Thanks for the video very helpful .I got some point . I hope it work for me case I'm having trouble with streeing when doing this manouevre.A simple question how much should I steer(to the left & right) when I'm going reverse it is a little bit confusing ?
Just because there is a crossroad doesn't mean you give it a dislike. He said sorry in the video and he isn't some professional isn't he? Atleast he told us and great vid btw!
Or just look for a decent driveway and ACTUALLY safely turn your car around .. what the F**K, if i ever see a car reversing on a crossroad i'd start panicking :s
But all that aside, it's a good attempt at explaining the manouevre. Good for a pupil brushing up prior to a Test, not so good for beginners, as it assumes that pupils understand the 'reference point' and 'effective observations'. Explaining how to identify the 'point of turn' and perhaps emphasising the importance of the 'Blind Spot' check would improve it. But then it depends on the level of pupil this is aimed at....
As has been pointed out already, this is a manoeuvre that does not represent real world driving. Because if you wanted to turn the car around, you would only reverse far enough into the side road so that you have enough room to turn right, back in the opposite direction. Why would you ever need to reverse 4 car lengths? Anal. A bit like not bringing the car to a COMPLETE stop at a STOP sign, even though you can see it is safe to proceed! If it's safe, what's the problem?
I heard you will not be asked to use a crossroad like in your picture, so why do you not make reference to observing into the opposing road (not grade 6 then are you?). If I use my door mirror, am I still making effective observation; and in order for observation to be 'effective' how do I respond to what I see?
Even though if you pass your written test make sure you have a second look at it once again. I remember, I made a huge mistake of not moving to the right for slower moving vehicles, just because i didn't remember.
there are few free Canadian websites to practice driving test try icandrive.ca
why the hell would any1 ever need to learn this? and why so ridicously detailed, im 17 and learning how to drive, ive never taken any driving lessons hours, have been driving for a year only with my dad and i allready know how to drive and all the rules
iv got my test tomorrow this is what i failed on the first time i hit the curb i was way to nervous im my examiner was a bitch lmao hopefully i pass tomoz
What is the point of this manoeuvre? It's like the most dangerous thing one could ever do on the road o.o it's much easier and safer to do a 3 point turn like the rest of the world does.
When I knew I had to do this thing in my UK driving test I was sincerely very shocked. English people pay attention to safety on the road by making you look at your mirrors every 2 seconds and then they ask you to do this... it has no sense.
this maneuver is gay. no1 use this -.-. i had to do this for the test and the douchbag failed me on it cause i didnt or somthing. and i looked like everywhere
Keep the clutch around the biting point, and wear it out in double quick time, yay!
On another note why do a LOT of people do 3 point turns these days for pretty much anything? Why not just drive around the block and dont hold everyone up.
This is quite ideal for students who are taking there lessons to watch sample videos revising the skills given from there instuctors, and slowly learning bit by bit from each lesson remembering the basics to then proceed on the next step. I have also just done my third driving lesson today and felt it has gone well so far but may need more practise before I go to do my theory. I find it easier for me to continue revising and watching the videos to be prepared for each lesson for any questons.
You know how before you do the turn, after every car length you have to keep looking around? Each time you do this, do you have to put the handbreak up each time?
No, you should not apply the handbrake (generally the handbrake should only be used when a 'pause becomes a wait). You do not need to pause the car when you make these observations if you are confident and proficient. It is a good idea though to do so, certainly in the early stages.
