCH THESE LITTLE VIDEOS AND LEARN HOW TO MAKE IT SOUND GREAT..
how do i get my vocals or a song fairly loud without distortion or giving the listener a headache?( I do hip hop music)Please respond I've been trying to do this for months (embarrassed to say)....
what is mixing and mastering.....and what ds it do 4 the song.....i rap...but i dont no shit adout . mixing and mastering a song...if u could listen 2 my muzic and let me no what it could do 4 my muzic...that would b cool
@LilAliciaCook The API plugin he's using is made by Waves. I don't think any Waves plugins come bundled with ProTools, however, you could get access to a 14 day trial of Waves plugins which should be good for you to mess around with.
@ZuluDaGuerrilla i'll sell u the complete waves bundle for 400 bucks. holla at me. i got logic, final cut, adobe master collection cs4, etc. ALL IS FOR SALE!!!!!!!!!
By the way,, nice singing! lol. I don't sing, but I know it's hard to do acapellas with multiple dubs... You're a good teacher, You explained everything good. I'm a rapper and I'm going to buy either Logic or Pro Tools (mainly ONLY for vocal recording purposes). I liked pro tools at first, but I'm hearing Logic is good. Would you say Pro Tools is the way to go?? and I'm probably gonna get a PC, not a Mac 'cuz i'm soo used to it. Also, do you get a lot of Latency and delays??
@detroitMC313 pro tolls for vocals logic for creating...pro tools is sick for vocals..the user interface i think has been perfectly designed for vocals honestly
@nyakzn18 thanx a lot... yeah Ima probably buy pro tools this week. How do you buy plug-ins??? what kind of plug ins do you have?? Like is there a certain name for the bundle/package
Hey... the compressor you have on you're lead... did you set up the settings (Ratio, Threshold.. so on) yourself, or did you just use a pre-set that it comes with???
does anybody know what would cause my mic to pick up really low when i record? and how i would be able to fix it...im new to this so im trying to get everything hooked up rite and sounding rite
does anybody know what would cause my mic to pick up really low when i record? and how i would be able to fix it...im new to this so im trying to get everything hooked up rite and sounding rite
hey man nice video!!! i have a question how did you get the sound to come out off ur SCREENCAST software from pro tools, being as sound come out of the mbox,003, ect.and not the computer it self??
@120508673 It's a shame to see all these people constantly begging for free free FREEEEEE!!
Not only is it impossible to run Pro Tools without the official hardware, but I have developed a greater respect for the program as well as the plugins that I buy since I actually bought them.
A lot of people work hard to afford this kind of software and hardware, and it isn't right for someone else to get it without earning it.
@120508673 you can't get this program for free...there are ways but its not a good idea ! You will need what is called an mbox...its not just a stand along program...you need something hooked into your computer to run it
@ElPopularVale There's no rule...you will find a lot of "big guys" going that way. Just do what you you like as long as it works, really:). The most important thing to realize is that there is no "go to" presets because it all depends on the actual source, genre, taste...Compressor threshold which is set to -10db (recomended at many forums) will do nothing for your track if your peaks are at -12db...Sometimes ppl don't realize such basic things.
This is really a great video. I plan to purchase a Mac Computer and I wasn't sure if to get Logic or Protools, but this video helps me consider Protools a bit more seriously. I know Protools is a bit more complicated and maybe a bit more costly, because there are so many packages and levels, but this video helps clear the air. Thanks for the video.
I see on your mix track window. that the volume is barely going up the the yellow color. When I record that low and play it after I bounce it the volume is really low. How do I get the volume higher without distortion?
@FlowDeBarrio2004 That's a good question indeed:) Well, with todays 24 bit recordings, you should really track and mix at reasonably low volumes - there's nothing wrong in it! Going that way way will have a nice headroom and let your plug-ins work in their most effective range. I would stay at -6db (peaks) or even -12db for the final mix and then increase the volume at the MASTERING phase by using some nice limiter (ie. waves L2). So limiting is the answer.
I am trying to record vocal (lead, background, etc.) but everytime I go to record either the music will start then stop or the mic will stop being picked up. What am I doing wrong. I've tried changing the H/W Buffer size but that doesn't seem to help
PLEASE HELP I am trying to hook up my yamaha p90 keyboard via midi & pro tools isn't picking it up for some reason. It works with Sony Acid and Reason 3.0 but not w/ pro tools essentials. I am thinking Pro Tools only allows there m-powered keyboards to work but I think that will be very stupid since many people have better keyboards they wanna use so I hope that isn't the case and that its just a simple fix. Please help me!
HAY BROTHER THANKS HELPED A LOT JUST A QUESTION THO'' HOW ARE YOU PE-RECODING ARE YOU USING A REAMP OR ENY PLUGINS WHEN YOU RECORD IN TO A TRACK THANKS
thanks for posting this guy. I've learned a lot. Still trying to figure out somethings but I'm posting some of the stuff I've mixed. Check out my channel and tell me what you think, how I can improve or just discuss mixing techniques. thanks!
@JonathanGardnerTV I'm not entirely sure if you properly know what a loop is..
If you're talking about the harmonies, than you really should record it over and over again because when artificially done it messes the track up and sounds ridiculous. And double tracking gives it a much fuller sound.
@lyndsayiu5 Yes I do know what a loop is. What I mean is, if you record the backing vocals for a chorus (double-tracked and whatever) and you have say 3 choruses in the song, you won't want to do a seperate batch of recordings for EACH chorus!! And so you will want to REPEAT it/loop it almost (as you would a drum loop say in FL Studio) so that you don't have to record the chorus three times -________-
@JonathanGardnerTV Great. I was just making sure. I've seen some dumb comments on youtube :P.
Pretty simple really. Just copy the tracks. I assume you're using a DAW like Pro Tools or Cubase etc. If the chorus isn't on it's own track. Just cut it so it's on it's own part then copy the parts you need and move them to where you want it.
@lyndsayiu5 Lol thanks sorry if my reply seemed a bit rude :P I am currently using Adobe Audition to record and mix (and FL Studio to produce). Thanks though :)
haha i landed on one i saw forever ago, ever since I never tracked my vocals or guitars too hot

