  • What a time to be a musician. Progressive rock was taking off and one didn't have to wait five flippin' years to get hold of a new Rickenbacker bass in fireglo!!

  • All bring good points to this conversation - but remember this-" Peter Gabriel has always said their was room for some sort of "re union" -"

    '

Where as "Phil" has always said that because of the "Numbness" in his hand; he

  • is just nit up to playing as well as he could and would have to sing mostly and he thinks this would cause a "Conflict" as "someone would have to sing lead and someone harmony- When "Genesis" first came to stage it was in fact to open the doors of concert band tunes to the rest of the world

  • Tony Banks is THE heart of Genesis.

  • @torquesport a lot of people dont realize that but you are correct,a lot of the material has been written by him mainly and his contributions to the band are endless,on a comical note ive always said that if a atomic bomb would fall onstage he probably wouldn't notice and just keep playing.

  • BEST OF ALL GENESIS=GOD

  • Im 15 I want music to be like this not this (C) bullshit!

  • Peter Gabriel & Tony Banks were the core of the band, school mates in high school, composing music together. They got one of their early home made tapes to Jonathon King, who graduated from the school earlier & who had a massive hit he wrote & sang "Everyone's Gone To The Moon." He was producing bands by then & immediately signed them. He produced their first album "From Genesis To Revelation" which went nowhere but he is credtied in naming the band: he felt they were embarking on something new

  • PETER GABRIEL: Vocals, flute, tamborine

STEVE HACKETT: Electric, acoustic guitars, 12 string guitar

TONY BANKS: Keyboards, electric & acoustic piano, organ, mellotron

MICHAEL RUTHERFORD: Bass, bass pedals, 12 string guitar

    PHIL COLLINS: Drums, assorted percussion

In addition, Tony Banks played 12 string, Peter Gabriel played bass drum & oboe, Paul Rutherford played cello while Collins, Banks, Rutherford added voices, as listed on the album "Nursery Cryme" from which this song is from.

  • Phil did things on the drums back then they haven't figured out yet! Just Awesome, big TY for posting this.

  • thats my last name

  • Great bass line in this piece...

  • anyone interested in knowing the actual beginnings of chamber rock, prog rock, classical rock and it's actual origins needs to listen to the studio recording, check the date it was recorded, listen to the complete album as well as Foxtrot which followed and then have an EKG to make sure the recordings themselves did not destroy their mortal soul.

  • The Banks/Hackett team in one of their earliest yet best efforts. Nice to see Peter Gabriel before his masks and face-paint era (not that they were bad ideas, it's just great to have a record from before then).

  • 6.32 hair stands on end moment !!!

  • @timmo1782 men i know what you mean feel the same

  • Steve's middle solo is with playback, anyway he's kickass!!

  • Intriguing...I thought I heard it all after being blown away by "Dancing with the moonlit knight" but here I hear some very unusual chords and contrapuntos...my musical journey is far from finished yet!

  • Lots would say their favorite member of Genesis would be either Peter, Steve, or Phil, but my favorite band member is Tony Banks. He just gave the band such good flow and melodies to work with. He really shined in the early days...

  • @MegaCrusher99 my favorite member is peter gabriel but i agree with you, tony banks is amazing

  • @MegaCrusher99 I agree

  • Fantastic young, raw talent attempting the almost impossible. It may not be quite perfect, but by Christ, it's magnificent. No other musicians would even dare to perform this piece at that time. Genesis stand supreme.

  • Genesis Six Hours Live 2DVD set still one of Youtube's hottest items, available at Tommygun Video please see our youtube channel for more info, clips, link to web site

  • if you dont like this, then you are way too young. I was there live and they are probably the best band I have ever seen, including the who, stones, yes (although yes is close)

  • this is really boring theres no hook. i like prog genesis too like deep in the motherlode or dance on a volcano but this is just boring collins voice is so much better than gabriels and 80s genesis blowss this shit out of the water

  • @Goodcall118 - Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but c'mon, you're just plain wrong on this one, dude! Listen to it!

  • Funny at 2:23 it sounded like the german "Kuhmist" (cow's shit)'

  • I LOVE how Gabriel and Rutherford are watching the unpredictable Phil, like hawks. He was fairly new in the band. I wonder how many times they had actually performed live at this point. Anyone know? PG obviously digging on PC. It makes me so very, very happy. Funny that they fade out on a photo of Phil....superstar to be.

