This is a beautiful piece of art. I'm a white boy from a rural housing project and I would be one sad ass if it wersn't for the likes of Sam Cooke and sooo many other black artists. Shame on those that were taught to hate out of ignorance! Thanks and God Bless!
@ilovepeoplesamcooke He died in a domestic dispute and people looked down on him for having an affair. He was one smooth dude and some were jealous! :(
@billeybop Yes I know it! Now like Iike I said I love people, but some people get so jealous of someone else that they end up actually hurting the person. Or getting killed like Sam Cooke. And that makes me mad and upset at the same time. Why do people have to be like that? ( I often ask myself that question) I love Sam Cooke! We need him and all those good singers from the 50"s and 60"s singing for us here today!! Music isn't music anymore :( God bless! :)
@billeybop sam was the MAN, but read the biography about him.
he didn't die in a 'domestic dispute'. he was killed by the hotel manager that was part of a scam to 'roll' their prostitutes clients.
same cooke didn't like banks, and would have money wired to him when he was in california. he used to show fat wads of cash. a eurasian (amerasian?) woman and her pimp saw that. he had an affair with her over a period of months.
@billeybop (cont): one night, she 'rolled' him (took his wallet/money and threw his clothes out the window to discourage him chasing her).
he wasn't discouraged. he likely was beating the hell outta her to get his money back, and the manager came up behind him and beat him near to death with a bat (the manager was an old lady). when he was down, she shot him.
this isn't hate...he's a chicago boy. he would have created a chicago version of motown, with curtis mayfield, bigger than motown.
@liamjenright That's Dick Clark & the show is American Bandstand, that was on '52-'53 until Clark died in 1989. Please look it up in Wikipedia, which explains all about it better than I ever could altho it was one of my favorite TV shows when I was a teenager!
@TheDaywalker1701 Alright, I thought it looked like Dick Clark, but I wasn't sure. He's still alive though, dude, he still does New Year's Rockin' Eve every year.
This has always been my favorite song! I just love the way Sam's voice soars---and that "whoa-whoa" he does. It just blows me away. Nobody can ever sing like that again. The man had a real gift and he gave that gift to all of us, through the ages.
Friends of all colors......... each one of us who has an appreciation for music and artists who give us inspiration through their style should listen to this man's work.....almost a half century since he left us, there is a major void in pop music that only someone like Sam could fill..... I am 61 years old and have been witness to music from the 50's through today....I don't believe that there is an indiviual who has influenced a genre of music(soul) as well as he did....
Spot on! I was about to say the same thing, what I cant understand is how such a hansom, talented guy was killed in a crazy twist of events involving a prostitute??? it just dosen't add up??
This is so beautiful and music just isn't the same but seeing that all white crowd he's singing for just makes me sad. A terrible time for Black people.
@bolder2009 where did you get your info I'm very interested I heard similar things about other famous black people who showed they were threats...but I never find info proving the info to be true. Why would the mob attack a singer?
why do people always have to focus on the dislikes. Everyone is never going to agree on anything, ever, no matter how sensible. So just chill, don't worry about what other people like and let's all enjoy the song because that's why we're here
I'm 61, & grew up listening to this and others who died far too young. This became my Mom's song for my Dad: she said it perfectly expressed how she felt about him. When he died in 1976, they had been married for 47 & together for 50.. She was Hungarian, He was Black - mixed marriages weren't done in their time. They fought everything and everybody to stay together. I grew up in the midst of this great love affair, witnessing the hate people heaped upon them; it only made their love stronger.
@TheDaywalker1701 These are real heroes. People which had to pave the way for tolerance and understanding that we let our eyes do alot of our thinking. Its so great that they were able to transmutate the negative energy that was trasnmitted to positive energy. I am from Puerto Rico my father is black and my mother is white. Globally Puertorrican but people didnt see it that way they just saw a Black man and a White woman. Our parents shared love like no other ....REAL LOVE!!!
@TheDaywalker1701 its not fair being racist as my best friend is mixed race and i love this song as old the oldies have so many meanings and alot of feeling in them and im only 25 lol
@TheDaywalker1701 That is a beautiful story about your parents!! Some people and in fact some of my own family, have a problem with mixed marriages. I have NO problem with it! If you love the person of a different race than you and he/she loves you too, then why the heck just not get married because you are different races?? I will be turning 16 years of age. I ave a few years to go before I get married but I don't care what race. As long as I truly love him and he truly loves me!!Thnx for post
it is a shame and a blemish on the history of america ! However please say thank God for the creation of the country called America as we may have had to struggle but we have always been on the path to equality !
And keep in mind that path was not an open easy one sure it took casualties but we are here and free to do and love who we wish ! and in the process we have inherited great music and integrity from it all !!
@TheDaywalker1701 I gotcha by a couple yrs, Im 66. Inspiring story about your folks. Bless them. Unfortunately, hate is alive and well today. Too bad! however, Cooke was superb!
I was born in 1970 but my Dad played these songs over and over and over again, so reminds me of my Daddy, God rest his soul. And, my oh my the beautiful contenance of the man of these times, Sam Cooke so very handsome. Men of those days had such a clean, neat look about them, they just don't come like it anymore, and they were tall!
The '50s were difficult for a lot of people. It was such a conform at all costs time.Glad they're over. The music was great though. This song is a memory of those times. It brings me back there.
@castalia60able There were good things as well.Families were closer, friends were true friends & those in places of power weren't completely consumed by greed. One thing we had was the popular music of the day.Not only was it well done,it was fun too!Sam Cooke had such a smooth voice & great style.Love to listen to him all these years later.
@ashburnhouse seriously, WHY are you so angry?? Aside from the video being out of sync I couldnt help but marvel at the multicultural crowd. I wondered what kind of special treatment from the organizers Sam received while he was there. I hope he at least got to sit in the MIDDLE of the bus on the way there...