Is API in ProTools 8
LilAliciaCook 1 year ago
@LilAliciaCook The API plugin he's using is made by Waves. I don't think any Waves plugins come bundled with ProTools, however, you could get access to a 14 day trial of Waves plugins which should be good for you to mess around with.

Also, do you get a lot of Latency and delays??
detroitMC313 1 year ago
@detroitMC313 pro tolls for vocals logic for creating...pro tools is sick for vocals..the user interface i think has been perfectly designed for vocals honestly
nyakzn18 1 year ago
@nyakzn18 thanx a lot... yeah Ima probably buy pro tools this week. How do you buy plug-ins??? what kind of plug ins do you have?? Like is there a certain name for the bundle/package
detroitMC313 1 year ago
Hey... the compressor you have on you're lead... did you set up the settings (Ratio, Threshold.. so on) yourself, or did you just use a pre-set that it comes with???

how can i get this program for free?
120508673 1 year ago
@120508673 You don't. Pro Tools uses its hardware as a copy-protection. It'll lock when the interface isn't plugged in
Greensmurf 1 year ago
@120508673 It's a shame to see all these people constantly begging for free free FREEEEEE!!
Not only is it impossible to run Pro Tools without the official hardware, but I have developed a greater respect for the program as well as the plugins that I buy since I actually bought them.
A lot of people work hard to afford this kind of software and hardware, and it isn't right for someone else to get it without earning it.

@120508673 you can't get this program for free...there are ways but its not a good idea ! You will need what is called an mbox...its not just a stand along program...you need something hooked into your computer to run it

NOOB ALERT_ you EQ after compression?
ElPopularVale 1 year ago
@ElPopularVale There's no rule...you will find a lot of "big guys" going that way. Just do what you you like as long as it works, really:). The most important thing to realize is that there is no "go to" presets because it all depends on the actual source, genre, taste...Compressor threshold which is set to -10db (recomended at many forums) will do nothing for your track if your peaks are at -12db...Sometimes ppl don't realize such basic things.

thanks, this is so great....now i know what I did wrong with my vocals mixing in the couple of day...thanks for sharing....

FlowDeBarrio2004 1 year ago
@FlowDeBarrio2004 That's a good question indeed:) Well, with todays 24 bit recordings, you should really track and mix at reasonably low volumes - there's nothing wrong in it! Going that way way will have a nice headroom and let your plug-ins work in their most effective range. I would stay at -6db (peaks) or even -12db for the final mix and then increase the volume at the MASTERING phase by using some nice limiter (ie. waves L2). So limiting is the answer.
MyPassionsss 1 year ago
i just got pro tools, its ALOT more complicated than i thought haha

Anyone know how you can loop a vocal chorus - so you don't have to record it over and over again? :(
JonathanGardnerTV 1 year ago
@JonathanGardnerTV I'm not entirely sure if you properly know what a loop is..
If you're talking about the harmonies, than you really should record it over and over again because when artificially done it messes the track up and sounds ridiculous. And double tracking gives it a much fuller sound.
lyndsayiu5 1 year ago
@lyndsayiu5 Yes I do know what a loop is. What I mean is, if you record the backing vocals for a chorus (double-tracked and whatever) and you have say 3 choruses in the song, you won't want to do a seperate batch of recordings for EACH chorus!! And so you will want to REPEAT it/loop it almost (as you would a drum loop say in FL Studio) so that you don't have to record the chorus three times -________-
JonathanGardnerTV 1 year ago
@JonathanGardnerTV Great. I was just making sure. I've seen some dumb comments on youtube :P.
Pretty simple really. Just copy the tracks. I assume you're using a DAW like Pro Tools or Cubase etc. If the chorus isn't on it's own track. Just cut it so it's on it's own part then copy the parts you need and move them to where you want it.
lyndsayiu5 1 year ago
@lyndsayiu5 Lol thanks sorry if my reply seemed a bit rude :P I am currently using Adobe Audition to record and mix (and FL Studio to produce). Thanks though :)

@JonathanGardnerTV No problem.
