hermione and ron always seem to have a slight connection but it wasn't obvious enough to make a real educated guess until the goblet of fire book. This is the book where Hermione wished ron asked him before krum but was mad that he was too arrogant afterwards. This seems to happen a lot following the incident. They don't actual go out in any of the books.

though, in the movies its apparent in the third movie. The books didn't make it as clear until later. However for Harry and Ginny, its apparent in the books ginny has a crush on harry in the second book. Like an extreme crush - she then has a streak of going out with everyone (in order to make harry jealous) however when the movies were being made they didn't catch on to this and left ginny out - a big flaw.

Hermione was a jealous nut? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that it was Ron who decided to make out with Lavender to get back at Hermione for kissing Krum 2 YEARS PRIOR TO THAT. And this was after he had agreed to go to Slughorn's party with Hermione. So as far as I'm concerned, Ron fully deserved the bird attack. And as for Lavender being better suited for Ron? He can't stand her! The only reason he went out with her in the first place was to get back at Hermione.