No wonder them woods jerked Sam....seductive ass kneega. Do you know how much white pussy he was getting? Notice the difference between the dudes and gals faces? Women fantisizing about being mounted and drenched down by this "boy" and the dude looking like they want to drag him from the back of an F350 !
@thebabycakes71 Way to propagate racism while bashing it. Yeah, the 1950s were pretty messed up, and we've got a long way to go towards true equality, but calling white people 'woods' and bringing back the hate just makes _you_ look like a racist. Racism directed at white people is still just that, racism.
This is a great song; why can't it just be that? Everybody knows things were even more messed up then than now, but you don't have to use racial epithets to make your point.
@septoner I find it interesting that white people who acknowledge racism, turn the word racism around without understanding and acknowledging its true definition that Racism implies a power dynamic that black people do not have. There for Black people do not have the power to be racist, prejudice yes but racist no. until Black people have the power "white" people have they can not be racist, racism implies a power dynamic that black people do not have.
Septoner, hello, I do believe a black person is president of the USA; could you repeat again what you just said about black people not having the power that white people have?
The official account of what happened to Sam is garbage. It doesn't add up. Go ask Etta James who saw Sam's corpse what she believes happened to Sam. The injuries she saw do not match up with the account that was given. He was set up and murdered. Someone did a number on Sam, we can all speculate on the reasons why. Keep in mind that the mob was literally controlling the music industry in those days and Sam owned his own lable and publishing. 2 and 2 makes four but what do I know.
Sam was our black Prince he was the Michael and Luther of his day. The first balck man to own his on label and cross over to white audiences on a massive scale. Not only was he handsome, he was the best tenor ever. We will never see the likes of such a rare gem. As always they find a way to destroy our royalty. He was set up and murdered by the mob that story about him being in a hote with a 2 bit Asian Whore was nothing more than a cover up. He was second only to Elvis at RCA. RIP Sam
lol! at people who claim Sam Cooke looks like Columbus short or er.. Larenz Tate. are you guys serious ? so all black people look like one another. Next you are going to tell us Shamur Moore should play him huh ? Yaw need to go to spec savers subito !
bet snoop dog nelly 50 cent ja rule and the rest wish to god almighty they could sing a song like that, but sad them fuckers cant sing anything nothin nada gag on all u fuckin rappers and rap lovers
@yeshuahfullofit Really? I did not know the full story--just I what I remember hearing from my Sam Cooke-loving mother years back. That IS a shame. Poor Sam and his music still plays in my mind and in my heart for that matter. I just love him! R.I.P. indeed forevermore, dear Sam! You have and always will be missed by we, your fans!
if anyone here has ever heard him sing 'if i had a hammer', you know it's MASTERFUL.
he made a small mistake, and played it off so well, you'd think it SHOULD have been part of the song. LOL

My god this IS music. Sam Cooke had such a gift.
Talent is a word that could not describe this guy's voice.
Such a fuckin shame what they did to him.
He was one of the greatest of ALL TIME!
He, and many of the other music legends need MORE recognition nowadays.
Music today is such..garbage, compared to this..this is passion, this is SOUL!

gosh he was handsome

RIP Sam

Wonder what Sam Cooke would think about millions of people watching a video of this simple love song a half a century later.

Listening to this reminds me of what REAL vocalists sound like. There's not a fake thing in his voice.
