I dont have a radiator at home I have a furnace. (My flat is kind of old) So I have to make fire every day. One should think that it's a routine to me. But I can't help but get fascinated every time, how fast this element seems to get hold of everything. Very mighty. Then I think how poweful a person must be to actually be able to controll this force. Good choice. But I stick with air. Explanation below. (Response to koolio21able)

Yeah, you're probably right. But I just like the philosophy of the air benders. You know. Letting go of all earthly things and living free of the bondages and desires of the world/earth. Living spirtually and ....well... free.
PLUS this element surrounds everything. No need to look for air to bend. As a bonus you get to fly.... well... to soar. But you know what I mean.
Basically I like the idea of airbenders being friendly, living in peace with themselves and everybody else.
@eagleguy19 he was poisoned by the toxic gasses from the volcano. Fang is his familiar (he appears in the Spirit World as well) simply cradled his dying body and died himself.
How are they going to make a new avatar? I mean if Aang is dead then no air benders are left... So who teaches air bending to the new avatar? unless.... Aang's and Katara's son/daughter is an air bender! What if their child was the new bad guy though... twists and turns... oh well guess I'll have to wait and see. Oh and there better be dragons in the new one... I wanted to see more dragons after that one episode where they meet the last 2.
@idevidedbyzero according to the info on the sequel ,Aang and Katara have at least one son called Tenzin who the next Avatar needs to search for to learn Airbending. More importantly, it seems that the Sky Bisons are back in numbers 70 years later, so the original source of Airbending is alive and well- there are group shots of Sky Bison in the trailer for The Legend of Korra.

@koolio21able They were probably dormant when all of those houses were built, and woke up that one night. You gotta remember that something like 20+ years passed between Roku's confrontation with Sozin and the eruptions happening.
Well, he could have easily escape the island, despite being asleep when the eruption started, so he wasn't in much danger. He would have had more than enough time to escape had that been his wish. He even manage to to do a decent job at holding back the lava on his own. And maybe they thought the volcano was dormant.

@MrRogueUnit had Sozin saved Roku from the poisonous gasses they would have tamed the volcano. Roku was a powerful Avatar and would have suceeded if not for the gas.

So far, all avatars up to Aang lived in their own nation and their own element (though Yangchen is never shown in a Nomad temple).

If my was home, not my house, not my room, but my home (which can be anything I can consider home) was in need or trouble, I'd try my hardest to protect.
@Owlsbreath The Avatar is reborn as a baby, who must grow and master all the elements once again, which could take up to a lifetime. There was danger, Roku knew that Sozin had plans to conquer other nations, he knew of that Sozin would attack if he didn't oppose him. How do you expect to fight against natural disasters like a volcanic eruption to save your home, it's suicide and nobody does it, I understand protecting your home from people but not natural disasters that can't be stopped.
The waterbending that you see Roku use on his master here is probably the most powerful that you see in the entire series. My first time watvhing that episode I was like HOLY SH*T.

Its scheduled to be a 14 episode mini series but hopefully if the ratings are high enough nickolodean will expand their order to not only more episodes but more seasons.

@jaspertheking4life The first avatar is not stronger than his/her later incarnations. The avatar is a culmination of spirits. Each becomeing stronger than the last, they add the knowledge they have gained in life to their successor. In this sense each avatar is stronger than the last meaning that avatar Kioshi is better than the origional. BUT thats not to say that the origional avatar is not better than the people he watched over.

@harrypotter799 Lava is very different from fire, dude. If he was going to use water to cool the island, he'd end up sinking it in the process. Not to mention that it would take way too much time and energy to pull something like that off anyway.

And plus he spent all the extra time and energy trying to drain the volcano of the lava (which was dumb becuase there's still like idk an entire sea of lava right below him but anyways). I'm just saying, He coulda either waterbended directly into the volcano itself, OR he coulda waterbended on the oncoming lava, OR he coulda just ran away!!!

I guess he was hoping that the eruption would eventually calm while the lava just flowed (semi) harmlessly into the ocean. And as for waterbending directly into the volcano, I guess that would probably cool outer surface but then there would be more lava building up below. plus you have to take old age into account.
@Reaper00140 Avatar Kioshi lived to be over 200 years old and to her last dying breathe she was a fighter. Roku was only at least 82 (sozin was 82 when he started the war and since they share the same birthday i figured the age). And even with his "old age" he fights a volcano. But if you WERE to take his old age into account, why would he stay? Why not just leave the island and find a new home. No one ever said he NEEDED to live there.
I don't know if anyone else picked this up, but I love how the story of Roku and Sozin is kind of like the opposite of Aang and Zuko. Roku and Sozin were friends, then enemies, but with Aang and Zuko, it's the other way around. It's also cool how both relationships are Avatar and Firelord.
What are Avatar Roku and Fire Lord Sozen Arguing about? ;s Why is Fire Lord Sozen attack hate Avatar Roku and Why he simply claims war against all the 4 nations. And how does the Air benders vanished?
@anash258 He attacks the 4 nations because he wants to unite them all into one nation with him at the head and he is mad at roku because he proposed the idea to him and roku rejected it. The airbenders vanished because Sozin used the comet to wipe them out hoping to stop the coming of the avatar.
It's weird how avatar roku and fire lord Sozin were friends. And then it turns out Zuko is related to Avatar Roku. because avatar roku is Zuko's mom's grandfather. Zuko was shocked when he found out all of this in Book 3 Episode #6

