They have a lot to lose if the theory which they have embraced turns out to be wrong or not as important as they think. Both the New Scientist and The Guardian are getting funding from Shell to write their "environmental" sections.

That is the same Shell corporation that was working with the corrupt East Anglia CRU (Climate Research Unit) to mis-present manipulated data showing exaggerated data.

Shell is set to gain significantly from subsidy of "green carbon technologies" and from the fictitious Carbon Credit Units.

@xLowLightx as a teenager I worked oil rigs to pay for school. We were in the biz of finding oil in the wastelands of the US, capping it, and then hiding all traces that we'd been there. (late 70's)

Carbon tax has nothing to do with running out of oil. This is about keeping the prices artificially inflated & shutting down potential competition. This is why big oil is behind the carbon tax. They've already been assured unlimited carbon credits. No new competition will get in for ANY credits.

It doesn't magically come back, that's true. It does form naturally. Big Oil is for it, because they get a derivatives bubble, and it allows them to get monopolies on new technology.

Government is for it, because Big Oil and other groups are also for it (and fund their campaigns) but also because it expands governmental power and taxation.

It's about control and money, not oil.

I think it's possible for crude oil to run out yes, but I don't think it's happening any time soon. Nor do I think that crude oil is absolutely required, nor something that doesn't replenish itself naturally anyway. Cutting back on oil consumption is likely to be a good thing in the long run, pending actual figures (rather than invented ones) concerning its formation, ease of recycling polymers and other resources derived from oil, and consumption. But for BO and Gov it's still about control.

Governments, Oil companies, and speculators have been claiming that "we'll run out of oil" for some time now. Prices of oil are artificially controlled, rather than regulated by supply/demand.
