Sport fightng won't teach you anything about self defense on the street. How stupid do you have to be to actually think knowing bjj is gonna help you in a street fight. Even if you win on the ground, i'll tell you something. You still might be in a lot of trouble with the law. the last place you wanna be is the ground, and on camera choking a guy out or breaking his arm. you don't wanna be on the camera at all. ufc has to many people brainwashed. buy a good pair of shoes, and know how to push.
BJJ is practical like Krav Maga in the sense it only takes a short amount of time to learn to make use of it. If you decide to practice for 10 years to earn a black belt, dedicating that same amount of time in other arts will make you highly efficient and formidable. It all boils down to what makes you happy, and what events happened in your life that required you to learn that art - crime and rape victim, Military, Law enforcement, you just wanna show off, future action star, whatever.
@sbfbob Are you talking about in a ring or cage? whats your definition of "good" are talking about someone whos a good cage fighter, or street fighter. because those are two completely different animals. its the scariest thing in the world when someone is trying to kill you and your fighting for your life, in those instances the fight is only a few seconds...if your fighting someone longer than that..somethings wrong
Part of Grand Master Helios teaching includes weapon defense. If you train with a real Gracie sanction academy you learn knive/stick/gun defense. GJJ is not a sport is a way of life.
@parrothead305 Thats true, I mean this guy was talking about gettting slammed he acted like he does know how to hook the leg. GJJ imo is more intricate than you're run of the mill bjj school. GJJ forever!!
there is a good amount of stuff that you learn in self defense jiu jitsu that doesn't get incorporated too much if at all at a lot of bjj gyms. Gracie Jiu Jitsu is the original form of modern day Brazilian jiu jitsu which was made for the soul reason of self defense for a smaller guy to be able to defend himself against a bigger and stronger opponent.
My muay thai coach said it best in a street fight you do all the shit thats illegal in a mma fight you dont sit there and think to yourself ok this is a 5 round fight and im going to jab him until he gets tired no you kick to the groin or eye guage etc do all the dirty shit
If they are more than an arms length away? That is what Walther is for. Multiple guys?... You guessed it.. That's what Walther's for. Now It might not always be Walther... sometimes it could be Dan Wesson... result is the same.
In my BJJ class we train both standing up and on the ground techniques. BJJ does work no matter wich position you end up in. If your being attacked by more than 1 person you will have to do what ever it takes to escape. Bite pull hair. pick up a rock or branch. or whatever. If you know some form of self defense its better than nothing at all.
I can tell you first hand that wrestling works just fine if you cut some guy off and he follows you to the parking lot. I am not proud of having been in a fight. But I managed to stop the fight without hurting him too bad (always a plus, especially if the police get involved), and without expending too much energy. I wrestled in high school, dabbled in BJJ, did Judo for a couple of years and am now dabbling in a classical jujutsu style with Daito Ryu roots.
but if you were to get into a bar fight and use your bjj to take the fight to the ground then your not defending yourself your activly trying to fight or win this is no longer self defense it just fighting. without the knowledge of bjj or another grappling style with ground grappling in it you will struggle to escape an attackers hold or pin if they take you to the ground. if there are multiple attackers you going to get grabbed for sure by one of them or more bjj will allow you to escape.
I think people get confused with the whole concept of self defence and fighting in general. self defense is about defending yourself and escaping from a violent situation not starting fights in bars etc. of course bjj can be used in self defense if you get mugged or attacked in a bar theres a good chance that your attacker will grab you or bundle you to the ground bjj will allow you to ESCAPE his grip or hold and enable you to get to your feet. this is self defense.
PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT, " WHAT ABOUT 2 PEOPLE JUMPING ME?"LEARN HOW TO FIGHT ONE PERSON FIRST AND STOP WORRYING ABOUT GETTING JUMPED. ALSO, LEARN HOW TO FIGHT FIRST BEFORE YOU START WORRYING ABOUT SELF-DEFENSE. LEARN TO FIGHT FIRST BEFORE YOU WORRY ABOUT SELFDEFENSE
@daniels37 Krav Maga would tell you otherwise. These days multiple attackers is more common, and people dont look to start fights unless they feel an advantage with their buddies. Krav Maga is all about self defence first before fighting. Tactically, evading is your best option especially for begginers and the Israelis are the best at drilling this. So as a beginner in Krav Maga you learn striking/defending/evading/awareness/weapons AND multiple opponent tactics.
@daniels37 That's terrible logic. People learn to fight to defend themselves. And when defending yourself you should be concerned about other people getting involved. And it's best to learn how to avoid multiple attackers and fights in general.
(3) In any real life confrontation, why the HELL do you want to go to the ground? Like i said in #2, these days you're most likely gonna be attacked by 2+ people, going to the ground takes out your vision, you can't see anyone else coming in, all your attention is on ONE guy, and if you're being beaten on the ground, there's no way of escape, because getting to your feet is a chore on it's own, and good luck if he's larger than you.