Love the irony of this video - first thing you say is make sure it's Safe Legal Convenient, and then your diagram shows it at a crossroads! DSA would not be happy with that!
@mrkfowler The SLC is for pulling over to the side of the road - look again, you will see that is what is said. As mentioned in comments below, the crossroads diagram was an error - I am a driving instructor not a graphic designer!
This was very helpful, thanks. It pretty much went over what my instructor has taught me but it's good to watch these type of videos to refresh my memory.
I have my driving test on Wednesday and I am pretty nervous!
Ya.. that's not legal in Canada.. pretty sure not in the states either.... it's illegal to back through an intersection, never mind back and turn..just an fyi..
And what's with the 3 car lengths past the actual turn?
Ya.. that's not legal in Canada.. pretty sure not in the states either.... it's illegal to back through an intersection, never mind back and turn..just an fyi..
And what's with the 3 car lengths past the actual turn?
omg I just started my driving lessons and damn! manual is so effin' hard! The car shut down TWICE in the middle of the road. I didn't understand exactly why hahaha and whenever I braked, apparently it was really hard that my teacher almost hit head. Gawsh, I'm going automatic now
all my lessons i used the tip of wiper blade as my distance from curb marker, However it rained on my test passed but i think it might have bin a bit of luck at that point!
@DollarBillUK Most of what the instructor told me was useless BS for me. What helped me, was to try to imagine where the car was. Imagine yourself pulling out of that side road and turning left into the main road, except you're doing it backwards. Memorize the layout of the road as you drive past it, and make sure you find a good reference point. (The reference point is something in the road that would be exactly behind you after you're aligned correctly.)
DO ( NOT PAUSE ) THE CAR AT ANY STAGE when you are reversing back LOOK TO YOUR RIGHT before you start to swing in to the other road and rember the slower YOU do it the longer YOU have to make GOOD YOUR MISTAKES ( DO NOT HIT OR MOUNT the path go forward and then take it back take the blue mark ITS not a fail
Do pause the car if there is a car comming behind which is a danger though!
I do agree with doing the reverse at a steady pace rather than stoping and starting all the time. The stopping and starting only allows hazards time to appear. And a lack of flow makes the pupil confused.
My instructor said it's best to pause a few times during the manoeuvre so that the examiner cannot say that you didn't look enough. If you stop a few times it pretty much guarantees that you won't get a fault for lack of observation.
If you are in a one-way street you cannot drive around the block. I personally choose to reverse around the corner before 2 of my lessons a week because of where they live
thanks for this useful upload most driving videos on youtube are as per American left hand drive system. The UK system is same as the one in my home country India
oh my god! that was sooo helpful, ive got my test in like 10 hours!! and i cant sleep!!!! im sooo nervous!! its only my reverses that im worried about!!!
absolutley fantastic vid. i never know how much steering to put on/off and that makes me snake around and also when the point of turn is and this shows u...any more?
thank you! this has been fabulous - a real help. great vid. i wish i had you as an instructor, i really worried about this manouevre and the reverse parking between the 2 white lines.
If in your test you get this manoeuvre, at any any time can you correct yourself by going forward then carry on reversing? or would this be a failure?
Nope not a failure. As long as you don't go drastically wrong e.g. the other side of t he road, then as long as you correct yourself properly (full observation before you move forward/backward) then that is not a problem. Even the best drivers make mistakes - the key/skill is to correct them but properly. Hey, you can even touch the kerb and that is OK (touch under control and not ram up it!).
