If you visit North Wales, I suggest that you go to the centre of the small village of Trawsfynydd where there is an absolutely wonderful statue of Hedd Wyn which judging from the photographs is completely authentic.
This music and video is a fitting tribute to the great man.
From the looks, that part of Wales ,could be anywhere on the east slope of the Northern Rockies of N.A. My welsh ancestors gravitated to those environs at first because of mining but have now come way beyonfd "the pit". Thank God for Wales and the Welsh - Without them the USA may have never had enough balls to tell Rex Geo III where to fly his Union Jack - Huzzah Cymru - Good Job
we are on we are the celts the pure breed from rheged down the three ravens on the shield, this land is ours we fought we talked we negotiated but this land is still ours sons of rheged rise and claim thy right
God bless Cymru. The most ancient Celtic people of Europe. Protect your culture from the English. As one American, I love you. Damn the 'prince of wales.' 'Wales' is an English word for 'slave.' The word is Cymru! Bless you all.
Wonderful song beautifully executed. My late grandfather worked as a guard on the Blaenau Ffest - Trawsfynydd - Bala railway and helped to carry the "Black Chair" when it arrived on the train at the station from the Birkenhead Eisteddfod to "Yr Ysgwrn" Hedd Wyn's home about a mile away. It remains there to this day with other Eiteddfod chairs which he won from the tender age of 14.
Man im so proud to be welsh every time i hear our songs. Nothing else even comes close to the passion of CYMRU! :) Much love fellow countrymen. (Miss my gy every time i hear our stuff tho, He was an awesome singer and part of the male voice choir. R.I.P Jack twining davies. may his beautiful voice now make every angel fill with warmth. We will NEVER forget you!! <3 Wales ROCKS! :)
The profound bard under foreign soil, - the hands That will never part; The intense eyes behind a dense door, The eyes that cannot open. Tender is the moon tonight - over the peat Of Trawsfynydd climbing; You, sad, and beneath your stone, By a dark trench resting Trawsfynydd! Over its stones - you travelled Across Eryri’s peaks; You trod over her bracken, You sleep far away from her. please correct if wrong my welsh is terrible
davies92k8, the song is called Englynion Coffa Hedd Wyn or i have sometimes seen it called Y Bardd by R williams Parry. WelshBathBoy the words are further down in comments from Iona40, i don't know about a music score sorry.
Hi, where can I get a copy of this version of the song? I remember singing this in school for the Urdd Eisteddfod, we did a piece about war, and a section dedicated to Hedd Wyn, such a beautiful version :)
The words are a lament to Welsh poet Hedd Wyn who won his country's highest poetic honour (y Gadair - a hand carved chair) in the National Eisteddfod 1917. With his difficult strict metre poem 'Yr Arwr' (the hero), the uneducated shepard had beaten all other competitors, mostly university men. The winner's nom de plume was read out and he was asked to rise. After three unanswered calls, the chair was draped in black and it was announced that the great poet was killed in France shortly before.
@ZolotayaKoshka One of the saddest aspects of the story was that Hedd Wyn was a pacifist. He was completely opposed to the war. The British government ordered his family to send one man to fight in France. Hedd Wyn said he would go to prevent his younger brother from going.
As far as we know he was gunned down in a pointless attack on a German trench, much like most of the deaths in that war.
He was a farmer from Trawsfynydd, passionate about poetry. Sent to die for a cause he didn't support.
Thank you for sharing-If it were left to the people of the world to speak to one another and show the beauty of their daily lives and the things that we all have in common, there would be no wars, no lack of care- just love and peace and understanding.
Dwi'n ngharu fy ngwlad a popeth ond dwi ddim yn hoff iawn ar cerddoriaeth fel hyn. Os rydych yn clywed am fand Heavy Metal cymraeg repleiwch. CYMRU AM BYTH. \m/
Love this music. Something peaceful. It's no wonder the welsh are laid back. There's an old welsh proverb. "To be born priveledged is not to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth, but to be born with music in your soul and poetry in your heart."
Yes, I love that saying. My Welsh neighbor (I live in the USA) has a little picture with that saying. I am so proud of my Welsh heritage. Just a correction, it's "To be born Welsh is not to ...".
I love Wales and America. They should become best buds.

it brings tears to my wallet when i had to pay to listen to this especially being a Pakistani when i said to them can you sing Delilah by tom Jones they all run after me funny lot the welsh patriotic only unto there selves yaki da.
Y bardd trwm dan bridd tramor, — y dwylo Na ddidolir rhagor: Y llygaid dwys dan ddwys ddôr, Y llygaid na all agor. Wedi ei fyw y mae dy fywyd, — dy rawd Wedi ei rhedeg hefyd: Daeth awr i fynd i'th weryd, A daeth i ben deithio byd. Tyner yw'r lleuad heno — tros fawnog Trawsfynydd yn dringo: Tithau'n drist a than dy ro Ger y ffos ddu'n gorffwyso. Trawsfynydd tros ei feini — trafaeliaist Ar foelydd Eryri: Troedio wnest ei rhedyn hi, Hunaist ymhell ohoni.
Wonderul harmony as usual. Only ever heard this tune sung to Eli Jenkins prayer. Nice to hear this tune used for a song in Welsh and also the stunning scenery around Moel Siabod.

@ytdsgdjgfueyxn537 I appreciate the sentiment. But in a way you're right about what welsh means. Welsh was the saxon word for stranger.

What a tragic story! You made me cry.
Was the hero of his winning poem a war hero? That would make it even more ironic and sad.
