  • DAAMMN thats sneaky sneaky.

  • Im sooooo glad you guys are back!!!!

  • Rener and Ryron rock... pure and simple.

  • beautiful

  • Best part is,if their arm escapes, switching to the other arm is extremely effective and quick,as well as the variation to get them into a triangle if their arm escapes as well.

  • 2:23 to 2:28 is what always happened to me before I watched this video when I went for my arm bars. Thanks for uploading!

  • the detail on the shoulder is key Rener is the best instructor I have ever seen, he really explains things right

  • To answer your question, try it with someone competent in BJJ, you will find you are more concerned about stopping your arm being snapped than punching....try it

  • Hey guys I have a question, can anyone help me..I have a problem of getting punched in the face while I hook my arm on the leg, what do I do?

  • This technique is meant to be done quickly. The only time you grab the leg is to get the angle and lock the legs, so it only takes a split second. After that you can go back to extending the hips but at the same time, if you have to, worry about his other hand throwing punches and block those with your free hand. More than likely extending this hips should put enough pressure on his elbow to have him worry about that rather than throwing punches.

  • thanks for the tip

  • @Badsinger96826 I don't believe you have ever practiced the technique. If you have, then you would know that a certain principle comes into play. The person in the top position has a choice, punch or grapple, but he can't do both at the same time. If he chooses to punch he can't defend the armbar without giving up base or ignoring the attack.

  • so what should I do then? tnx

  • You execute the movement, if you are punched chances are it won't finish you. You should expect to get punched at some point during a streetfight...that's what happens in a fight.

  • Is there a way I can get away with using this technique without getting punched? I hate getting punched in the face. Or maybe I lack speed thats why I get punched.

  • Anyone that questions this move should go to Torrance and talk to Rener and Ryron about it. I'm sure they'll demonstrate the technique for you.

  • Its a self defence armbar. To many teachers get caught up in the sport jiu jitsu vs jiu jitsu fighters or mma. Some people arnt intrested in fighting in a cage.

  • if the teacher teaches the student how to perform armbars against other jiu jitsu players or well someone to know how to avoid defend a person that can keep the posture on the guard not giving the arms like white belts.

would more easy to catch punks in a self defense matters

  • Also Hong Man Choi

  • for this technique - couldnt you just trap ONE arm between your legs and pull your body to the side and backwards to get the armbar? it seems like it would be somewhat difficult to get the armbar off if you are still on the bottom trying to lift your hips straight up

  • if you're going to trap one arm you might as well go for a triangle.. doing it the way you said makes it more likely for you to get passed

  • It's much easier to lift your hip straight up. I think Fedor vs. Hong Man Choi demonstrates it really well

  • I think I'm starting to understand what you're getting at. If you try to roll backwards and to the side there's a very high chance of you getting stacked and folded in half. If your opponent is stronger this is the move that has higher success. If YOU'RE stronger, then do whatever the hell you like I guess lol...

  • well what im saying is that you can just throw one leg over the arm you want to trap, and turn to the side for the armbar... but if you mess up they can pass and possibly take back control... its not safe, but i think it would probably be easier than the method showed on this video

  • you never just throw the leg over. if you arent pivoted to the side of the person dont force the leg get to the side and get the head out of the way jui jitsu is about proper technique dont just do a armbar or and submission without proper technique

  • I've also used the mata leao to break up a fight,....awesome techniques that really work in real life situations. I'm a "lifer" to learning gracie jiu jitsu.

  • The Gracie Family are great teachers. These guys are crazy they perfected Jiu Jistu and its a great technique

  • my very jiu jitsu lesson was in hartford,ct with ryron gracie and let me tell you this kid knows he's shit. i love the sport so much that i ended up joining the academy and i can't wait for he's next visit. great teacher.

  • jiu jitsu has saved my ass more than once wen i go to back yard concerts.

i had to throw this crazy dude to the pavement and hold him down wit a mata leao a few weeks ago!!!!

  • Apparently the Gracie's are superb teachers too. You were very thourough and detailed which makes it a whole lot easier to learn. It helps when subtle moves (like the arm on the neck) are explained. THANKS!!!!

  • these videos help my man

  • For all the people talking down on this move. It's a very basic and preliminary armbar designed to be used against your regular street thug or moron who doesn't know jiu-jitsu. It's not made for a knowledgeable mma fighter or someone with some jiu-jitsu sense. I love how some tool was mentioning this move in correlation with a mma fight. Again, you can ask Ryron or Rener yourself and they will explain the move to you personally.

  • Ude Gatame

  • this is a bad move i dont like it one bit not the way hes teaching it there are way better variations of the armbar from the guard even against street thugs like you say ljsjiujitsu why not just teach the good techniques?