all that you are trying to show/prove is that you can handle the car in a competent and SAFE manner - the emphasis is on safe. You can have a scrappy looking manoeuvre but do it in a safe manner and you will be OK. The other way around is a no, no!
Ok thanks a lot, much appreciated! My test is in 3 weeks and i'm stressing over it already. 1 o clock in the morning and i'm up watching learner driver videos and studying maps of farnborough & aldershot lol
That's not far from me - I think I will stay in, in 3 weeks time! :-0 Seriously, don't stress. Concentrate on 'is it safe?' and you will be fine. That is the key.
Oh really where are you from? I live in aldershot and go to college in farnborough so i know both towns quite well luckily. And yes please do.. one less car on the road could be the difference in me passing and failing lol I'll try not to stress too much but i really really really want to pass.
failed. i had a few minors and by the end of the exam he took me on a roundabout where i forgot to signal and resulted in a serious fault. so wtvr u do ppl ,dONT forgt to signal right THEN left at the chosen exit.
I never even took the test, i forgot the second part of my driving license, so i got to re apply, and i'll be doing than at the end of the month, what a pisser though lol
nah i only got 8 minors but roadworks on this roundabout threw me off so I was in the wrong lane. rebooked for end of the month. you feel so much more confident second time around so for all you nervous first timers (of driving tests...) don't let the nerves get to you and it's really not the end of the world
Haha that's the point i think, yeah it is dangerous, but at end of day you're only doing it to show examiner how good you are at reversing, there's a lot of things you don't do when you pass, like checking your mirrors all the time and putting your handbrake on everytime you stop at junctions etc and i can't remember the last time i used push-pull steering
After being taught to drive safly why do you think you shoud drive diffrently after passing your test?
Anyway you don't need to put the hanbrake on at a junction for a breif stop, the key thing is NEVER to let the car roll back. If you drop mirror checks what affect are you having on other road users DO YOU KNOW?
Ofcourse its not dangerous if you do it correctly!
Yeh I was thinking that! I've been driving for 11 years now, and not once have I needed to do this manouevre. And as others have said, it is quite dangerous as well, which makes it all the more ridiculous!
Yeah when video hits 1m 03seconds... this is when you decide if a signal is necessary and before you move off do a good right shoulder check.. Trust me on this if you don't YOU WILL FAIL...!!!
You forgot to say, before you move off to complete this minouvere, you should decide whether or not a signal is necessary and do a good right shoulder check for motorbikes and other vehicles. You need to re-do this video stating this in my opinion. You cannot just move off after being told to stop in a convenient, safe and legal place. These checks must be made or the learner will X - FAIL - X
Ipfvr6, you may actually be asked to do a reverse round the corner on the day of the test. I'll advise you practice & stop being so rude & arrogant. And stop spoiling this for those of us who are really serious about driving.
Thanks to the people who put this video together, it's the most accurate so far, forget the others, this is the best!!!
heh all this talk about cross roads, last lesson i had, my instructor made me do it on a cross road and said that the added junction is just another thing i should be observing. it was in an industrial area in the morning but did have to stop a lot more because of cars coming out of it. should i tell him don't ask me to do it there? made me panic a lot more than usual.
Bad video, bad advice this manouvre should never be performed at a crossroads as illustrated, no driving examiner would EVEr do this manouvre in such a plac.
Very useful.

