keeping a practice journal really helps. A large gap in my playing which I continuously work on is ear training. This means singing as well, even if we rely on our instruments for our 'voice'. Listening to everything we play with the utmost concentration is also key, even those seemingly mindless exercises. Don't erase the noodling though, it's key to developing melodic maturity and getting out of those comfortable licks that entrap you.
