the song was written by Capt. Lou Shebango, hero of Bosnia, who also wrote "Hard Break Hotel" and many oder huits. Capt. Lou used to say, "Give me a few minutes and a few papers and I can make a hit songs."
good riddence to the worst decade of my life,if id only known back when i was 17 and was sick of listening to this would i realize how much i appreciate hearing today
See the 1997 version, and watch a few more versions after this if you really do love them.
15 years ago Barry was sometimes unable to move due to back surgery, heart attack as well.(The gloves he dons are for the arthritis)
This version sounds better than the 89 version and the 97 version sounds better than this so, his voice never went at all, never even started "going", ask a few music producers, his 2006 version of You Should Be Dancing was brilliant for example, 15, yes, 15 years after this.
You're right! Barry is roughly about the same, he may have lost some "texture" but he sounds fantastic! I think what most people foget is Robin leaves Barry hanging on the "falsetto" harmony. Robin sings in a much lower octave, however on the original recording and early live performances Robin lends his own falsetto which is much higher than Barry's. So the "flatness" could be the lack of Robin's falsetto. Just listen to the "Spirits tour" version, and you'll see what I mean.
In this performance, Robin uses a very different voice than the one he uses in the 1997 performances, like in Monaco, when the 'we can try' kicks in, he uses a slightly higher voice, but he still provides that little low base for the harmony, which is good.:)

i love them but I can hear his voice is "going" with age....listen to the 1989 live version of this, it is far better. His "tone" is getting like a cartoon character almost a "quacking" and he is singing flat. It could possibly be just a bad night for them. You can't fight old age off forever..... He should be singing this song one musical half step lower, that might help alot
Watch an interview with him, his voice is actually regular. I have no idea how he gets his singing voice so high, and I respect him for it...it takes a lot of skill to do that.
The funky 70s + awesome movie set in NYC + groovin' band + John Travolta = badass disco tune

But thats the one with a heavily pre recorded instrumental arrangement, the 1997 version is the one without that.;)

I remember this concert airing many years back and being amazed how tight they still sounded.
They had gotten to the point where they were finally shedding the long running stigma and backlash of their 70's disco fame.
A truly talented group of singer-song writer-musicians worthy of all the fame and respect they have attained thus far.
Thanks for posting this concert vid.
