The robots inside have been clocked at over 120 mph. They use a carbon fiber setup instead of the old Timberline aluminum arms but still uses the Timberline motors.
The DC I used to work at used the Powderhorn in conjunction with the IBM virtual tape system because of their emulation properties. Later on, the STK silos were dropped in favor of the complete IBM virtual tape system.
But STK's equipment is far more reliable in our experiences.
Sometimes this storagetek silos have problem and most of
the problems are due to users don't know what they are doing.
I ran into problem once it run out of scr tapes and dam it there are no reserve scr tapes found. I just told center. We ran out of reserve scr tapes. I believe some jobs are canceled and pending.
We officially decommissioned our silos, and our SL8500 is in production mode tonight. We had 2 employee females add tapes since we guys are fatter to fit inside lol.
They become a lot cooler once you hook two or more together, they can pass tapes between silos through nifty revolving doors.
A Sun Storagetek technician told me they introduced this thing in 1994 and it still gets the job done today. I laughed when i saw the inside of the control unit, it's basically a 386 PC in a big box!
Sadly we have to replace the powderhorn next year since they'll stop making spare parts for them. Not that it ever breaks, of course!
We decommissioned one of them. Now have 5. Heard at the datacenter where my dad works, ordered a nice Sun SL8500. But was cannot install it yet, because we need to retrofit ir for earthquakes? Don't know.
It's still the most advanced- and most expensive- tape silo in the world.

Amazing pieces of technology.
I remember when you could barely get tech to get off his ass to change a tape! This thing doesn't even stop for a coffee and a smoke lol.