  • I used this move when defending ground and pound against an opponent ^_^

  • i've tapped trained opponent's in mma fights with this arm lock

  • Fedor used this against Mark Coleman and Hong Man Choi before

  • I love this guy, he's a tad annoying and bossy with his brother and seems unnaturally chipper, but he's really cool, and knowledgeable. Seems like a nice guy to train under.

  • Or on top of *wink

  • I took my first bjj lesson today. It's fun

  • That´s nice, but as he pointed out himself, it has the drawback of the possibility of escape for the opponent. I think it´s better to aid the hip movement by placing your sameside foot on his hip, so you can also place weight on his back with the other leg while having both hands free to hold on to his wrist

  • Yah Ricardo Arona displayed that variation in a seminar (video's on youtube) but that kind of move works very hard against a guy very much larger than you because his muscles tend to make a small person's body not fit for that move you know? There's more situations for this move in a real street fight imho

  • This is an amazing technique, thanks for this. =] I just have a question:

Is there any way to restrict the other arm (assuming this were a street fight) so that they can't punch you with it?

  • If their intent was to punch you with the other arm, then the forearm across the throat would nullify his leverage down to almost zero..... Also, by cupping the dude's shoulder, that'll also throw off his ability even more.

  • Very informative.

  • i wonder if these gatame techniques still work without the protection cup... i tried it and squeezed my balls:)

  • it's just a matter of practice and care for your balls man

  • lol tightening your heels to your butt should decrease the chance of that happening ^_^

  • excellent technique, variations work a treat.

  • The last variation is the best, when you grab the arm.

  • Excellent teaching.

  • Although you learn them as a unit, no technique is self contained, they need to be spiced up a little and disguised. Grappling is like chess, making combinations to fool your opponent. This video demonstrates good technique, now instead of saying it won't work because this or because that, get your ass on the mat and practice to merge the 4 or 5 body movements required into a single reflexive motion.

  • Exactly, learn all the moves without complaining. That's what makes fighting so much fun, every fight is different and not all moves will work all the time. That's why there are so many.

  • Sliding in your arm isn't a problem at all. In any case there are other variations. You can spin yourself by placing a foot on their hip.

  • any move is possible or it wouldn't be a move

  • I think is very good ! But can he punch me? But I think is worth to take punch and exchange for arm break.... but if he is very very big and strong do you think that punch will knock me out?

  • no but if you ask the question, I doubt you would keep concentration. you have to work on that..accepting punches. Sadly, few schools of jiu jutsu I saw work on that.

  • Or for another take on the subject, you could tire the dude out while he's in your guard so there's no chance of him having strength left to knock you out...

  • this move actually does work when this is not the first move u make when the opponent is in ur guard. bring ur opponent in close first so he doesnt pound that crap out of ur face. then perform the move it works a lot better in a surprise moment then trying to perform the armlock straight out.

  • And ironically enough, that surprise moment happens the most common in a real street fight

  • like i said this move won't work in a real fight. look what happened to royler gracies when he didn't defend from strikes while at the bottom. got knocked unconscious and mouth piece rolled out of his mouth. it all happened in less than 5 seconds. stick your arm in there and you're a dead man.

  • You're so ignorant, Royler got knocked out from a knee to the face while trying to get up, not while defending ground and pound......

  • You talking out of your arse, moron. Thats what the element of suprise is all about and he has a tight grip, what are you a black belt in shit-jitsu!

  • this move won't work. he will slide his arm out as soon as you put your left forearm on his neck. also, if he sits on your right arm with his hamstrings you are in big trouble.

  • Do you have any grappling knowledge at all? If he sat on his arm he'd simply pull him over onto his back and complete a juji-gatame. Do you ever watch the UFC or Pride--variations of this armlock have finished dozens of matches. Royce tapped out Kimo and Dan Severn with this type of armlock and they both outweighed him by over 80 pounds.

  • it will work if the opponent is a complete newb. it's hard enough to slide your arm under the guy's hamstrings in the first place. if you've sparred before then you know the guy on top will not spread his knees open for you like that. now imagine the guy is trying to pound your face with his fist. you're telling me you're going to try to grab his knee with one arm? he'll smash your face into pulp.

  • and like you said, other armlocks work, but this particular armlock will not - unless the guy is a complete newb. think about the risk you are putting yourself in when you try to snake your arm in there like that. if you get your arm trapped in there, the guy will pull out of your weak lock and go to side control.

  • Auto66774 you must be a newb because evey technique can be countered or might not always work.example dont shoot in he might sprawl, dont punch he might block maybe you missed that lesson

  • sorry Auto66774, you're outnumbered. don't ever sit on anything in jiu-jitsu.

  • Lol you only run into the danger of that if the dude is sitting up right posturing to take away all your leverage. When he's in that position definately don't go for ANY submission let alone this armbar, your priority will be to break down his posture then. If you broke down his posture then the situation to apply this move will come out more often and the danger of him stacking you/passing/pulling out will significantly decrease. Remember, you do the move when you CAN not when you want to.