Ok thanks a lot, much appreciated! My test is in 3 weeks and i'm stressing over it already. 1 o clock in the morning and i'm up watching learner driver videos and studying maps of farnborough & aldershot lol
Thanks again!
Emcey23 2 years ago
That's not far from me - I think I will stay in, in 3 weeks time! :-0 Seriously, don't stress. Concentrate on 'is it safe?' and you will be fine. That is the key.
musosmiffy 2 years ago
Oh really where are you from? I live in aldershot and go to college in farnborough so i know both towns quite well luckily. And yes please do.. one less car on the road could be the difference in me passing and failing lol I'll try not to stress too much but i really really really want to pass.
Emcey23 2 years ago
You spelt manoeuvre wrong in the video. Around 2:25. That is all

standaman666 2 years ago
nah i only got 8 minors but roadworks on this roundabout threw me off so I was in the wrong lane. rebooked for end of the month. you feel so much more confident second time around so for all you nervous first timers (of driving tests...) don't let the nerves get to you and it's really not the end of the world

this is the only thing thats stoppin me frm going 4 my test!
this is pretty simple to do but 4 some stupid reason i cant get the straightening up bit right!

This is retareded. Why would you ever need to do this in normal driving situations? Looks pretty dangerous.
falcoperegrinus82 2 years ago 11
Haha that's the point i think, yeah it is dangerous, but at end of day you're only doing it to show examiner how good you are at reversing, there's a lot of things you don't do when you pass, like checking your mirrors all the time and putting your handbrake on everytime you stop at junctions etc and i can't remember the last time i used push-pull steering
jonesy2403 2 years ago
After being taught to drive safly why do you think you shoud drive diffrently after passing your test?
Anyway you don't need to put the hanbrake on at a junction for a breif stop, the key thing is NEVER to let the car roll back. If you drop mirror checks what affect are you having on other road users DO YOU KNOW?
Ofcourse its not dangerous if you do it correctly!
parkdrivingschool 2 years ago
if you think too much then it's just harder to drive... that's why womans cant' usually drive because they think it too much
isokessu 2 years ago
that logic is MAN logic.. by defintion it is therefore the best logic and automatically correct.
Woman logic by its definition is over thought and instantly incorrect.

I dont get why I'd ever have to do this manouver during general driving. How does reversing round a corner benefit me?
jazz4 2 years ago
Yeh I was thinking that! I've been driving for 11 years now, and not once have I needed to do this manouevre. And as others have said, it is quite dangerous as well, which makes it all the more ridiculous!
tjf4375 2 years ago 3
I had to the other day infact, I missed a turn, found the next turn of a few yards down the road, reversed into it, then drove off.
roketjack 2 years ago
Yeah when video hits 1m 03seconds... this is when you decide if a signal is necessary and before you move off do a good right shoulder check.. Trust me on this if you don't YOU WILL FAIL...!!!
willward952 3 years ago
he never signal when he reverse... isn't that bad?
marlon369 3 years ago
@marlon369 No, you don't need to.
04smallmj 1 year ago
You forgot to say, before you move off to complete this minouvere, you should decide whether or not a signal is necessary and do a good right shoulder check for motorbikes and other vehicles. You need to re-do this video stating this in my opinion. You cannot just move off after being told to stop in a convenient, safe and legal place. These checks must be made or the learner will X - FAIL - X
willward952 3 years ago
...If you tried doing this in America, you would probably be arrested. And if the cops didn't catch you, the guy behind you would shoot you.

yo americans when did we decide that we were the standards?

I didnt think you could reverse into a junction...
teeohdizzle 3 years ago
A car will go wherever you drive it. :-)
It is a UK driving test thing.
musosmiffy 3 years ago
I think he means he didn't know it was legal.
Is 4-5 car lengths really correct? My instructor said 2. However, I don't think we reverse into a junction (where I live). Maybe in a town you do?
LooieFTW 3 years ago
Ipfvr6, you may actually be asked to do a reverse round the corner on the day of the test. I'll advise you practice & stop being so rude & arrogant. And stop spoiling this for those of us who are really serious about driving.
Thanks to the people who put this video together, it's the most accurate so far, forget the others, this is the best!!!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
why in the fuck would anyone ever ask me to do a reverse around a corner you stupid fuck!

I think you may have just let everyone know who the SF is! Merry Christmas.

heh all this talk about cross roads, last lesson i had, my instructor made me do it on a cross road and said that the added junction is just another thing i should be observing. it was in an industrial area in the morning but did have to stop a lot more because of cars coming out of it. should i tell him don't ask me to do it there? made me panic a lot more than usual.
zeratul1987 3 years ago
crossroads?
greedorulez 3 years ago
Come on me ol' son, get to the point! :-)
Yes I know, see comments below.
If you are a driving instructor, please try and be more productive - jeez I have done this, what have you done?
musosmiffy 3 years ago
My test is on 27th nov, this is the manoevre im dreading!!! Its the only weak spot i have, the rest is a doddle!!!
natasha7869 3 years ago
Bad video, bad advice this manouvre should never be performed at a crossroads as illustrated, no driving examiner would EVEr do this manouvre in such a plac.
JohnAGood 3 years ago
You are correct - not to be done at a crossroads. The rest is 100% correct.
musosmiffy 3 years ago
Hey, this is completely illegal in Australia. Why would you ever have to do it?