Roku should have just ditched the island.... honestly, there was nobody left on the island, he was basically fighting it for no reason. He needlessly died fighting the damn volcano, he could have prevented the war from ever starting.

@Owlsbreath Yea...When a tornado comes near my house I'm going to run outside with a bat and start swinging at it...No, Roku is the Avatar, he's meant to keep balance in the world. Not to fight natural disasters that are going to harm nobody. Roku's life was way too important to be thrown away fighting a volcano erupting on an uninhabited island to simply protect his home... If your ship is sinking, would you stay on it to perish or would you abandon ship to live another day?

@zDallasCowboys008z the beauty about being the avatar is that the Earth Spirit incarnate can always be reincarnated and during this time, nothing YET has started. A ship isn't my home though. If my was home, not my house, not my room, but my home (which can be anything I can consider home) was in need or trouble, I'd try my hardest to protect.

@Owlsbreath The Avatar is reborn as a baby, who must grow and master all the elements once again, which could take up to a lifetime. There was danger, Roku knew that Sozin had plans to conquer other nations, he knew of that Sozin would attack if he didn't oppose him. How do you expect to fight against natural disasters like a volcanic eruption to save your home, it's suicide and nobody does it, I understand protecting your home from people but not natural disasters that can't be stopped.

@mileyawesome770 You do of course realize that one was announced quite some time ago? The legend of korra should be premiering sometime next year. Its scheduled to be a 14 episode mini series but hopefully if the ratings are high enough nickolodean will expand their order to not only more episodes but more seasons.

@jaspertheking4life The first avatar is not stronger than his/her later incarnations. The avatar is a culmination of spirits. Each becomeing stronger than the last, they add the knowledge they have gained in life to their successor. In this sense each avatar is stronger than the last meaning that avatar Kioshi is better than the origional. BUT thats not to say that the origional avatar is not better than the people he watched over.

@harrypotter799 but the first benders used to bend not the elements, but the energy within a individual, but the knowlege went forgotten as the others found the same energy within the 4 elements, but yes, you are right about the culmination of spirits, it is the only reason why a boy without any kind of expierience faced firelord Ozai and won during Sozins comet.

@jaspertheking4life "In the era BEFORE the Avatar, we bended not the elements, but the energy within ourselves..." there was no avatar when people simply energy bended. And aang was just a "special case" He was at his strongest, he was empowered by sozins comet since he too is a firebender, he'd been earth and waterbending for a while, he was inexperienced with fire but that didn't matter (comet), and on top of it all he was in the avatar state.

@harrypotter799 Lava is very different from fire, dude. If he was going to use water to cool the island, he'd end up sinking it in the process. Not to mention that it would take way too much time and energy to pull something like that off anyway.

@Reaper00140 I'd rather sink the island and be forced to move, as opposed to dying fromfighting a losing battle. And plus he spent all the extra time and energy trying to drain the volcano of the lava (which was dumb becuase there's still like idk an entire sea of lava right below him but anyways). I'm just saying, He coulda either waterbended directly into the volcano itself, OR he coulda waterbended on the oncoming lava, OR he coulda just ran away!!!

@harrypotter799 He wasn't really draining the volcano so much as he was just trying to redirect it. I guess he was hoping that the eruption would eventually calm while the lava just flowed (semi) harmlessly into the ocean. And as for waterbending directly into the volcano, I guess that would probably cool outer surface but then there would be more lava building up below. plus you have to take old age into account.

@Reaper00140 Avatar Kioshi lived to be over 200 years old and to her last dying breathe she was a fighter. Roku was only at least 82 (sozin was 82 when he started the war and since they share the same birthday i figured the age). And even with his "old age" he fights a volcano. But if you WERE to take his old age into account, why would he stay? Why not just leave the island and find a new home. No one ever said he NEEDED to live there.

I don't know if anyone else picked this up, but I love how the story of Roku and Sozin is kind of like the opposite of Aang and Zuko. Roku and Sozin were friends, then enemies, but with Aang and Zuko, it's the other way around. It's also cool how both relationships are Avatar and Firelord.

@anash258 He attacks the 4 nations because he wants to unite them all into one nation with him at the head and he is mad at roku because he proposed the idea to him and roku rejected it. The airbenders vanished because Sozin used the comet to wipe them out hoping to stop the coming of the avatar.
