when they record in studio, vocals are often the last thing you put on, so basicly, you record some things together in order for the others to feel the rhythm of the song when they record, but then they re-record everything individually.
It helps alot to hear the song in the background while you record your instrument, instead of just a metronome ticking.

In the actual recording of the Slipknot Self-Titled album,Mick recorded using a "Jackson Dinky" Guitar.
You can see it clearly in this video.