    Touch me now now now

  • Would it have killed the cameramen to look at Steve Hackett even once during the big guitar part??

  • hell peter is almost a lady here whith that hair cut.cursed hippi style

    nevertheles greatest band of all

  • I dig the cheesy Clockwork Orange looking graphics....

  • 171 likes and 0 dislikes, I am so glad :)

  • @VoooooooDooooooo me too dude, i cant see why anyone can dislike this song its so amazing, i absolutly love this song, hermaphroditus <3

  • @eliteturtle47 Yeap! and Gabriel looks so handsome, I think he is the best in this live ( 1972 belgium )

  • Comment removed

  • no one can disagree the rickenbacker 4001 and 4003 bass was the prog bass icon

    the sound is just amazing

  • This Genesis lineup needs to reunite for a world tour so they can musically kick all of our asses!

  • Comment removed

  • Steve Hackett swiped the only chair in the studio LOL

  • its just ....so ..... GOOD

  • They are like 20-21 years old in this video!? Damn I look like a child compared with them both physically and musically.

  • Hey Pete, I've got your hotrods...I swear they make me play better - thanks

  • What an amazing song. I love it.

The Musical Box is doing The Lamb this fall and apparently are doing a double show with songs that they don't often perform live. Hopefully this will be one of them <3

  • PRICELESS!

  • This lineup was so full of epic musicianship and "anything goes" attitude no way you could ignore them. And if you tried Pete would most likely jump on you in full Batwing costume. I only pray Phil remembers who he is before it's too late.

  • Bought the box set, when I first heard this song I was hooked! Damn Genesis was such a cohesive unit back then.

  • whatever comes 2 steps better than mindblowing..this is it

  • Peter was soo handsome... I love True Genesis (1969-1974).. The Most Creative Music ever!

  • This is so wicked, the True Genesis line up!

  • MrSamuel1414, no, you are not alone on this one. I've known this open secret, about Genesis being the greatest, since early 1974, when, in the wake of Oldfield's Tubular Bells and Crimson's Starless and Bible Black, suddenly there was The Musical Box on my early seventies vestige head FM station, a song already three years old, reaching my absorbent, pricked ears for the first time. One of those pivotal moments of realisation that this is a life-changer...

  • God, look at how young they looked! I enjoyed watching Phil drum, when the camera hit him.

  • God, look at how young they all looked!

  • this is the best they ever did for me anyway

  • This is the band that will be playing for eternity in heaven. hehe.....Greatest music ever written. That is a bias opinion but I do not think I am alone on this one.

  • My FAVORITE album next to LAMB. My parents had good taste... Rock on my friends!

  • What a song composed of skill, imagination and pure brilliance, Thank God that these five musicians came together. This song should be a requirement in all music appreciation classess today....Oh thats right, music hardly even exists today. Thank goodness we all know the score!

  • Notice how this song would NEVER fit into today's 3 minute commercial format. Record producers would not let this song happen nowadays. Its the great dumbing down and commercialization of music in our time. The soul and depth are waning, while pop hooks and sell it with sex are on the rise. I mourn.

  • @rabranch32 Music died about 25 years ago. Fuck you MTV.

  • @rabranch32 Well, Genesis weren't pop music at that time. There's quite a lot of bands with a comparable popularity with beautifully long tracks out there- just think of Archive, Opeth or Porcupine Tree

  • Amazing how new prog bands are trying to reproduce the same sound as Genesis without success

  • This lineup will probably get back together, especially since people are finally beginning to appreciate what early Genesis had to offer.. Apparently there is no bad blood and all parties are keen on the idea and it is just a matter of getting it together...

  • @misterdesade my moms last wish, (she is getting up there now at age 66) she wants to see them one more time, all together, I know it will never happen, but I can still wish, Id fly her around the world, anywhere they were, if they could just do it, for all those fans who have been there since the beginning, I just feel they owe it to them! My mom saw them at the shrine in 74 or 5 in LA doing the lamb, she said it was life changing, and I want my kids to see it!

  • Good job!! :)

    Rock And Hal 2010

Peace and Love, Peace And Love

    From Me In Canada

  • One of te best musical pieces ever made in the Genesis gold years...

  • Genesis was so much better when Phil Collins had hair and didn't sing.

  • @notyetajedi65 its not genesis anymore, they should have had to change their name. My mom saw the lamb live in cali. said it was a life changing experience. She took me to see them live in 78 but of course peter had gone by then. I was 2.lol. thats how to raise a kid PROPERLY!

