I want to use a geologic map created by the USGS, and use the standardized symbology that I downloaded. There are many many many rock types, colors, and patterns. How can I automatically have the symbology match up and display just as it looks on the PDF version of the geologic map that you can download (you can download a pdf version or a geodatabase version or both).
@Thryn1 as far as i know, all information about the symbology is stored in the mxd-file when you save your project. at the moment i am not sure whether it is possible to save it directly to the shape file!
Thank you for this tutorial! Very helpful!

How do you insure that the symbology you've created for each unit_name category is maintained when you re-open the shape file?