The "fact" that 96% of fights go to the ground is a MYTH. (1) Whether they do or do not is upto the fighters. (2) In this day and age, you're most likely going to be attacked by more than one guy, unless you're involved in an organised fight where it's only you and another guy. When multiple attackers are involved, BJJ is nullified, it becomes useless, you stand a better chance being on your feet and moving, either running away or fighting them off while moving away.
the guy on the right fails to realise that stand up styles are also useless against multiple opponents and you are STILL going to get a bottle over the back of your head whether youre standing or not.
the guy does NOT think about what it is he is actually saying.
@skemeB34 Is that right. Then why do i train in two three man attacks in my style regularly as part of the syllabus and i do a Trad/modern style of Ju Jitsu?? The guy on the right...if he could get a word in edge ways was saying that BJJ, MMA and those competition oriented styles aren't good for learning self defense which is exactly what i'm saying. Why can't u admit it...A Novice comes off the street to learn self defense, what would u recommend? Ju Jitsu or BJJ????
@skemeB34 Fair enough. I myself continue my Ju Jitsu training and teaching, because i have great Instructors & students who's motivation is to better their themselves and others not to win medals or cash prizes. Martial artists have to be humble...thats why you won't see my senseis plastered all over youtube claiming this and that. I hear what ur saying, but why would you need to do two styles? Remember the saying; jack of all trades, master of none. anyway, call it a day. Nice dialogue.
Ask yourself this....if you were to get your son or daughter to learn self defense...what would it be? BJJ or Ju Jitsu (bearing in mind that there's a lot of fake ju Jitsu styles out there)....i mean something traditional taught with modern applications with defenses to everything...multiple attackers, grabs, rape attacks, chokes, knives, bottles, coshes, chains, knuckle-dusters swords guns etc... i know what i'd choose for her/him.Not BJJ. Anyway, had enough of this debate, it's getting rude!
No offence but are you really gonna take a guy to the floor on the street? The escenary it's very diffrent from a competion to the street. Let's see if you fight with someone on the street and the guy is not alone. What's you gonna do? or worts is the guy it's a knife fighter and I mean a profesional liked a Kali Fighter. Try to grab this guy with his knife. It's liked try to put your hands inside a blender, please.
@soolsa Even if you take a guy to the ground and you don't know he have a weapon liked a knife and guest what? Now you are in a real knife fighting or worst BOOM!
GRACIE JIU JITSU is 100% street applicable as well as very energy efficient! In the words of the great jiu jitsu masters Rener and Ryron Gracie : training SPORT jiu jitsu techniques is risky because it could cause the practitioner to develop bad muscle memory habits, as well as a false sense of security! Furthermore, the art of Gracie jiu jitsu does also includes weapons defense! Thus, training punch-proof GJJ techniques is much better than SPORT JJ for MMA competition and street self-defense!
if u watch my sport bjj matches... u see me double legs and takeppl down. i think sport bjj is superior to the " grab his nuts here, scratch his eye" martial arts.
cuz I dictate where the fight goes. and if i get hurt boom prepare to be double legged, slamed, and mounted / gnp
if i wanted to defend myslef from anyone i would really hope they did karate, then i would have nothing to worrie about cos karate is hopeless hehe lol
Any martial arts training will give you a better chance at defending yourself than none. Knowing how to controll someone on the ground is huge in a fight or in the dojo. I'd much rather defend myself against a run of the mill prick than someone adept in BJJ.
Rickson gracie mentioned in a seminar that sport jiu jitsu represent only 30% of real jiu jitsu Without the other 70%, which includes stand up self-defense, defensive striking and clinching skills and an efficient vale tudo guard, practitioners cannot develop the confidence to walk the streets knowing that they can survive a possible confrontation
honestly i totally agree with legend and grand master rickson
Everything is dependent on the variables involved. You must be able to guage an in depth understanding of the situation. "situational awareness" is key to any situation.
BJJ is going to work one on one where no weapons are involved. You do not want to be on the floor where others might join in e.g. in a bar where things can get pretty frantic real quick. Ego-fight territory.
BBJ discussion of self-defence can be just as fantasy-based as when non-live martial artists discuss it. I've heard people saying that no-gi is "more realistic" than gi because street fighters don't wear gi's. Of course, we all know they wear un-grippable figure-hugging tee-shirts etc!
I think bjj is good for street self defense but in a real fight you are going to have to go that extra bit and break their arm or choke them out cos theyre not gonna tap and accept what just happened to them.
if a self defense enviroment though i think a striking style would prevail best though like boxing / muay thai and then if the guy shoots on you then you can use your bjj
I agree that there is a lot of cross over between the three disciplines - the skill is to know which one to use in a situation. At my club (ISOHEALTH - Adelaide, Australia) we train the self defense aspects of BJJ first, and our first 2 stripes reflect that with guys being able to defend knife and bat attacks, as well as clinching and getting up off the ground safely.
As I said, there is a symbiosis - and for me, by maintain that balance, BJJ is the best art for health, self defense & fun.