  • very big, mythical

  • Comment removed

  • im sorry peter's voice did not sound that good back then he sounds like he just hit puberty in this one, dont get me wrong I love Peter gabriel now, but back then the singing was not on point

  • NOT SUPPOSED TO BE

  • Just a great performance! Love 70's Genesis

  • YEAH!!!!!!! THANKS FOR POSTING 2:56 THIS!!!!!!!!

    ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!!

Isn't YouTube beautiful if only after hunting for hours for something worthwhile to watch?

If I could rate this video 1,000,000 stars I would gladly and gratefully!

What supreme musicians! They met in a music academy. I like how Rutherford looks so calm and relaxed. He is a bad-ass bass player!! Tony has the full-sized original Mellotron 1:51 (upper right screen) I have that organ 0:07 It's a Hammond T-200.

    Best of YT!

  • Actually, it's a Hammond T-102...

  • wrong, T-200

  • What Tony is playing in this particular video is actually a Hammond L-122...

  • heavenlly sounds !

  • in the name of god please this line up needs to reunite and tour!!!

  • I KNOW!!

But I really don't think it will ever happen, Peter doesn't seem interested if you watch interviews on youtube he always says the same thing about how thats the past plus he always uses his solo career as an excuse for being busy and it takes him like 5-10 years just to make one album.

I actually think there is a better chance I will learn to time travel after I die and going back in time to watch them then than doing another tour together : (.

  • @whiskeynale69 i could live without phil collins

  • @jayheadj420 - he was the perfect drummer for Genesis (don't think much of his later singing though!)

  • @whiskeynale69 yeah, but sadly phil's ended hi music career, so if they did thed have to get another drumer. It'd still be awesome though.

  • @whiskeynale69 I gladly offer one hand. (The other one is busy playing)

  • @whiskeynale69 not unless they've visited a fountain of youth before... ;)

  • by now it's too late. we're40 years too late.

  • @whiskeynale69 ....It would be the HIGHEST GROSSING TOUR of all time.....Please, please, please before one of them dies! We need it!

  • @whiskeynale69 Especially since they are still alive and capable!

  • @dave21286 Not Phil. He has a problem with his wrists. He did an operation to repair dislocated vertebrae in his neck. The wrists can´t move and his fingers has limited mobility. And he lost the hearing in the right (left?) ear too. But we have Chester Thompson :-)

  • @whiskeynale69 can you put the name of the line up, phill collins, peter gabriel..?

  • PETER GABRIEL: Vocals, flute, tamborine

STEVE HACKETT: Electric, acoustic guitars, 12 string guitar

TONY BANKS: Keyboards, electric & acoustic piano, organ, mellotron

MICHAEL RUTHERFORD: Bass, bass pedals, 12 string guitar

    PHIL COLLINS: Drums, assorted percussion

In addition, Tony Banks played 12 string, Peter Gabriel played bass drum & oboe, Paul Rutherford played cello while Collins, Banks, Rutherford added voices, as listed on the album "Nursery Cryme" from which this song is from.

  • @whiskeynale69 sorry ii dont remember the names are in the video : /

  • @whiskeynale69 awesome things only happen once in the life

  • qué chingona escenografía no mamar

  • There was the Peter Gabriel version of Genesis, and the Phil Collins version. No doubt whatsoever which of the two was genius. Even after almost 40 years, this is just phenomenal !!

  • Bloody hell, how cool was Steve Hackett??

Priceless - still high art, still great rock (and ensemble) music.

  • I must say that much as I respect Steve Hackett, he didn't have a very difficult role to play in Genesis when you compare with what Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Peter Rutherford were doing in terms of music.

  • Well said, most of his melodies were dictated to him from Banks.

  • @MusicStudioTV no doubts for me...! Banks was always behind all!

    ciao e continua cosi!

  • Geniali è riduttivo!

  • what were these guys on? the English were kicking rocks ass back then.

  • Meravigliosi Genesis...

  • Comment removed

  • Geniali!!!

  • This stuff is really deep...

Nursery Cryme e Foxtrot, The Yes Album, Tarkus, In The Court Of The Crimson King e Octopus.

  • Retro Prog............ Nuff Said!!!!!!!!

    Thanks for video .

  • perfect !!

  • Quanti ricordi....

  • Very nice. It brings back pleasant memories for me.
