lets put this into perspective. pole day used to always be sold out. sold out means no less than 250,000 people. thats more than 2x the attendance of any super bowl, just to see who would start FIRST for the race
Growing up in Indy during the 1960's, We had no professional sport teams of any kind to support. For me & I think I can speak for a lot of other Hoosier's out there. That Theses Golden & Silver age race drivers were our hero's and we were their biggest & greatest fans.
There simply is no other place on earth that has such a power over an individual as Indy does. Whether you are a fan, driver, team member, or grounds worker you know you are some place that is truly special.
CHILLS every time I watch that video. NEVER will I be anywhere else on Memorial Day weekend than at IMS and the Indy 500. I would have to be on my death bed to miss it!! If you've never been.....you HAVE to go.
The first time I went was for pole day in 1973, I was 13, Went just about every year till 1980... Race tickets were actually me and my best friend's BEST graduation presents in 1978... The playing of Taps on Raceday still gives me goosebumps.
You know, I thought of something. If Tony Hulman never bought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, there would have been a housing development up where the raceway is now today. Im glad it wasn't turned into that. The Indianapolis 500 and the Speedway make magic to everyone who comes. It has become a world racing event, and it will never die. Make sure you put visiting the Speedway on Indy 500 day on your bucket list before you die because it is an amazing experience. I can't wait to go back!
Very Kitsch!!!! But Indy is a grear race of the world. This event is behind to Monza, Monaco and Le Mans like one these competitions in the world's autoracing...
The thing that sticks with me is how different this race is in person as compared to watching it on TV. On TV you get absolutely no sense of the speed they are traveling along with the noise. I started going in 2008 and this will be my 4th year and I have sworn to myself that I will never miss going to the Indy 500 ever.
Nice video! I teach at Marian University in Indianapolis which is just a few miles away. I drive by this place almost every day. Once I was lucky enough to do a lap around it in my Corvette a few years ago. As another user said "unless you experience it you cannot understand it." The 'awe' never wears off!
I'm actually close to tears watching that. Trying to organise getting out to Indy from the UK for the Centennial 500, now determined to make it.
I think the Tony George quote is a little out of place, he was part of "The Split" which pretty much let NASCAR become the number 1 US motorsport by default and could have killed off Indy. I'd much rather read a quote from the likes of AJ Floyt, or 1 of the Unsers.
@szyd48185 no nascar simply funded the series through the split. thanks! nascar saved indy - for indy. btw nascar should be worried about nascar at this point, the bigger they are....
If you have ever been to the Speedway... you understand. You understand completely what an astounding experience it is to drive through the tunnel at Gate 2 and suddenly be completely surrounded by a hundred years' worth of racing history in one immaculately-maintained facility, with not a blade of grass out of place.
I compare it to the experience of walking through the main entrance of one of the great cathedrals of Europe, as it imbues you with the same sense of awe.
I travelled specially there last week and visited the speedway. Since I was a kid I wanted to visit, and my dream came true now at 61 years old. I can't describe the emotions I felt, it was an exhilarating feeling. That day the NASCAR guys were running and giving rides for pay to the visitors. Best day in many years! Long live the Indy Motor Speedway!!
Just renewed my tickets!! I am like so of the others here. This video typifies what Indy means to all of us fans. No one can understand it unless they go to "The 500", it is an experience like no other!!!!
Sid Collin...the most magical voice ever to grace radio airwaves...still gives me chills to hear: "Now stay tuned to the greatest specticle in racing".
Yes, I've been to Indy several times "IN THE DARK". Watching this video gave me "goose bumps" once again. There is nothing like Indy, on race day, in the world. Every race fan should experience the roar of engines and the brave men who haved raced there! It is something that 'YOU WILL NEVER FORGET".
This thing should be divided up into about four commercial spots by IMS and be aired everywhere. These guys are crying the blues about ticket sales when they need to be doing some ads actually promoting the Speedway and the race.
This was a fantastic Centennial era promo. Good promo. in general.
Scott Golladay - This year will be my 23rd Indy 500 and I can honestly say I get goosebumps when I drive under the track and pull up to the museum. And if you have never been to the track at night when they have the balloon glow then I highly recommend it. It was incredible.
i think the saddest day of my life will be when i'm old and broken down and i realize that i won't see the next indy 500. that realization will probably finish me.
@penske13 no worries P....my dad went to every one he was alive for from the age of 21...passed in his sleep...and the tradition lives on!!!! see you in spirit on Sunday?
does anybody have a recording of the Sid Collins Radio Broadcasts? I'm seeking the opening and closing theme song "The 500 - the greatest race in the world"
If i ever have the change to travel to the USA,this would be one of the main reason. What Indianapolis is for America,is (at least in my opinion)Spa Fracorchamps for Europe. Two of the most excating tracks in the world with a big history, almost mythical.Only 3 weeks to go for the f1 at Spa...YES...:-)
that would've been great if that video wasn't so much like a movie trailer. more documentary-like approach would've been more respectful to that great arena of motorsports. in my opinion, which doesn't count :)
NASCAR boys were testing yesterday. I I live close enough to the track to hear them. Still wish F1 had stayed, maybe they will be back. Since 1973 I have been to 28 Indy 500's, 8 Byard 400's & all F1 races. Long live The Brickyard!
I listened to the Indy race in the 50's. I remember "at the end of 10 laps or 25 miles", then we paid for and went to closed circuit TV, the ABC's Wide World of sports with the Late Jim McKay to today's Indy and I still get chills when "Back Home in Indiana and the balloons and the famous words "Ladies and Gentleman start your engines. What a great memory that I will never forget.
God, how I miss Tony Hulman utter those four famous words, "Gentlemen, start your engines!" Nobody has ever done it with such reverence, and nobody ever will.
I have been to 30 straight Indy 500s. It was looking like I would not get to go this year, but after watching practice all week and qualifications today, there's no way I'm going to miss it! 31 straight years and counting!
My father took me as a teen and several years after. Dad has since passed on but his spirit lives on in the hallowed grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Now I carry on the tradition, taking my son to the one and only greatest spectacle in racing, joining dad in the stands.
The history, the sweat, blood, and tears are felt when you see that place for the first time. The struggles, the triumphs; it's the most hallowed ground in motorpsorts.
Wonderful video. This race is the ONLY 500. If you have never gone to this race by all means before you pass off this earth please experience the Indianapolis 500
Andy Graves was an engineer who headed up the Target/Ganassi effort when Montoya won the 500 back in 2000. He said, "The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is more exciting when it's empty than any other racetrack when it's full." He is SO RIGHT! Every lap of the Indy 500 is racing history. The only reason to miss the 500 is a death in your family--your OWN death.
Indy gets under your skin, the issues go away, it becomes part of you, unless you experience it, you cannot understand it.
People don't understand that I know exactly where I will be every Memorial Day weekend, now! Got a party planned for Memorial Day 2020? Sorry, I cannot make it, I will be at the '500'.

not bitter, I just don't get sucked into the spec crap wagons they try to pass off as race cars. Have fun watching the balloons and listening to Gomer.
Man, that gave me chills. It brings me back to when I went there in '03. It just left me in awe. I just couldn't believe I was there. After many years watching, I finally got to be there. *wipes tear*
The great thing about the Speedway is that they are good citizens of the Cities of Indianapolis and Speedway. Unlike lots of pro sports franchises, they don't always have their hand out wanting taxpayer money. Truly a class operation.
